Do you know what job he did,who he might have travelled with, where he came from in the UK(big place ;D) or who his parents were?
Was he single when he emigrated or married?
The more info we have the more chance we have of finding him for you.
I'm sure you can appreciate with a surname like Scott there are likely to be quite a few candidates ;)

Hi Carol
Thank you for your reply.
All my father knows about his dad is that, he was born in Scotland(midlothian area) and went to Australia about 1928-1930, he was a sandpit worker in scotland.
We found his mother last year unfortunately she passed away, and found out she worked in a poorhouse.( Mary boner Aitchison 1905-1983) as my father was fostered out the only thing we have really is his name Thomas Scott(Canbera austraila).
And as you have said there are hundreds of them, trying to narrow them down found one who was born 05/04/1906(so could be) father Robert James mother Marion Lawnie. thats as far as i've got PHEW!!
thank you

What is the connection between your Thomas Scott and Canberra, Australia - was it a last known address or something? Were your father's parents married - would Thomas have been able to legally marry in Australia? What sort of age could Thomas he - when was your father born?

Hi Wivenhoe
Thank you for your reply.
My grandfather Thomas Scott left Scotland and emigrated to Canberra Australia in 1928-1930. thats all we know of him.
No my father's parents weren't married, my father was fostered out when he was born.
We managed to get the sealed records for (name of mother/ father) all it said for father is Canberra Australia sandpit worker. not sure if he married in Austraila
My Dad thinks his father would have been born 1904/1906. nothing else i'm afraid.
and my dad was born 1928 in Scotland his name is Thomas Scott Aitchison
thank you

the dates are the Electoral Roll Registration years.
Leanne

They are from the A.C.T Electoral Rolls 1916 — 1967- so I would imagine the dates are the year that the names appear on the electoral roll ;)

I have had a look through the Electoral rolls that I have for Canberra and have found only one Thomas WB Scott who was a likely one - he lived for a time at 20 Westlake with his wife, Eileen and mother-in-law Mrs Leech. The couple were killed in a level crossing accident on 2.8.1945. Thomas was 39 and his wife 37 - they are buried in the Woden Cemetery in Canberra in the Methodist section. I had a look at 1928 which was the first electoral roll after WW1 and he is not there. But he could have been here and not regisitered - it wasn't compulsory at that time. He may also have been in nearby NSW - Queanbeyan and come to work here. The Great Depression started in Canberra after the opening of parliament in May 1927 and by 1920 many had left. Will keep an eye out for your Thomas - Ann

One more thing - the BDMs for NSW are on-line - the deaths I think go up to around the 1970s and the marriages quite late too - births on-line only until 1905 - however, Canberra which is the Australian Capital Territory - registered BDM in NSW until facilities became available and the various laws etc in place in 1930 - so go on line and check BDM for NSW - may help. Westlake was a suburb of Canberra set up for workers during the building and expansion of Canberra from about 1920s and no longer there.
Ann, may I ask where this accident was - I can't find deaths for that date in NSW or ACT - but only had a quick look so could have missed it.

Hi,
A Thomas William Scott is listed as dying in Canberra 31/12/1968.
No other details shown.
Sue
The couple were killed in a level crossing accident on 2.8.1945. Thomas was 39 and his wife 37 - they are buried in the Woden Cemetery in CANBERRANN reply#13
Just ADDING
The Cemetery details show the burials of these two people to be
5/8/1955 not 45
This would ALTER the calculated birth date and rule him out of Contention I think .

Hi Everybody
Gosh i'm overwelmed with the response thank you all so much.
I think the couple killed on the level crossing may not be him if the accident was 1955 and he was 39yrs of age which means he would have been born 1916 which is to late.
My dad thinks it would be around 1906 he was born and the only name had was Thomas Scott and the other was Thomas William Scott.
He think he emigrated 1928-1930 thats all we have i'm afraid
Thanks again

I lived at Westlake between 1941 and 1959. The site of my house is in Stirling Park, Yarralumla - I have transcribed the Woden Cemetery Burial register - this is where this information is available. I also heard the story many times about Eileen nee Leech. Her brother died a few years earlier - he dived into the Acton Pool (Molonglo River) - supposed to be bottomless - and hit his head - broke his neck and died. This is reported in the Canberra Times as well. I have put my main web page below that has a basic list of people buried in the Woden Cemetery between 1936 and up to and including some of early 1960s. The Cemeteries for the ACT are also on-line with less detail.
No 20 Westlake the site is near the fence of the American Embassy opposite where Darwin Avenue joins Perth Avenue. The site of the first twenty cottages is in the embassy area bounded by Darwin Ave Forster Cres and Empire Circuit. The sites of the remaining 41 cottages is in Striling Park and the old roads are still in situ.

At the top of this web on the home page is a link to Early Canberra which has articles from papers etc on early canberra and from memory - I put the story of the death under Westlake People in the Odds & Ends section -
I will not be able to reply to any queries for a few days - computer being made well. Ann
