I wonder if it is possible to check the baptism records for St Michael's for 1830 - 1840. I have found four of the children of William Dent and his wife listed as Ellen/Eleanor/Elinor. These are Joseph Hetherington (transcribed as Etherington in the reference that I have, but listed as Hetherington in Australian BMD records), John, William and Ann Eliza. William was baptised at Holy Trinity, but I have found no other listings there. There are two more children born before the family migrated to South Australia in 1840. These are Sarah Jane and Nathaniel. Nathaniel may have been baptised under another name as he is the only child with only one name in other records that I have referred to, and I have been unable to find any other references to him besides shipping lists and oral history transcribed to biographical directories.
Thank you
-
Hi
If they definitely left England before 1841 then this baptism does not belong to the same family
HANNAH DENT Christening: 30 AUG 1841 Saint Michael, Coventry
Father: WILLIAM DENT Mother: ELEANOR
-
Thank you Carole.
That is a little odd, for a number of reasons.
William and Eleanor (spelt Ellenor on the ships passenger list) left England on the "John" on the 12th of September 1839. Joseph Hetherington, Nathaniel, John, William, Sarah Jane and Ann Eliza are recorded with them. Sarah Jane died not long after their arrival. They then had another child named Thomas Agen, born in 1841 in South Australia. There are no birth or baptism records before 1842 in South Australia. Followed by 4 more daughters. Rather strangely, there are no Dent births recorded before 1855.
Not only this, but Eleanor had a sister named Hannah. Eleanor's maiden name was Eleanor Beasley, and she had 2 sisters, Hannah and Susannah (this is second hand information, I haven't checked the records yet) and a brother Joseph, who were also baptised at St Michaels. (Parents Joseph Beasley and Susannah). Her brother Joseph married an Anne Lacy and had a child before migrating to South Australia on the "Orleana" on the 29th of February 1840.
A bit of a puzzle it seems, as each of the other children seem to fit. William and Eleanor were married at St. Lawrence's, Foleshill, Oct 10 1831, and lived at Jordan Well before migrating. I would say there were two couples of that name, except that the other children seem to match, and Eleanor is perhaps not such a common name, and a child named Hannah is rather a coincidence.
I don't really know what to make of it.
-
Hi
I did check the 1841 census for a couple of that name but nothing
There is a Hannah Dent birth in June qtr 1841 in Tamworth and the 1851 has a Hannah Dent aged 9 living in Coventry St Michael with parents William and LUCY
-
Hi Carole,
Yes, I checked Hannah Dent after I replied to you yesterday and came up with two listings for Coventry, one of them for St Michael's. The St Michael's entry was a baptism for 30 AUG 1841, William and Eleanor, and the other a birth in 1842 in Coventry, parents William and Lucy. There are other children listed for William and Lucy, so I thought it might have been a transcription error and double-up, but probably not, it seems.
Carole, do you have original parish entries, or is there another way I can access them? I am relatively new to researching in England.
Many thanks.
-
Hi
Sorry - I don't have access to any parish registers but the IGI entries are transcribed from the original records
I don't know whether these links are of any use to you. The first one is the main page of the website and the second is the Coventry section

Thank you Carole,
I will have a look at these, and go over all the entries there and those that I have found elsewhere. I have actually found a number of William and Eleanor/Ellens for the time period, so I will sift through and make sure I have all of the details right.
I also found Susannah Beasley's christening at Saint Michael's, 4 AUG 1806. She died 20 AUG 1812. Eleanor christened 24 Oct 1808 at Saint Michaels. Joseph Beasley, 2 Jan 1815. But no Hannah so far.
Thank you for your help. It is greatly appreciated, especially when one is so far away from these sources.
Best wishes

I am researching my family history in Australia. William Owen Kitchener Dent and his wife Eleanor are relatives of mine. Their son William married Caroline Perkins they had 9 children in total that I can find . They moved to Western Australia and are buried in the Boyup Brook cemetery. One of their children William Owen Dent who later changed his name to Patrick William Dent is my grandfather. I am extremely interested to learn more about the family roots in the UK and also happy to help anyone seeking move details on the movements in Australia.
-
How nice to hear from you.
The William Owen Dent who was the son of William Owen Kitchener Dent, married Caroline Perkins in South Australia 1861. However he was born in England before 1839 according to several sources. The birth record in Coventry would make his birth 1837. There is a William Dent recorded in the SA BMD as dying in 1905 at age 73, but I think this one may be too old, and he appears to have no family. I have William Owen Dent's death as 1908, but will have to check where I sourced that from. I don't have a place of Death or Burial. William and Caroline had 9 children born in South Australia. Their second child was named William John Owen Dent, and he was born in Port Elliot in 1865. I have a marriage record for his older sister, in Port Elliot in 1888, but no records for marriages of any of the other children.
I am descended from Thomas Agin Dent, who was the first child born to William and Eleanor in South Australia.
I wonder if you have any record of Nathaniel Dent, who was William Owen Dent's older brother? He arrived in South Australia with the rest of the family but there are no death or marriage records for him.

Hello,
I am researching the descendants of Joseph BEESLEY in South Australia and have found two William DENTs migrating early to SA: in 1839 and 1840.
DENT William Owen Kitchener, Eleanor (nee ROBERTS?), Wm, Joseph Hetherington, John Mazeppa, Nathaniel, Sarah Jane, Ann Eliza arrived 1840-02-05 on John (1) from London 1839-09-12 [Source:1,6,7,IGI]
DENT William, wife, 3 sons, dau arrived 1840-06-10 on Orleana from London 1840-02-29 [Source:2,7,20,23(6)]
Source: http://www.familyhistorysa.info/shipping/passengerlists.html JFB 6 Sep 2010
Joseph (brother of an Eleanor BEASLEY, father Joseph, chr 24 Oct 1808) migrated to SA. He arrived Port Adelaide on the Orleana in June 1840 with his wife and their young son Joseph. This is my family.
I think the two siblings Joseph and Eleanor emigrated together, so the DENT family should only have 4 children on arrival.
They also settled 800 meters from each other, in Hindmarsh and Thebarton.
The family arriving in 1839 had the more children and seemed to live further down the coast.
I will add more info. as I get it.
-
Yes I think you have something there.
As there are two families with similar parents names arriving in SA in the same year, that would explain a lot.
If you go to boards.ancestry.com.au and do a surname search for William Owen Kitchener Dent, you will find the information that I found some time ago. It is a bit of a jumble but it seems both families have been mixed together there. Your William would be the 37 year old from Jordan Well, Coventry, fitting smith. I haven't been able to contact the person who posted this information to get references and sort it out, but your information may help us to do so.
I probably do have the wrong Eleanor, but as there is a baptism record for their son Joseph (H)Etherington Dent on the IGI for Coventry in 1832, both families must have originated in Coventry as well. What a coincidence.

I have checked the SA state library website at
http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/fh/passengerlists/1840Orleana.htm
and there was a "DENT, William and wife, 3 sons, daughter (Ann Eliza?)"
aboard with my "BEASLEY, Joseph and wife, son", definitely on THEIR Orleana.
I have not seen their handwritten copies recently but trust their web information and so believe they came out together.
According to the same web site,
William Owen Kitchener DENT with wife Ellenor and 6 children arrived as cabin passengers on the "John" arrive 05 Feb 1840
http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/fh/passengerlists/1840John.htm
I have not been able to access the originals of the Adelaide 1841 census but according to the CD for the census DENT William of Ann street Hindmarsh had 1male (m) under 7 (U7),
2 m U14, 1 m U50; 1 f U7, 1 f U50.
Thus 2 parents and 4 children.

Hi sabees,
I have obtained a copy of Ann Eliza's birth certificate. Her mother is definitely Eleanor Beasley, and she was born in Jordan Well, William's occupation recorded as "file smith".
The annotation of surname "Roberts" on the "John" passenger list is an incorrect additon put in at a later date according to a member of SAGHS who has seen the original.
The family on the census could be the other William Dent and family. It is possible that William and Eleanor were already on their new holding and missed the census at that time. Or the older sons could have been elsewhere on that particular day. Lots of possibilities.
Cheers

Browyn,
I have been scouring the South Australian newspapers for DENT family pre 1910 or so.
Most of my findings are found at
http://trove.nla.gov.au/list?id=4133 (http://trove.nla.gov.au/list?id=4133)
but I am still trying to untangle it. There are a couple of death notices for the original immigrants.

I see this thread hasn't been active for a while, but it seems I "may" have stumbled across the elusive NATHANIEL DENT that arrived on the John in 1840. I have family photos of WILLIAM C DENT and CAROLINE PERKINS that suggests WILLIAM C DENT was possibly NATHANIEL as the photos are marked WILLIAM C ( NATHANIEL) DENT. If this is true and I will double check with older relatives, this may solve the NATHANIEL mystery, but then of course if this is the case we are missing the other WILLIAM listed as being on the John in 1840.
WILLIAM C DENT was my great great GRANDFATHER and WILLIAM OWEN who later became know as PATRICK WILLIAM DENT was my Grandfather.

Hey Darryl.....Ive been doing some digging this weekend. I found Elenors obituary on trove and when she died in 1892, it said she had 4 sons and 4 daughters who mourned her. I also found Thomas Agins Obituary...the dates on ancestry are wrong, he died 1919 not 1888.....so that being the case, William either IS Nathaniel or Nathaniel died pre 1892 like his sister Sarah.....for there to be 8 living children in 1892 at Elenors death. The passenger list for the john def says 6 children tho.....maybe he died on the ship coming over...he would have only been a toddler if born 1837.
And BGOR.....Can you please advise where you got William John Owen from?? William & Caroline are my great great grandparents.....and he is the 3rd born son not the second.
-
Ahhh ok....Of Course....William John Owen.....He is William and Carolines son, not WOKs.....He is the one who changed his name to Patrick (Darryls line)......
Oh and if William was born in sept 1837 and Nathaniel was also supposedly born in 1837 also...he would have to have been born in January and she fell pregnant straight after....I don't think that's possible....which makes Nathaniel closer to being an impossibility.....he would have to have been born in 1836....
-
Along with other descendants of the Dent family I have been trying to untangle the facts from the misunderstandings for this family.
There doesn't seem to be a Nathaniel at all. The only Sarah Jane is the daughter of Henry and Jane Dent buried at West Terrace Cemetery. There is no other Sarah Jane buried around that time. The cemetery office checked.
The only passenger lists for the John seem to be compiled by Dianne Cummings. Barry Leadbeater checked for me and found no original list. He did find a newpaper piece saying that a Mr Dent was a cabin passenger on the John. He found a booking record for a William Dent, wife, 4 sons and a daughter which matches our family. They arrived on the Orleana on 10th June 1840. This seems to be the more likely arrival.
My email is bronwynlinz@hotmail.com if you would like to contact me

Hi Bron, Are you saying that you now think our line of William and Jane came on the Orleana not the John? So maybe Elleanor did come with Brother Joseph to Australia, as he came on the Orleana didn't he?
-
Yes that is how it appears according to the information I have been given, and the family details tie in with our family
-
There was a Joseph Beasley and family on the same ship. He is believed to be her brother. I haven't looked further into that yet.
-
Hi all, it was great to stumble across this thread, I am a descendant of William Owen Kitchener Dent who arrived on the John in 1840, Williams daughter Ann who arrived with him in 1840 and a daughter William had in 1843 in Port Elliot, Emma, were married to two brothers William Farrow and Edgar Farrow respectively. Edgar Farrow and Emma Dent are my great great grand parents. Does anyone have any pictures of William Owen Kitchener Dent or know where in Warwickshire they lived prior to leaving for Australia. I have a photo of Ann Dent but would love to find one of Emma Dent so if anyone has one or any information regarding Emma and/or Ann can you please let me know.
-
Hi N Farrow,
No pics of WOK unfortunately....would also love one but he is an elusive man. He and Ellenor were married in Foleshill and most of the births show as Coventry. Its rumoured that Ellenor was a Gypsy and that his parents funded their trip to Oz because of the shame of that. I don't have a pic of Emma but I do have one of Edgar on my ancestry. I will send u my email address.
-
Hi N Farrow, great to see your post. I am also descended from this mystery man. William Owen Kitchener Dent. A few other descendants and I have been trying to unravel the mystery. It is difficult as there don't seem to be any registrations in the early South Australian days and what ones we have found give very little information. I dont know if there are more detailed records written. For example, on the official marriage record on Ancestry it says my ancestor's father was WOK but on the copy I received in the mail, there were no parents named.
I have tried to get in touch with bgor and Diane Cummings who compiled the passenger lists that are on record. There are a lot of things we need to confirm yet.
If you would like to contact me by email I would be happy to keep you updated with what we find..

Hi Kisschick, thanks for the information, getting a picture of Edgar would be fantastic I will email you.
-
Hi Bron, thanks also for the reply its great to have contact with others descending from the same family line. I am keen to keep contact so we can all share what information we do find.
-
Hi N Farrow, yes I think it is the only way we are going to get anywhere with this family, if at all...
I am always keen to meet family :)
-
Hi N Farrow,
Great to hear from you. The Dents lived in Jordan Well, Coventry. We are currently tracing them through possible family in Mancetter. Email me through my website and I will provide a link to our conversation.
I have a photo of Thomas Agin, son number four. Would love to share with both yourself and Bron and try to gather the siblings together
