Patrick Curran, a Catholic, married Catherine Stevenson, a Presbyterian, at All Saints Newton in 1858. Both kept their religions and their sons were raised in the faith of their father, and the daughters in the faith of their mother.
They had 7 children born alive, by 1911 6 were still living. They were all born in Ramelton as far as I can tell, but not too sure about the birthplace of the 2 eldest, Joseph and Catherine Ellen, they may have been born in All Saints parish.
Patrick's father was Charles Curran, Catherine's father was Joseph Stevenson.
Charles died at Roughan, Ramelton 1917 and is buried in Tully graveyard.
Catherine died at Clooney, Ramelton 1914 and is buried with her Stevenson ancestors in the old Presbyterian/Church of Ireland graveyard in Church Street, Ramelton.
Can anyone link to these families? The Stevensons have links to Buchanan and Ferguson in Ramelton.
One of Patrick and Catherine's daughters married James Black, Church of Ireland faith, they had a son, James born about 1896.

Hello
I'm replying to an old post. Are you still involved in this research? Do you have a marriage certificate for James Black and the Curran daughter? I'm also researching James Black Donegal and was wonder if my ancestor was the James Black aged 3 in the 1901 census living with Patrick and Catherine in Donegal.

A Margaret (a.k.a. Maggie) Curran, daughter of Patrick, got married to James Black (an attendant at the District Asylum) in 1895, their address at time of marriage was the townland of Conwal (Letterkenny), they had a son James on 31 May 1897.

Hello,
Yes, I am still interested in the Black connection, although all I can I tell you is that after Margaret Curran's early death, her husband re-married and lived in Londonderry. I think he is there in the 1911 census with new wife, son James and further children.
Margaret and James married 12 Dec 1895 3rd Presbyterian Church, Letterkenny. She must have died around the time of her son's birth but I don't know exactly when.
Her eldest sister visited from Canada in 1923 and gave her address in Ireland as c/o her brother-in-law James Black, 1 Northland Avenue, Derry.

I've just been checking my original post and it should read
Patrick died at the Roughan, Ramelton in 1917. Not Charles.
-
Many thanks Lodger. If James his son was with his father in the 1911 census it's not likely he was my relative as I'm 90% sure mine was living in tyrone at the time.
Kind regards

Here's the link for the 1911 census

I'm sure it's the same family as the father has 4 children but the mother only has 3 children born.
So James must be her stepson.
And, of course, when my great-grandfather's sister arrived from Canada she gave this address as her place of residence during her visit.

Thank you :)

Hi
I wonder if Catherine is a sister to my great great grandmother Rachel Davis - nee Stevenson. #gaffy you found a William Stevenson from Clooney who was present at George Davis death in 1888. I'm wondering if he was also a relation.
Rachel was born circa 1839 and died Dec 1814, at the High Cairn (near Clooney) Her daughter married a Buchanan, and they lived at The High Cairn - outside Ramelton.
-
Hi again
Just dug around a little - there was a Joseph Stevenson, as father of the groom - William Stevenson, at Tullyfern...1865.
-
I didn't know about Rachel but I did know there was some connection between the Stevensons and the Buchanans of High Carn (or Cairn).
My gt-gt-grandmother was Catherine Stevenson, born about 1830. Her known siblings were Eleanor born about 1828. Gerald (or Jarred) born about 1840. William born about 1843 and James born about 1849. So there is room for a few more in between.
They were the children of Joseph Stevenson, haven't been able to find the mother's name as yet.
Here is a picture of William Stevenson, born about 1843, died 1929, married Jane Peoples 14th December 1865 at Milford.

Ah - the mystery continues!
Great Photo - thank you!

Welcome to RootsChat, Rocky111 :)
Just adding a slight correction-
Patrick died at the Roughan, Ramelton in 1917. Not Charles
Patrick died at Clooney on 15 April 1917. Charles Curran, his son who was the informant, lived at Roughan.

Catherine died at Clooney, Ramelton 1914…
Catherine Curran died on 14 May 1914 aged 71 yrs at Clooney. Like her husband Patrick, the informant was her son Charles, who was also living at Clooney.

Hi Rocky111,
I hope we can make a connection, I know of a Curran relation who lives at the Roughan, big house on the right at the top of the hill. He has a brother who I met about 2 years ago, he farms on the other side of the town (last house before the bridge was his directions!)
I plan another trip to the Ramelton/Letterkenny area in June to attend a wedding, so perhaps we could meet up? I have a good deal more information on the Curran and Stevenson families than I admit to on the Board, it seems to have more than its share of know-it-all's!
I was in Conway's in August this year, a good pint of stout and the Blue Goat is a great shop.

Rocky111, if you can make another couple of posts it will allow you to use the Private Message system, I can then send you my email address.

I think that is my uncle who lives in the big house the man you need to chat to is Charlie who farms and lives close by he has a wealth of knowledge and can go back about 3 or 4 generations as one he wanight he informed me that fergusons from the high carin were also related and hynes from ramelton were also related to the currans
-
Thanks for getting back to me, yes it was Charlie I spoke to a couple of years ago, he said that the next time I came he would take me to High Carn and show me where the Stevenson's farmed.
Patsy Hynes who lived in Clydebank, near Glasgow, was Charlie & Peter's cousin, he was the rich one of the family! The Ferguson's were connected through Annie Stevenson, they didn't move from Ramelton, unlike most of her siblings, they lived at Clooney and are buried in the old churchyard with the ruined church, right in the middle of the town.

Rocky, Your grandfather James Curran, (married to Margaret Doherty) would have been the son of Charles Curran and Ellen Doherty. Charles was the younger brother of my great-grandfather, Joseph curran who died here in Scotland in 1935.
This makes us 2nd cousins!
Here is a picture of Charles & Ellen with some of their children, I think your grandfather will be in the group. As far as I know it was taken at the Roughan.
-
Rocky, this is my great-granda Joseph Curran in the centre of the picture, it was taken in 1917 in Motherwell. The young man on the left of the picture is Joe's youngest son, Charles and the other soldier on the right is John (Jack) McDaid, the son of Joe's eldest sister Kate, she was married to John McDade in Ramelton in 1884, they had 3 children born there before moving to Motherwell, where they had 3 more (including Jack). They then moved to Ontario and Joe's son Charles went out there with them. The 2 boys joined the Canadian army and were killed within a month of each other almost at the end of the war. I have visited both their graves in France.
If you look closely you can see Joe's "handlebar" moustache. The 2 girls in the picture were Joe's granddaughters.

Rocky, this is my granda, James Curran born 1893 at Dumbarton and, on the left is his older brother Pat, born at Clooney in 1884.
