Title: meehan family
Post by: anne jane on Thursday 06 May 04 22:57 BST (UK)
Looking for others researching the Meehan family from Enniskillan, County Fermanagh.

Their names were John Meehan, parents were John Meehan and Ann McLaughlin and Helen Meehan nee Burke whose parents were Owen Burke and Ann Gallagher.

John and Helen had at least 3 children who were Thomas, Ellen and William Meehan and they were all born in Enniskillan and they left there between 1892/97 to live in the Gorbals area of Glasgow.

Hi Janie

Sorry we haven't been able to help you so far on this one.

Have you made any progress,  or do you have any further details that could help someone to find what you are looking for?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

If some of the family was born post 1864, their births should have been registered. Why don't you search for them in the birth indexes? These are available at the GRO in Dublin and on film at your local family history centre. This would give you the parents and an address for further research.

1864-66 or so are in the IGI database at the familsearch website.

Don't know if it's of any help as i've not researched this branch of tree yet. I have a Mary Jane Meehan b.1860 father John Meehan (Labourer) mother unknown. Mary Jane Meehan married Thomas Slevin i believe in Tempo,Co.Fermanagh. They had 9 children. Mary Jane died 1909 in Co.Fermanagh. 1st son Patrick moved to Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1901. Remainder of children as far as i have assertained through census' remained in Co.Fermanagh. That's as much as i know about Meehan line.

As this line has recently been opened again,  it might be worthwhile pointing out that two early sources of information.  Most would recognise the GRIFFITHS VALUATIONS.  There are also partial records for an 1821 FERMANAGH Census.   search these phrases.

This is not my family line. I have looked at Meehans from Fermanagh, however, for several years now.  A John Meehan ( Mechan ) was enlisted in British military records in 1829 from Aghalurcher Fermanagh. This is several miles east of Enniskillen. John had a brother, named Dennis.  I have returned Meehan familes from several other areas in Fermanagh also, but have not kept records.

Census records do not return any Meehans in Enniskillen up to 1851, the Census before the 1901.   There is also ( a rather unfriendly ) births etc site at Rootsireland, which no longer allows you to identify births by County, until you pay.

A quick follow-up.  There are still Meehans living in Eniskillen at the 1901  Census.  There are 11 members in 2 or 3 familes. One is a butcher; two, possibly father and son, are car drivers,  but probably not automobiles.

Hi anne jane,
This probably has nothing to do with your Meehans but I thought, just in case, I should include it.
One of my Duffy's sisters married a John Meehan in Dublin in 1885. On the marriage certificate it lists the father as Cornelius Meehan, book keeper. On the 1901 census my ancestor's sister, Catherine, is listed as a widow.
It seems highly unlikely that this Meehan is related to your Meehans but as every little helps, if only to exclude, I thought I should send you the details.

I have just come across this request.  Here is a John Meehan registered in Enniskillen
Meehan, John
 County:FermanaghParish:Enniskillen
 Location:T/Enniskillen/Dame St.
I have had trouble with internet connection today, but got this from Re: Meehans in Co. Fermanagh (1848-1864) Griffith's
There was also a James in Enniskillen in the same list.
If I come across any more information, I may contact you again.
You mention an Irish genealogy site.  Nobody has replied RootsIreland, but it is difficult to use.
