Hi
Unfortunately - his medal card will not give you that type of information - you need his service record
The reason for him joining the Yorkshire Regiment will not be shown on any service record - it was presumably his choice
It will show when he joined up and where, plus other details
The CWGC website does not show his parents names - just that he was the brother of Frederick T. Day, of 10, Curtis Grove, Wilford Rd., Nottingham.
Where was Clifford born

Hi
He would have been conscripted the 1918 german offensive caused a lot of casualties and lads were moved to fill in the gaps in those regiments.

Hello Gig,
I double-checked on SDGW, because the Royal Berks service number did not look right and came up with this additional information:
Born: Headless Cross, Redditch
Enlisted: Birmingham
Resident: Webheath, Redditch
Died, France and Flanders, 7th Sept 1918
Formerly 3869; 2/1 Berkshire Yeomanry
The service number 71417 certainly fits (1917 re-numbering).
2/1 Berks Yeo did not serve overseas and 1/1 were in Egypt 1917/18, prior to becoming a Machine Gun Corps unit.
Possibly Clifford was posted to 1/1 for a time ???

Gig,
I think I have worked it out.
He probably joined mid to late 1916, (3219 George A Lailey, joined May 1916), was compulsorily transferred to the Royal Berks (after March 1917), but somehow his Yeomanry service number has ended up on the Medal Index Card. Compulsorily transferred again to the Yorkshire Regiment.
Do you know when he was taken prisoner?

Hi Gig
Large draft of men were sent from the 2/1st Berks Yeo were transferred to the 4th Bn Green Howards in circa 1917. The 2/1st by the mounted on bicycles not horses were engaged both on home defence duties and the training up on conscripts. Wil conscription your were generally sent where needed and not nesessarily where you wanted hence a Birmingham man ending up with the Berks Yeo.

Andrew welcome to rootschat and thank you for the information i surpose its a case of filling the gaps were there needed ,i have another relative who was also born at redditch and he served with the 51st highland division

Hello Gig,
The reason I asked if you knew when he was taken prisoner, was that I found the service record of Roy Gilbert, Berkshire Yeomanry.
He joined 2/1 earlier than Clifford, but was compulsorily transferred to the Royal Berks 17/4/18 and then to 1/4 Yorkshire Regiment a day later (?).
He was reported missing 27/5/18 and subsequently found to be a PoW.

hello phil
thank you for your reply ive had a look at the yorks website and have narrowed the dates down when clifford was captured to the 25/26 or 27th of may 1918 during the german offesive on the river aisne .the yorks were in camp between the 16th and 25th of april which covers the date roy gilbert was transfered, maybe clifford moved at that or simular time
im sorry no i dont have ancestry but thank you for posting thre link

Hello Gig,
There is not really much more to be gleaned from Roy Gilbert's service record.
I have listed all the relevant dates and postings.
If you do want more detail from it, PM me. ;)
