Title: Swinford Workhouse
Post by: Ebch on Sunday 18 October 09 15:41 BST (UK)
If a birth was in Swinford Workhouse would it mean that the mother was resident there or in 1864 was it also a lying in hospital?  So far I haven't found this information anywhere.  Thanks.  (The notifiers of the birth were described as 'occupiers Swinford)

I'll try putting it another way :)  If a birth certificate named mother and father and father's occupation and place of birth as Swinford Workshouse- would the workhouse have accepted the mother in 1864 if the father was around and working?

I know the workhouses accepted entire families - althought they were generally split up.

I suppose it is possible that the birth cert could be stating the father's usual occupation - rather than his current occupational status - i.e. in the workhouse.

Thanks for that Shane - By 1871 they were all in England - and did a great job of bringing up their descendants :)

Reply from North Mayo Heritage centre - In 1864 Swinford Union Workhouse was still 'open' but also had a hospital and 'maternity ward'.

A Charles Doherty died in the Swinford workhouse in 1883 and I believe this was my g-grandfather.  Do any records exist that would identify the next of kin so that I can confirm that it was the same man?  The death record on the North Mayo IFHF site lists his age, occupation, cause of death, and former residence but not enough information to positively tie him to my Dogherty/Doherty ancestors.
Thanks
