Hi there - I went to the old St John's Graveyard (now in the Columba Club car park) today - it is in an extremely sorry state and very few readable or standing stones remain. Even since last winter, the graveyard has deteriorated terribly.
I hope no one minds but before they are disappear, I will jot down over the next couple of weeks what's still there - but many of the stones are worn away so apologies if the dates aren't 100%. If anyone recognises a mistake, please feel free to update my scribbles.

McArthur - Stone Now No Longer Visible – unable to locate it October 2009
In previous years it was lying broken towards the back of the grave-yard, hopefully some one will be able to fill in the blanks. This is an old photo. I am wondering if it is somehow connected to the Clark family (Paisley Mills) or Tower Rais. Tower Rais was once owned by the Clark family and I think the owner was married to a McArthur.
What I could make out:-
“Of your charity pray for the soul of
? (possibly John) McArthur
Merchant Paisley
Died 19th Mar ------------ (not sure as weeds had grown through the break in the stone)
James McArthur
Merchant Paisley
Died 14th June 1898 (or 1899) aged 88 years”
I tried to confirm the dates for James McArthur on SP, but alas I could not find a match, so if anyone thinks it is a different inscription, please update this.

The Broken and Unreadable:-
Unfortunately there are many stones now totally unreadable and broken in the old churchyard: but here are bits of stones which may help some one if they know what it should say. Please amend if anyone sees what the inscription is!

GOODWIN/HARVEY
Stone still standing but virtually unreadable – some of the legible words are:-
Ellen Harvey

I think on the top part of the stone there must be a death of a child recorded as there is reference to something and nine months.
**Scotlands People has a Helen Harvey other name Goodwin death in 1873 aged 43 years** It didn’t look like a 4 on the stone but it is in very poor condition.
