There's a Thomas Reed b 1841 at 13 Heywoods Terr.,Crumpsall RG12 3265 Folio 112 p 23  Labourer at the home of Henry and Mary Rhodes.   Couldn't find an Ellen Reed b.1857.  The only Margaret I got was a Margaret G.Reed b 1879 - shown as a Daughter - in home of Hannah Reed (Widow b 1846 in Salford) in Gortley, Lancs., with several other sons and daughters...  The latter doesn't sound very useful but might lead to a connection.

Any help?

Thanks for that.  Does it say where this Thomas was born. The Thomas I am looking for was born in Manchester. Does it say if he is married or widowed or single etc. Many thanks

The Thomas Reed I found was shown as Married and born in Manchester.      I'll check all the other Thomas Reeds on the Census later and if any of them are born 1841 and Manchester but were elsewhere at the time of the Census, I'll get back to you.    If you don't hear back from me, he'll be the only one.    I'd also looked for Nell Reed b.1857 without success (my grandmother was a Sarah Ellen but known as Nell)!

May be a wild goose chase but on 1891 Census there's a Thomas Read b 1841 Cook birthplace Not known with wife Mary b 1851 Fleetwood, Lancs., and son Robert b 1876 Fleetwood all residing 273 City Road, Hulme, Manchester RG12 3194 folio 94 p.22.     There are several Margarets b 1879 elsewhere - including one shown as Sister (scholar) to head of house Robert Reid (single) age 23 b.Glasgow with several other 'brothers and sisters'.    Maybe it's stretching things too far but Margaret could have been away from parents' home and the 'Mary' above could have taken that name if she didn't like Ellen; Mary Ellen was quite popular then I think.  Hope I haven't put you off track.

Thanks for all your help.

The Thomas Reed and Ellen Gakell were married in Prestwich Dec 1/4 1877 and on the 1881 they are living in Crumpsall 12 Johnson Sq with a daughter Margaret Ellen who was born Dec 1/4 1879. Thomas shows as born in Manchester on this so I think your first one born Manchester and married is the most likely one. I have not found a suitable death for Ellen or Margaret. Thomas died in Prestwich in 1893.  I'll keep looking for Ellen and Margaret and I would imagine there would be other children too. They were obviously not together on census night.

Would you mind posting the actual census listing for him and the others with him in 1891. Many thanks

HI Heywood, yes, would you mind posting the actual census record with the other people in the house and address.

Margaret is Margaret Ellen Reed and she was born Cheetham Hill with her birth registered Dec 1/4 1879 Prestwich district, so this could well be her. It may help me find her mother Ellen too. Ellen was born in Upholland. As her husband died in 1893 I am also looking in to possible remarriages for her.

Many thanks

The only other possibility I can see is a marriage in Chorlton 1901- Margaret Ellen Reed to Thomas H Park.
1911 has a Margaret Ellen Park aged 31 yrs living Chorlton but I can't see a Thomas Park in the indexes to match.

Thanks, I have found that marriage too and in 1911 I think Thomas Henry Park is down as Harry Park with Margaret Ellen and a few children. I am looking in to this further.  Margaret Ellen is on the 1881 as born Cheetham Hill 1879 and as this Margaret Ellen is born Manchester I also need to check out where Cheetham Hill is.

I am still trying to find Ellen 1857 in 1891 and 1901 and am looking in to remarriages as I haven't found a death for Ellen Reed.

Hi again,

I can't see Ellen either in 1891 or 1901 nor a death/marriage  :-\

Cheetham Hill is a district of Manchester. I think the family were in Crumpsall in 1881.
You can see they are next to each other on the map.

Rawtenstall where the Margaret Ellen was in 1901 is quite some distance away in Lancashire and the Morris girls were living in Bradford, Manchester in 1891 which, if you look at the map, is round about where Ancoats is (on the map just near the large 'Manchester'.
Just found out that this link only links you to Google maps- you will have to enter Cheetham Hill.  ::)

The marriage on the other hand took place in Whalley Range which is the other side of Manchester (south on the map).
Hope all this makes sense  ;)

It may be worth trying the marriage certificate.
