Title: MARS TRAINING SHIP
Post by: mccubbin on Wednesday 28 October 09 15:18 GMT (UK)
Hello,
I was wondering if some one can help.
My Great Granddad was on the Mars Training ship in 1880, age 11 from Aberdeen, now how would I go about finding out what he had done to end up there.
Thank you for any help.
McCubbin.

Dear McCubbin,

Have you checked the Mars records?  There is a website dedicated to the Mars training ship run by the author of the book "Send ye ta the Mars".

search for "sonsofthemars" on google

The records were rescued from a skip and are now stored in the Blythe Hall in Newport on Tay.  My great-great grandfathers brother was sent to the Mars.  My father phoned Blythe Hall and was given some details.  In our case his father was a sailor and away at sea and his step mother couldn't cope so he was sent to the Mars to prevent deliquency.

The other option I would suggest is looking up local papers.

I hope this helps.

Regards

Ore Dragon

Thank You,
one Dragon, I am a member of Mars Training ship website, but there is not any info on him just his number and when he was sent there.
I will give Blythe Hall a phone in the morning.
Thank you once again for putting me in the right direction
