I've posted on here before about my 4x great grandfather and the whereabouts of his birth a while ago but now the family are really driving me to distraction!
Benjamin Broadhead born about 1809 in Wakefield or Walton depending on which census you look at although the two are very close. There is no trace for a birth/baptism of Benjamin Broadhead on the IGI (well, not that I can find). So I thought I would send off for his marriage cert to help me and Wendy47 very kindly found the entry below on Ancestry (the index was for 3rd quarter, 1839) but when I searched on both Ancestry and FindMyPast I could only get the transcriptions index, not the original index which as you can see the page number is partially obliterated. And there is no marriage on the marriage index ??? that I searched and try as I might I cannot find the index that Wendy47 found for me.
On the IGI there is a marriage in Alverthorpe for Benjamin Broadhead and Ellen Broadhead in 1839 but it is a submitted entry. So today I phoned the Wakefield Registry Office and a very helpful lady searched in 1839 and two years either side and there were no entries for Benjamins marriage but the entry for it is below for all to see!!! I told her about that entry but all she could say was that they had no records of it. By the way, his wife's name is Ellen Crowther (on the IGI her birth record is Crouder) EDIT: There is a marriage for Benjamin Broadhead in Wortley but that's not the right one.
On to Benjamins children! His eldest daughter, Selina, who is my 3xg grandmother is an elusive creature too. Again I cannot find ANY record of her birth. From different census she is listed as being born in Wakefield (the most likely), or Goole where she ended up living but the only Selina Broadhead I can find as being born in 1844 is one in Sheffield - I sent off for that certificate but it's the wrong parents. Again on the IGI there is no Selina with the parents Benjamin & Ellen. I have the certifiacte for Selina's sister Ada Louise Broadhead who was born in 1855 in Wakefield: right parents and appearing on 1861 census with all the right family and I have Selina's marriage certificate which lists Benjamin as her father and with the right occupation.
Benjamin & Ellen had 6 children (that I know of) but I can only find birth records for 3 of them.
Can anyone suggest where I can go from here. I've searched everywhere I can think of so ANY suggestions very welcome indeed.
Sorry for rambling on!

Hi Kim: If I've interpreted your post correctly. ::)
You can see the original index page, as per your post, by looking on FreeBMD. If you search for Benjamin Broadhead's birth in 1839, there is the entry and by the side of it is a "pair of spectacles". If you click on that you get a new page and on there is an icon - see original image - and if you click on that you can open the file and see the page.
There is a marriage for Benjamin Broadhead in the same quarter in Wortley District, page 533, and if you click on that number you can see all the other names appearing on the same page, although I didn't spot an Ellen.
When you start your search for Benjamin on FreeBMD, if you click on the "All Types" you will get both the marriage and birth entries at the same time. Benjamin's birth has been double-entered, one person has interpreted the page number as 615, the other as 6* (meaning they can't read all the numbers).
Hope I've interpreted your post correctly. ;D

That index image is from FreeBMD for the 1839 birth registration for a Benjamin BROADHEAD.
Marriage registration started 1837, not all marriages were registered, nor are all parish registers available on the IGI.
The same applies for Births and baptisms.

Hi BumbeB & Mick
Thanks for that - I really thought that it was the marriage index that Wendy47 had found for me, how silly of me!! No wonder that poor lady at the records office couldn't find the marriage :-[
Oh well, he is still elusive, grrrrrrrrrrrrr
Thanks for your help
A very embarrased Kim

Kim,
I have the 1813 - 1837 marriage index for Sandal Magna - there is a marriage for Benjamin Broadhead and Ellen Crowther on the 13th February 1837 - both "of this parish".
-
Hi willsmum
Wow, that's fantastic - thank you so much ;D. So that's just before registration began although as Mick said, not every bmd was registered in the early days.
Thanks again - now if I can just trace down the elusive Selina birth............
Cheers
Kim (still :-[ !!)

Kim,
I don't know if you have Benjamin Broadhead on the 1841 census - mistranscribed as Broadford, with wife Ellen and first daughter Ellen c1840, all born in Yorkshire.
Piece 1271, Book 1, Folio 11, Page 14
There is a burial for a Ellen Broadhead aged 1 year, of Wakefield, 28th March 1842, St Helen's Sandal Magna. A possibility ?
-
Hi Willsmum
Yes, a definate possibility as I have never found them on the 1841 (even though I searched using a wildcard).
On following census their oldest child is Charles who was born in 1842 and I have just found him on the IGI having been christened in April 1842 in Sandal Magna. So I would think that there is every possibility that Ellen is their child especially as they married in 1837 and most married couples in those days seemed to have their first child within a year (or so it seems in my family tree!)
Thanks so much for your help - I never would have looked in Sanford Magna if you hadn't found them.

Hi Kim,
I wonder if this is your Selina with name either mistranscribed, or misheard. It looks a good bet to me.
Sabina Broadhead, 1st qrt 1845, Wakefield, vol 22 page 720 or 726 (looks like 720 to me)
-
Sorry, Kim it's not her, she (Sabina) is on the 1851 census with father Adam. I'll do some more looking.
-
Hi Libby
I found her and thought the same as you until I realised there were different parents. My Selina is really elusive - i know that in 1844 registration was in its infancy and many people didn't bother but Selina's elder brother Charles (born 1842) was registered and I also found him on the IGI under Sandal Magna but I really can't find Selina - the only thing I can think is that her surname was mistranscribed but I've done wildcard searches too ???
Her marriage cert gives benjamin as her father and with the occupation of 'waterman' which he was - back to the search!!!
Thanks for your help
Kim
-
If father was a waterman, then she could possibly have been baptised anywhere on his route, which doesn't make your task any easier I'm afraid. :(
And, as you say, registration wasn't compulsory at that time. However, someone once told me that "they'll be found when they want to be found" and I'm beginning to believe it. :)

Hi BumbleB
I reckon thats very true! And of course you could spend a fortune getting 'possible' certificates - just in case. If it wasn't for the fact that I am alive and kicking I would have thought she was imaginary lol.
In the 1851 census the family were listed as York St Cuthbert 'coal vessel laid on the River Ross' but I've searched for every bloomin Selina Broadhead born in the country I think - that's why I really thought I'd found her born in Sheffield >:(
Kind regards

Kim,
I came across your entry today, can I just add this, which may or not help you. There was an advert in the Leeds Mercury in 1835 for the sale of a stone-house at Newbiggin Hill, in the occupation of a Benjamin Broadhead.
The full advert reads thus:
The Leeds Mercury Saturday, May 30, 1835
Sale by Mr. H. Badger-NEW MILLER DAM near Wakefield (by orders of the Executors of the late Mr. Thomas Goodair) at the Dam Inn, at New Miller Dam near Wakefield, in the county of York.
All those 5 stone-built dwelling houses with the yard and appurtenances thereto belonging pleasantly situate upon Newbiggin Hill, or Hill Top, at New Miller Dam, in the township if Sandal Magna, in the said county in the several occupations of Thomas Benn, Thomas Earnshaw, Benjamin Broadhead, John Bowman, and John Jenkinson. The tenants will show the premises and all further particulars may be known at application to Mr. B Badger, the auctioneer, South Terrace Rotherham or Mr. Badger, Attorney, Rotherham. Rotherham, May 21st, 1835

Hi Tom
Thanks so much for that - I'm reckon that could be one of my Benjamin's - the one I've mentioned in this post and I've discovered his father was also Benjamin, also of Sandal Magna.
I never thought I would see one of my ancestors mentioned 'in print' unless they'd done something very great or very awful!
Thanks again ;D

Just read your 'driving me mad' on the Broadhead family. I sympathise.
I think the Lucy Smith you are looking for is my Gt Gt Aunt's daughter.
Lucy Smith was born in Menston Yorkshire she was baptised at Carlinghow Batley Yorkshire. 21/7/1895 She had a brother Norman who died in WW1 age 18.
Both her parents worked at the Asylum. They moved to Leeds where Arthur became a church warden - they were living in Leeds when notification came of their son's death. I have been searching for Lucy for a long time and I do believe that your family are mine.
Her father was Arthur Lawrence Smith and her mother was Mary Elizabeth Crabtree.
I have photographs of Mary Elizabeth but none of the rest of the Smith family.
Best wishes
Nadine Crabtree
