Hi
Hoping I can get some ideas as to where someone would be buried if they died in Cockermouth in 1865 ( assuming they were Church of England) & are there any online searches so that I can find the grave ??
I am looking for the grave of George SEDGWICK. Death registered Dec Quarter 1865
I have already checked here - http://www.cockermouth.org.uk/graveyards.htm
Thanks

Have you got him in Cockermouth the census before he died? Because from the address you can work out which parish he was in. I'm assuming he did actually live in Cockermouth and not just the registration district. Suggest you look up http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/CUL/Cockermouth/index.html

Hi duckweed
George Sedgwick, in the 1861 census, is living at Jackson's Yard in the Parish of Crosthwaite (Sp?) in the town of Keswick.
-
... in which case he is most likely to have been buried at Keswick.

I've got 2 churches mentioned for Crossthwaite St Mungos and St Kentigerns

This is Saint Kentigern's Crossthwaite

Have you seen this?

In Cumberland, there were several cases of towns being in "village" parishes (and appearing as such in censuses) while having churches of their own - these examples come to mind-
Whitehaven/St Bees
Cockermouth/Brigham
Maryport/Crosscanonby
and Keswick/Crosthwaite
Here's Keswick church (St John's) http://www.visitcumbria.com/kes/chk3.htm
As SEDGWICK was living in a yard off Main Street, Keswick in 1861, it seems likely to me that he would have been buried there.

Thanks for your replies.
Any ideas on how I go about searching for George Sedgwick's Grave - doesn't help that I am in Australia.
George Sedgwick is my husband's great great great grandfather & the last one that I have to find where he was buried. ( I doubt that I will find his parents George & Mary Sedgwick)
Yes duckweed I have seen the website Sedgwick.org. Fred Sedgwick did a great job locating the line.

Hi Cathy
Have you got the death certificate for George? Or even an exact date from other sources?
Cockermouth Registration District would cover Keswick. You've a census in Keswisk.
If he did actually die in Keswisk, by this date, eithter church could apply. I know families who are split between the two. Crosthwaite was the whole area, but the church is still in Keswick, albeit on the edge, and many Keswick folkattended as they still do. St John's is nearer the centre on the other side and is the town church with its own burial ground, but either could apply.
Of course, he could have been taken back to a family plot out of town such as St John's in the Vale or \Threlkeld or wherever they'd lived. Or they could have moved to Cockermouth by the time of his death.
If you have quite a good date, someone might look in the papers for an announcement, but there are quite a few to choose from. Some people used a Penrith or Cumberland paper.
If you're unlucky, it's really a death certificate for these large districts unfortunately.
Last time I was at the record office, we got a lot of information from one of these churches but the other stopped quite early and I'm sorry I can't remember the details.
If you had an exact date, they might checlk both for you.
Someone might check the grave if you could find the number.
I'll see what I can see.
Best wishes

Hi Cathy
Do let us know how you get on, or if you have any more questions while you're waiting.
I know the cost adds up, but in this case I would, too. Then hopefully we can pin down which church and help you find a grave.
Best wishes from a cold wet England!

Hello Everyone
Well I have received the death certificate of George Sedgwick.
Details from the certificate:
When & Where died
23rd November, 1865
Shorley Croft
Keswick
Signature, description & residence of Informant:
Elizabeth Jackson
Present at the death
Kings Head Yard
Keswick
George Sedgwick, in the 1861 census, is living at Jackson's Yard in the Parish of Crosthwaite in the town of Keswick with his wife Ann.
In the 1851 census, George is recorded as a 50 year old ostler, living at King’s Head Yard, Keswick with his wife Ann (age 47).
Not exactly sure why George died at Shorley Croft & why Elizabeth Jackson from his address in the 1851 census was present at the death ! ?
Do you think that if I contacted the Record Office at Kendal (is this the one I should contact) that they would have any information regarding his place of burial ??
In Australia - especially in the State (translate to County if I was in England)of New South Wales -the death certificates also include the details of where the burial or cremation occured !
Thanks
Cathy

Shorley Croft is a present day address on the Penrith Road - see red marker http://tinyurl.com/ya32sgw
Notice too Shorley Lane close by. At the bottom of the picture you can see the parish church and, to the south of the church, Keswick Cemetery.
As you have the date and place of death, I would contact Whitehaven Records Office and see if they can give you a burial date http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives/recordoffices/whrec.asp
I see Elizabeth JACKSON was unmarried in 1851 but widowed in 1861 ::)

Hi Geoff
Thank you for the informatio & the links.
Are you a local ? & do you know what Shorley Croft is - I thought that it was a village ??
I will definately email Whitehaven Records Office - thanks kindly for the link !
I see Elizabeth JACKSON was unmarried in 1851 but widowed in 1861
Didn't even think to look into that situation - even thought I suspect something was a bit strange - will need to check that out too
Thanks again

Hi Goeffe and Cathy
Exciting! You definitely do get everywhere Goeffe.
I've walked down there endless times, living in Cumbria with loads of folk in the area, but I didn't know Shorley Croft and didn't know that was Shorley Lane.
There were definitely people from the area being buried in both places, St John's gave relief when the old Crosthwaite Church couldn't cope, specifically for Keswick. but loads of Keswick folk from all areas go to Crosthwaite.
It wouldn't be too big a job to ask them to check both churches now that you have a date.
Those cottages around there and on the lane are pretty old on the whole, but even so, I winder if it was literally a croft as in a small area of land for crops/livestock for the family to subsist on before the cottages were lall built. Owned by a Shorley?
Most of this area has been underwater - and Station Road close by abd Greta Bridge are some of the worst.

I can only think of old maps or especially a tithe map for more clues - though that really means going in the record office.
Great Stuff!
Best wishes

Actually, looking at the 1867 map at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/IndexMapPage2.aspx Shorley Croft may have been the name of a lane.
To tell the truth, my mam had an auntie who lived just round the corner in Victoria Street. Along the Penrith Road, facing the river, is the Twa Dogs Inn. Mum used to say that her Uncle Jonty used to keep it - I think he was a TYSON ... but normally, Keswick was just a place we passed through on the way to Whitehaven.

Hi Geoff & Emms
Have been doing a little search on the net & found this relating to the auction of 3 lots from 1884
http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/CUMBERLAND/2004-02/1075646329
WCT Saturday November 8th 1884 Auction of Property at Keswick
Shorley Croft is actually for sale now !
Most of this area has been underwater - and Station Road close by abd Greta Bridge are some of the worst.
Emms - the area of Cockermouth & images of the floods actually made it onto the Australian prime time news.
Hope everyone is recovering from the floods without too much inconvenience.

Those who have been flooded might not be straight again for a couple of years :(
After ruined furniture/carpets etc have been dumped, plaster removed from the affected walls etc, you have to get the dehumidifiers in, then the builders can't make a start till you get a certificate to say the house is "dry". In winter, this can obviously take some time. If there are hundreds of places flooded, there are not enough builders to go round. I think pretty well all of the shops in Cockermouth High Street were ruined.

My daughter was very badly affected by the Carlisle floods of 2005. She was out of her house and in temporary accommodation for nine months. And she was one of the lucky ones............

Sorry, off topic :-[

It was probably a bad choice of words - but I hope you understand my sentiment .

A HUGE thank you to Geoff ;D
Thanks to you - giving me the link to Whitehaven Record Office - they have replied & yes George Sedgwick is buried there - exactly where you said that you thought that he might be.
Problem solved - very happy here !!
Thanks again

I'm glad you found what you wanted :) We got there in the end.

In regards to Shorley Croft - I have sent an email to the real estate agent that has a listing at the moment for "Shorley Croft, 8 Penrith Rd"
to try to find out exactly what is "Shorley Croft"
-
For anyone interested - the real estate have just emailed me & Shorley Croft is the name of the house.

There is a photograph of this house in a 1935 album I found in a junk shop recently. I have uploaded it to Flickr: http://flic.kr/p/8VFhTE
It was for sale recently for £600,000. A bit out of my price range :)
