Hi all - has anyone heard of a place called Shorncliff in Kent? According to the 1891 census one of my gt. uncles was born there in 1875 and I can't find it on the map. Was the name changed?
Appreciate any help.

Just had a quick look at the gazetteer on www.old-maps.co.uk Shorncliffe Camp is adjacent to Sandgate (a tad west of Folkstone).

Hi Pauline - thanks for that. Does it still exist?

Hi Pauline
Its a little while since I last went to folkestone, but part of Shorncliffe Camp still remained - although on the eastern side of the camp is a big Tesco Store, and on the Northern side is the Channel Tunnel Folestone terminus and the motorway. (big loop where trains turn around and go back through the tunnell)
Some of the huts still survived and I think they are now used by Army Cadets.

Hello Pauline
Although you now have a reply to your query, I just wonder what map you are actually using? If you go to www.streetmap.co.uk and put in Shorncliffe (making sure to indicate GB Place where appropriate) you will be given a map which pinpoints the place where the Army Camp is.
It may come in useful if you are looking for any other places.

Hello Peter - I looked in Bartholomew's Road Atlas of Britain and Shorncliff didn't feature in the index. Thanks for the website - I'm sure it will come in useful.

I've just been searching for the same place myself as one of my ancestors was born there in 1864. Her Birth Certificate actually states place of birth as Female Hospital, Shorncliff Camp, Elham, Kent.

Shorncliffe Camp is the army barracks - still there and currently in occupation of the ghurka regiment. If you ancestor was a civilian then it would come under the parish of Cheriton

Thanks for replying. My ancestor was born at Shorncliffe - his father was a soldier but whether it was at a hospital or at the barracks I have no idea. Thanks again. :)
