Hi
Have you found a birth for the son William? That might help cut down the search dates. I assume you have looked at FreeBMD?

took a bit of a gamble. reckoned son william born about 1909 therefore william father could be born about 1880 ish. looked on 1911 census and in Sunderland found a william Anderson age 34 b Ryhope; wife Dorothy age 34 b. Seaham with a son William age8 b. sunderland + siblings. William & Dorothy married 8 years (1903) so a possibility???
Diddy (but still cant find a marriage anywhere????

Hi, this is my first use of this web site, not sure how things work yet!
I am a direct descendant of William and Mary Anderson, (married Hurworth 1829). I have the certificate of Marriage. This is where my trail ends, I would love to know more about Dorothy Shaw, have a fellow family historian who doesn't live too far away, about to make a trip to search. Any info you have would be appreciated. I have lots of information about William, documentary and anecdotal, and lots about the family generally, get in touch and we'll swop info, yours, Storg

Dear Joscar,
Hope you're feeling better and nothing too serious. Morbid fear of hospitals! Best to be avoided if possible.
I'll try and give you some info to cheer you up.
William Anderson (b ap 1809 @ Durham) originally married to Mary Goldsborough (b ap 1809 @ Hurworth on Tees) remarried on 31st Dec 1856 to Margaret Hill (b ap 1817) daughter of David Hill and Janet Stevenson.
William & Mary had three children: Thomas (b ap 1836); Mary Ann (b ap 1839) and Frederick (b ap 1844), through whom I am descended.
Frederick had 6 children: William (b 1865) (through whom I'm descended); Thomas (b ap 1869); Annie (b ap 1873); Mary (b ap 1875); Isabella (b ap 1878) and Elizabeth (b ap 18180)
William married an Ann Hamilton. If you want to know more prefer to do it over a private email from now on. (Ask if you want to know more).
My cousin and I have been trying to get back beyond William and Mary for years, but without success. Your email on this site got us going again.
On the remarriage certificate of William it names his parents: William and Dorothy Shaw, (great cheers of happiness after all this time searching). Now what we need to know is where were they married? It was not at Hurworth because the Hurworth marriages are on line, and there's no William Anderson marrying a Dorothy Shaw. There is however a John Goldsborough marrying an Ann Johnson in Jan 1809 and their first daughter was a Mary Ann (b ap 1809) which could be our Mary.
This is all we know, but I will now sex up the discussion, (for those red blooded males reading this), and reveal that in our family it is regarded as fact that one of our ancestors sailed with Captain Cook and died in the Pacific a week before he did! (Gasps!) He was a William Anderson (1750 - 1778), Surgeons's mate (glorified carpenter) who joined the Endeavour in 1771. and we would really like to make the connection, hence our frustration. So any information on William and Dorothy Anderson would be gratefully received.
Of course reciprocity will be the order of the day. Any research in Suffolk and Norfolk can be arranged so long as it isn't too far away.
yours Storg
