Husband was John.

Hi there Simon ... quicker on the button than me ;D

Snap
Also on the above records she is Mary Elizabeth.
Seeing Houghton twice, it may be her maiden name.

It might be worth looking to see whether these two births are issue from older brothers (ie William & Thomas)

Hi Scruffyones ........Death Certificates will indicate how long a person has been in NZ. Ages of Children are listed as well.

The Balclutha Branch (http://www.balcluthagenealogy.org.nz) of the NZSG may be able to assist.

Hi Scruffyones
It would make awfully good sense to purchase the New Zealand birth record of Sarah Houghton STEPHENSON. :)
(Request a "printout" of the record - this gives the maximum amount of information. Ordering information is on the NZ BDM website.)
From 1876, NZ Birth records include the following :
* Birth places of parents
* When and where, married.
(I can't see a marriage in NZ for a John STEPHENSON to a Mary Elizabeth / Elizabeth Mary ? ).

Hmmm ... I see there is a death in WA for Houghton STEPHENSON.
At Karrakatta Cemetery, WA, Wesleyan section, a John and Mary Elizabeth STEPHENSON buried together. ?
Might these be the parents of Sarah Houghton STEPHENSON ?
-
thank you everyone for your help so far.
one little piece of information always leads to another thousand questions. especially with this branch as sarah houghton stephenson is all i have from her daughter's marriage certificate.
i discovered her name on the nz bdm but hadnt found her siblings except houghton. which lead me to believe that the name may have been from the maternal side of the family but since there is other stephenson's with houghton must be from the paternal side.
thanks lu for the suggestion for the birth certificate i might have to go along with that.
another question it leads to - why did she leave nz for outback western australia???
KPH - not sure if they do would list how long the person lived in other places on certificates in australia.
o so confusing
thanks again everyone- can only keep searching

Assuming that the John and Mary Elizabeth STEPHENSON buried WA, are her parents, then perhaps the whole family made the move to OZ ?
Incidentally, I don't see a (suitable) death in NZ for a Mary Elizabeth (and searching for a John STEPHENSON death is difficult, without knowing a year of birth.)

thanks again lu
all the surnames in my family are common names, so i know searching for them without much information isnt easy. o well makes it all the more intriguing
-
Hi
Common names. ::) :D Yes, that's why it's important really to get official BDM records for verification ... believe me, without them, it's so easy to "go down wrong pathways" only to find out eventually that you've got "the wrong family". :)
To find out what type of information is included in WA BDM records, have a look at RootsChat's Australian Board >> Resources Section >> "Western Australian Records" :

Mary Elizabeth is listed as living in Subiaco at her death - probably suburban even 100 years ago and certainly more so than Kaitangata.

A little bit of information.
Houghton Stephenson was admitted to Denniston school on the 10 Jan 1887
His birth date is recorded as 2 August 1881 and he left this school on 16 December 1890 for Waimangaroa School
Houghton Stephenson..... He was admitted on 12 April 1891 to Waimangaroa School and the last day was 26 September 1892. Reason he left was because the destination was for Australia :D
So this should help for how long in NZ for Houghton Stephenson.
Further enquiries for the above to the Nelson NZSG
Cheers

Hello MichelleHolt ... welcome to RootsChat :)
... just to say that the original poster of this query, was last online in this forum back in October 2017.
[Even though some time has passed, there's always the chance there will be a response to new information being posted. :) ]
I did notice too, that there are now quite a number of family trees (about 39 - 45), for both Houghton STEPHENSON and Sarah Houghton STEPHENSON (BROWN) on the ancestry.com website.
A number of these trees are also supported with copies of (official) documents - e.g. Death Certificate for John STEPHENSON (aged 92) d. 1941 ... along with further info from England sources.
