Title: John Ogle and Rosanna Hughes
Post by: rdarby on Saturday 31 October 09 03:24 GMT (UK)
My ancestor John Ogle was transported to Australia in 1840 for stealing 4 "flitches" of bacon. His wife went to work as a house servant and the children were put a workhouse (Alnwick Union Workhouse) I found them in the 1841 census.
In 1850 Rosannnah brought the family out to Australia (Hobart) and I have a copy of a letter she wrote to the Colonial Secretary complaining about the treatment the children received!
After John received his Conditional Pardon, they went to Port Fairy, Victoria (it was known as "Belfast" in those days)
I have yet to start searching for John's trial records etc. I was wondering if anyone else had an interest in Ogles from Northumberland and suspect it is not an uncommon name in this area?

Yep, that's his convict sheet from VanDiemen's Land.
Thanks for the info on Woodhorn, I'll get in touch with them for sure.
Are there any further records from the Alnwick Union workhouse? Where would they be kept?
And if anyone looking thinks they may have a connection to John...

Hi Roger, if you go to the workhouses site at:

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/

and put Alnwick in the search box there is info there and maps/plans. it also lists which records are held at Woodhorn.

Hi Roger,
Just to say that the name Ogle is unusual and not too many about.
Going to send you a PM, not too helpful, but may be in future!

My Grandmother on my mother's side was called Isabella Johnson Ogle and lived in Seaton Delaval and New Hartley.  I have traced the line back to Matthew Ogle born about 1806 to his death in about 1843. Occupation was a "mason" In 1841 together with his wife Elizabeth they were living in Hutchinson Buildings in Tynemouth.  Matthew was born in Northumberland according to the census.  He actually died in London and we suspect he went looking for work in the capitol. Have not had time to look into this further.
There is of course a place in Northumberland called Ogle - There was once a castle there.
Who knows whether there is a link with your family but yes Ogle is an unusual name

I have recently discovered that John had 3 siblings, George,Joseph and Martha, but haven't seen the name Matthew anywhere. Maybe cousins..?

I haven't come across the name Mary yet, but the time and place fit in with my tree. Do you have the name of Mary's parents?

Hi rdarby.

I haven't really followed them up.
Robert Purdy was my direct Purdy G/Grandfathers Brother.
(Yes, I know it doesnt seem many Generations but James Purdy was born 1828 and his daughter was born 1878 in New Zealand and my Mother 1912)
From the names of their children I would think her Father is William as there is no Williams in the Purdy direct Tree.
Their Children;
Robert Purdy 1848
William Ogle Purdy, 1850
Phoebe Ogle Purdy 1853
Unfortunately Mary only has Northumberland as her POB on all the Census I have found.

Trish :)

Hi David,
As we cannot discuss possibly living people on here have you gone back further with your Mothers Tree?

Thanks Trish,
Mum's father was Henry Ogle b. 1879, his father was Robert Wilson Ogle, his father was Robert Wilson, his mother was Elizabeth Ogle although they never married. Elizabeth Ogle's mother was Elizabeth Ogle also unmarried, Elizabeth Ogle's father was George Ogle husband of Ann.
I can't get any further back than these.

Hi David, I also have a George Ogle in my tree, but his wife was Sarah Forrest as far as I can see. I guess there are so many branches in a tree, there may be  a connection somewhere further back.( the name George was also used again later;my grgrgrandmother Jane Ogle had a brother George who died as a young man soon after arriving in Australia in the 1850's)
