To seeya - can't seem to reply to your topic on McGilvrays in scotland but I have information on the McGilvrays - they are part of my tree. Ewan McGilvray Snr died 1 July 1905 he married Agnes Johnstone Rowan 30 June 1871. Some of the info you seem to have doesn't exactly jive with mine but would love to get in contact with you and sort it out. I have tons of info on McGilvrays.

Hi Marion - just spotted your message on McGilvrays in Scotland.
Would you happen to have anything on Mary McGilvray born 1829 to Alexander & Isabella McGilvray. Brothers and sisters - that I know of - Agnes b 1833,
Alexander b 1836, Helen b 1838, Janet b 1840, Robert b 1842. All born in Paisley as far as I know. Appreciate if you have any onfo. Thank you.

Hi there,
Unfortunately I don't have info on the Paisley McGilvrays only the Lanarkshire ones. There is a web site here:http://web.ncf.ca/cv297/scotcivil/scotcivil.htm which a gentleman has put together which gives all kinds of information on the McGilvrays in scotland including the ones in Paisley.
Kind Regards
Marion

My cousin Roy McGilvray has compiled a lot of info on the McGilvray Clan.
In her post, Marion gives his web address for civil info but the home page with x-refing can be found at web.ncf.ca/cv297/mcg-clan.html.
He has a wealth of information gathered during many research trips to Scotland. His email address is shown on the above site if you wish to contact him directly.

Hi Marion and Jan.
Many thanks for the link on the McGilvray's. I am just going to try it out now and see what I can come up with. Many thanks again.
-
I have McGilvray connections too.
My fathers mother was Alice Jane Clements McGilvray b. 26 Aug 1904 daughter of Thomas McGilvray and Sarah Alice Nugent m. 30 Jan 1903
Thomas father was Charles McGilvray b. circa 1855? who was married on 31 Mar 1876 to Sarah Ross
Charles was a Blacksmith and his father also Charles was married to a Janet Campbell date unknown.
Thats as much info I currently have on that line of the family. Hope it helps.

Where have you confirmed Charles' mother as a Campbell. From what I am seeing on entries, her surname was BOWIE...
Monica
-
Hi Monica
Thank you for that information.
I should have mentioned that Charles (Snr) was also listed on his son Charles 1876 wedding cert. as Blacksmith and that Janet was deceased by this time (1876). I would need to look at the 1871 census before I could be sure that this is the correct family. Thanks again for your time and assistance.

This is Charles Snr.'s line from what I am seeing www.mullgenealogy.co.uk/MullSearch.ASP?indv_no=12371
His brother Neil b. 24 MAY 1864 Milton looks to be living with him and wife Sarah in 1881, although on the transcript I am looking at he is showing as 'son' (you would have to check the original index for this on SP if you don't have it already). Charles and Sarah in 1881:
Charles McGilvray 28, blacksmith b. Glasgow
Sarah McGilvray 30 b. Glasgow
Thomas McGilvray 9 Month b. Glasgow
James Baird McGirty 2 b. Glasgow
Neil McGilvray 15, son Pappersmith (?spl.) b. Glasgow
Alexander McGilvray 45, lodger b. Aberdeen
Address: 14 Muirhead St, Partick, Lanarkshire
Monica
-
This looks to be Charles with parents in 1871 - as transcribed:
Charles B McGilvray 50 Labourer In Flone Mill, b. Isle of Mall, Argyllshire
Janet McGilvray 50 b. Islay, Argyllshire
Charles McGilvray 18, Labourer In Boot Yard b. Glasgow
James McGilvray 16, Labourer In Iron Foundry b. Glasgow
August (Angus?) McGilvray 13 b. Glasgow
Neil McGilvray 6 b, Glasgow
Address: 123 Garscube Road, Milton
The only Charles showing in his age group b. Glasgow

Hi Monica
From 1876 marriage cert of Charles parents listed as:-
Charles McGilvray
Blacksmith Jouneyman
and Janet McGilvray
m.s. Campbell deceased
George

A Janet Bowie/McGilvary (as indexed on SP) died in Milton in 1876, with a birth year of 1823 which would fit for your Charles' mother.
Monica
-
Sorry George, our posts crossed over.
Everything is pointing to Bowie for Janet :-\ I wonder if a mistake was made at the time of the marriage registration. Have you been able to check Charles' death entry? Going by that Mull link I gave earlier, his death is showing in 1916.
Monica

Hi folks - thanks your messages. It is my understanding that my Mcgilvray's came from the Renfrewshire area, but in saying that there could be a
connection with the above information somewhere. I am still searching and will come back if I find a link. In the meantime thanks for your interest and replies.

Yes this would tie in with the birth cert. I have of son Thomas b. 2 Jul 1880 the parents Charles and Sarah (Ross) and address are a match.
How do you manage to come up so quickly with this stuff? Its amazing! Thanks

The writing on the marriage cert is not the clearest but it definitely looks more like Campbell rather than Bowie lol??? I will have to check out the death cert. to be sure.

George
Why don't you email the lady who has put the McGilvray tree on Mull Genealogy and compare notes. Given she is showing Charles' death date, I would imagine she is descended from the line of Charles and Sarah.
Monica :)
-
Yes that is a line I could follow, thank you for your time and trouble.
I am fairly new to this so I did expect a few obstacles to get in the way but its all part of the learning process I guess.

Just had a look at Charles' death entry. The Mull tree is correct, his death shows on 21 November 1916. Sadly, his death was at the Barnhill Poorhouse and his death reported by the Governor. Sarah Ross was deceased by now.
Parents Charles, a ploughman, and mother Janet BOWIE.

Had a look at the 1916 death cert. of Charles McGilvray but I dont think he is the one I am after.
He had 3 marriages
1. Agnes Laird
2. Margaret McGilvray
3. Mary Buchanan
died aged 66 (birth year 1850) I think my Charles was more around 1855, and profession was Engine Fitter Journeyman not Blacksmith Journeyman
Back to the drawing board tomorrow lol.

It's a funny spelling for McGilvray : Charles MCGILLIVRAY in 1916
There are two entries - I also looked at the other one first ;D
Monica

I looked at SP and only came up with the one result as above

Checked out the death certificate of Janet McGilvray (spelt as McGilvary on the cert.) - no wonder I had trouble tracking stuff down with so many variations of the spelling lol.
She died aged 53 (b. 1823) on the 15 Jan 1876 wife of Charles McGilvary (sic) who is by now a Flour Mill Labourer and not a Blacksmith and interestingly enough her parents are listed as Duncan Bowie (Fisherman) and Janet Bowie (Brown) both deceased.
Still cant understand why the name Campbell appeared as her maiden name on her sons wedding certificate only 2 months later on 31 Mar 1876
