Title: Francis J Short
Post by: Barbsie on Monday 19 October 09 11:46 BST (UK)
I have a Francis J Short born Richmond Barracks, Dublin 1888 showing up in Thomas & Mary Ann Fordham census 1891 and 1901 in Tottenham/Edmonton, Middlesex as a grandson.

As the surname is different I am taking it that 1 of the daughters married a Short, but can't find which one.

Not sure what happens to him after 1901.  Somebody suggested he may have gone to Canada but can't find a record of it.

Any suggestions?

There is a marriage in 1887 which looks very likely.

Mar 1887. St Geo, Hanover Square 1a/657
Francis J Short
Annie Fordham

Thank you Jen that is a possibility.
I guess the only way to be sure is to send off for the certificate.  I did discount this one as there was not an Annie Fordham showing up anywhere on previous census but it may be one of hte sisters using a middle name or something.

It's the Francis J. coincidence which seems almost too good to ignore.

You could send for the younger Francis's birth certificate, which would confirm his parents' names.
The ref is incomplete but this looks like it.

Jun 1887 Hendon 3a/1_8
Francis James Fordham

 - Francis John Short signed up for WWI in Canada. Gives his dob as 20 Dec 1887, Richmond Barracks, Dublin, Ireland and his next of kin as his wife Elizabeth Leta in Ingersoll, Ontario.

Although the age is off, I believe he's listed as a boarder in Ingersoll in 1911 (as Frank Short)

A marriage in Ontario would give his parents' names (I think he's on there as Francis John Short, m. Elizabeth Leta Young, parents John Short and Anna but I cannot access the full info).

If this is the family I think it is, how about Thomas and Mary's daughter Hannah?

 - Irish registration indexes do show an Ann Short b. 1861-ish death registered Jul-Sep 1888 in Dublin South, as well as the birth of Francis John Short in the same district Jan-Mar 1888. That would fit reasonably closely with Hannah Fordham, and explain why Francis ended up with his grandparents.
