Title: Triangle / Ripponden area of Halifax
Post by: Malcolm Bull on Sunday 18 October 09 11:21 BST (UK)
Does anyone live in the Triangle / Sowerby / Ripponden area of Halifax?  Do you know whether the Roll of Honour which used to be inside the Triangle Pub is still there?  The UK National Inventory of War Memorials says

ACCORDING TO 1992 REPORT, PREVIOUS LANDLORD TOOK IT WITH HIM WHEN HE LEFT BUT IT WAS LATER RECOVERED AND RETURNED BY THE BREWERY

Can anyone throw any light on its current whereabouts?

Thanks in advance

Hi Malcolm,
If there is a local newspaper in that Triangle area maybe they could be persuaded to carry an item/run a campaign to locate it.

Or maybe the Returned Soldiers League[ don't know the name of their organisation in Britain] could get on its track.

Charlotte:

It may well be the case that the roll of honour has been re-instated in the pub.

I was rather hoping that some local genealogist might just pop in and have a look.

I could telephone the pub, but if someone lived in the area ...

hi phil  re triangle pub the roll of honour was built into the gable end of the pub but in recent times the gable end has been under attack from firstly a man who thought is wife was in the pub with another man tried to commit suicide and also kill his wife or companion set off at great speed and crashed the car into the gable end so it might have been badly damaged by that, then at a later date and not very long ago a wagon crashed into the gable end and it all had to be rebuilt, so it is possible that it didnt get put back. the wagon took out most of the corner of the gable and damaged the rest and you could see into the interior of the living area. the roll of honour was inbetween the two lower windows these had an arched top. the pub was shut for quite a long timeand the road was on a one way system,  it was then reopened but that didnt last long and as far as i know its still closed, i was only at the first house past the pub on monday as a friend had a plumbing problem and i went to sort him out, but never thought to look at the gable, have you tried the british legion for the area or lookek this weekend for any sign of wreaths? keith marsden,  have you seen derek latley

Heres Triangles War Memorial....If you look at the little sign to the left it states the original Roll is in the Triangle(pub) feel free to view. So i guess this is a modern War Memorial.

The pub is now closed and up for sale.

I think Malcolms original query was that, inside the pub there was, and no one seems to know if it's still there, the original memorial.

Thanks for going to all this trouble, Keith, it's much appreciated.  It looks like the roll of honour is still inside the pub.

Following earlier responses to this thread,  Christine sent me photos which she took of the external memorial.  You can see these on my Calderdale Companion website at

http://calderdalecompanion.co.uk/ph1269.html

and Emily sent me photos which she took of the memorial inside the pub in 2005.  You can see these at

Thanks to everyone who has responded

Hello Phil,  I have read with interest your message regarding the Triangle Inn, I also remember the car coming through the lounge wall of the pub as my grandad was the landlord at the time and had just finished playing the piano before the car came came through, he had a lucky escape.
My grandparants ran the pub in the 60,s and 70,s and I remember staying there for many school holidays when growing up.
I wonder if anybody in the village would remember Alice and Harry Collett and my dad Anthony and his sister Mary both joined the Royal Navy but came home to Triangle frequently ..

I have also read this story with great interest!! I grew up In Triangle. We lived opposite the Triangle and I remember Harry, Alice, Tony & mary well. I remember Marys lovely Long Blonde hair.

I could be wrong but didnt Mary or Tony have a daughter Called Caroline?

My Grandparents were Lillian & Arthur Whippey & My dad was Ian Whippey (Mr Whippey)

I also remember the crash very well in deed. It was Mr Thacker I believe!

My Grandparents (Now both past away) Were very good friends with Harry & Alice and I have very fond memories of them. Alice was a lovely lady and Harry a gentleman. I still remember exactly what they looked like. They both wore glasses and Harry was a broad man while Alice always looked pristine in her apprearance.

The "Best Landlord and Landlady" That ever graced The Triangle Inn. I don't remember a happier time in my life than when I lived in Triangle and our Sunday Lunchtimes being Ploughed with Coke and Crisps.

Such a shame that the pub has never really had "The traditional Landlord and Landlady since Harry & Alice
 Collett!!! :) :) :)

I also believe I may remember you. Would you be around 35 now? I mean Tonys Daughter?

It was nice to hear from someone who remembered my family, yes my grandad Harry always sat in the pub smoking his pipe, Tony and Mary did have a daughter called Caroline who went to university to study journalism. I am the daughter of Tony and Jean, we lived in Hull and my dad was in the navy up till I was 17. My school holidays were great spent in the pub with grandad giving me 5p,s for the juke box and they had a cleaner called Mrs Dunn who would take me to a park on the bus. I am 48 now and unfortunatly both my parents have now passed away, sadly we could not trace Mary to let her know. I know live just outside Middlesbrough and have often wondered about having a trip back to Triangle village to see if the pub was still there and how much its changed. I remember 1 regular who was in his 80,s Jack and my grandad would open the pub early in the morning so he could have a drink...
