Title: Mansell St Chorlton on Medlock c1940
Post by: figinsyrup on Sunday 18 October 09 10:04 BST (UK)
Hi

Could anyone tell me where Mansell Street is in Chorlton on Medlock circa 1940-1943.  I am particularly looking for infant schools close to Mansell Street.  The family were Catholic so I dont know if this is likely to make a difference to the school he attended.

Thanks

Take a look at this 1930s map http://www.artus-familyhistory.com/source/Early%20Maps.html/Manchester%20c.1930/Main%20Map.html
C-on-m  is shown bottom right, section 3C.

I am technically inept :-[
How can I enlarge these maps, so that I can see the street names?
Any advice? Words of one syllable, one step at a time, assume no previous knowledge!

Hello Orinoco

I had infact found the brilliant website you suggested but Mansell Street isn't shown.  I now know its near Rutland Street, Greek Street and Bedford Street, so with the aid of the maps can identify some of the local schools closeby to this area. Thank you very much for your help and replying to my request.  Much appreciated.

Hello Kooky

Just move your mouse pointer onto the map you want to look at and the pointer should turn into a hand,  click the mouse again to enlarge. I think you can do this a couple of times to enlarge it more.  You will then have to move the the slide bars at the bottom and right hand side of the screen to move around the map. Use the back arrow to get back to the original size and map. Good Luck

Re Mansell St

Bring up Orinoco's map and go to C2.

Go up Upper Brook St crossing over Grosvenor St, turn right into Mount St, you will come to a bend in the road.
Mansell Street is between the bend in the road and just above Bedlow St.

Mansell St is not showing on Orinoco's map, just a empty area, but it is on my 1960is A to Z.

That section of the map is yet to be updated. Many of the street names are barely legible. And, as you saw, some streets are missing completely.
My next job.
