Hi I'm Terry and am trying to trace info on my greatgrandfather Thomas Rooney 1871 son of john c.1848 from Ireland.I believe they are from county down. I have a marriage cert 25/12/1891 to margaret harney at st patrick's church Wapping and I believe died in 1906 st george in the east london. the limited family info i have is that he was a sailor and died in greenwich seaman's hospital but i have no evidence of this occupation at time of marriage dock worker

1901 census there's Thomas Rooney, age 30, born Co.Down Ireland, prisoner in Wandsworth. Could this be him? If so, have you found him in any earlier English census records?

Hi Terry,
I have a Thomas Rooney, Father John, born 29 Dec 1869 and two Thomas' born 1871 but both their fathers are Patrick but all three are Co. Down. If it helps I can pass details.

Thank you both,
I think it might be him in wandsworth 1901 i have found a rooney family in 1881 census in kirkdale but as i dont know when they came over its just a guess. birth date is just abt so your 1869 thomas might be the one and any info you have would be apprec.unfortunately I have so little info

Terry,
Thomas Rooney born to John Rooney and Anne Killian in Warrenpoint, Co. Down, 29 Dec 1869. Hope this helps.

A daughter of John & Anne Rooney is also listed in IGI so it would help to find the family on a census to identify names and birthplaces of any other children.

if the 81 census is correct then siblings are mary a 1862 and francis 1866

this comes from the ros davies site;
john rooney, husband of Anne Killen/Killian; father of Francis James b. 12 May 1865 & Eliza Jane b. 23 Nov 1868 & Thomas b. 29 Dec 1869. the same info is on the emerald ancestors site.
francis james' date of birth fits in but no mention of mary.

If Mary Rooney was born 1862 there would be no birth certificate so perhaps that's why she's not listed in IGI and on Ros Davies' website.

there is a birth and death of an eliza jane rooney in 1868,newry district, that might explain why she isn't on the 1881 census with the family.

Terry,
Warrenpoint is a sub-district of Newry and Newry is the Registration District for BMDs.

Hello Terry
I've just started researching the family and always thought that my dad's side was going to be difficult due to them travelling all over the world. But after reading this, it's nice to get out of Wapping!
My dad, Richard Campbell was Margaret Rooney nee Harney, 2nd Child with Alfred Campbell. She married Alfred 23 Nov 1911. I'm a bit confused with my nan as she now has three birth years, meaning she was either confused as to when she was born or, decided to say she was older to Thomas and quite a bit younger to Alfred.
If you look at the census for 1911 you'll find Margaret with Mary Ann, then 16 at 13 Dundee Street. She says she's married and born in Wapping. We know it's her, because that's where my dad was born.
The census for 1901 has a Catherine Harney living at No.12, I'm wondering whether that's an aunt. There's a Catherine Harney on the marriage certificate of 1911.
The story is that when my dad was born (6 Apr 1916) he had married sisters. We didn't know that nan had been married twice and thought grandad being a seaman, meant that the gap in years was quite possible.
My Aunt Annie used to have a large photo on the wall of my dad aged around 5 with his sister Mary Ann. My sister Kathleen is named after my dad's other sister.
We also have an Uncle Tommy that I can't find anywhere!
So, new found relative, anything else you can enlighten me on will be most appreciated.

Another child for John Rooney and Ann Killian :
17 Nov 1861, Daniel , son of John Rooney & Ann Killian. Sponsors : Patrick Killian, Lucy Rooney
taken from the Clonallan RC parish records (Warrenpoint is part of Clonallan parish)
I must add that the Rooney surname was extremely common in Co. Down so John and Ann (above) may not be your Thomas' parents.
