Hi there so far I have Margaret PURCELL born 17 August 1860 and her brother Patrick Joseph PURCELL born 5 October 1865.

Their parents are Patrick PURCELL and Cecilia WOOD

On Patrick’s birth image it has a Jane aged 3 and John deceased
I wonder if their births are under WOOD

I now have a record of Cecilia Wood arriving in Australia
Cecilia WOOD arrived aged 19 as an unassisted immigrant in 1857 on ship Roxburgh Castle
 http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=42

Both Margaret and Patrick died in New Zealand so I do not need help there as i have that info.

I am trying to work out what happened to Patrick PURCELL senior and Cecilia WOOD. I am not sure if they married or not. If they did not marry it just might have been one of those things they put on the registration for at the birth of both children

Not sure where to go next

				Hi Newbe,

do you have a year or thereabouts to indicate when Patrick Purcell born 1865 went to NZ (and umm perhaps with whom)...

 Cheers,  JM
-
about 1902/03 with his wife Miriam COLEMAN they married 1891 NSW
Have cert but his parents names are not on it

Soon after they arrived he changed his name to Joseph Henry SMITH and died 1941.  If he did not change his name I would not be a SMITH

This is from a newspaper in NZ but do not have the name of it

 VALEDICTORY
 MR. AND MRS J.H. SMITH
In the persons of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Smith, who are leaving to settle in Hikurangi, Awanui is losing citizens of twenty years standing. In February 1903 Mr. Smith arrived in Awanui with his wife and three children, coming here from Tasmania. At the time of their arrival the Kaitaia Butter Factory had not long been in existence.Mr.Smith was one of the first to start in the poultry business in the district, but after some years he was compelled to give up, the low prices of poultry and eggs rendering the business unremunerative.During his long residence in the district Mr. Smith has taken his fair share in local matters. He was a member of the Awanui School Committee, and was connected with various Agricultural Societies, etc, in the district. In this latter connection he was an exhibitor of poultry, flowers and vegetables, and has also judged for years in the same classes. In sport also Mr. Smith has taken an interest, and was a member of the Waipapkauri Racing Club. When the Court of Pride of Awanui, A.F.O., was opened Mr. Smith was one of the first to join, and went through all the Chairs, being twice C.R. Latterly he was Treasurer. As a foreman under the P.W.D. our departing friend was in charge of the Dalmatians on the river works, and also a ranger .With 13 years service inthe North Auckland Mounted Rifles as a Sergt, Mr Smith was one of the first to volunteer for service with that unit in the Great War, although he had to wait almost two years before he could away, he had spent 18 month's service at the front. Mrs. Smith will be missed in the district where for thirteen years she has given her services as a maternity nurse. No weather was too bad, no distance too great when her services were required. All in all Mr. and Mrs. Smith have been useful and respected citizens in the community, who can ill be spared. We wish them every success in their new home.

 FAREWELL SOCIAL AND DANCE
A farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, taking the form of a social and dance, was held in Even's Hall, Awanui. This was tendered by the public of the district and the local Forester's Lodge. There was a large attendance, and the affair went with a swing from start to finish. Dancing was indulged in with vim, and a nice supper was handed around .During the evening Mr. E.C. Matthews made a presentation to Mr. Smith of a solid leather suit case and a pair of military hair brushes in a case, and to Mrs. Smith a handsome E.P. tea set, the latter being from the ladies of the district. In making the presentation Mr. Matthews spoke in very eulogistic terms of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and described them as people whose departure would be a loss to the district. He wished them success in their new sphere. Mr. Geo. Cosson followed in similar terms, and spoke of Mr. Smith's connection with thr Forester's Lodge in Awanui. He touched also on Mrs. Smith's valuable service in the district .Mr. Smith responed for Mrs. Smith and himself in feeling terms. They regretted leaving the district where twenty years of their lives had been spent, but decided that a change would be a change would be advisable.

				Hi Newbe,

Most of it is on NSW State Records,

I will amend this post with the link

http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/quicksearch.aspx and key word Patrick Purcell, and then assisted immigrants etc

 JM

				Thanks JM,

Does it give any other info?  Or only what you posted

				Hi Newbe,

The details in reply #4 were the best .... but I am now trying to find when/where Pierce Purcell arrived too !

Pierce and Margaret PURCELL were of course in the 1850's parents to at least two adult lads, John and Patrick.... John arrived NSW in 1850 and was apparently still in the vicinity of Sydney (Surry Hills) when Patrick left Ireland as an assisted immigrant in 1854...

Here's hoping I can find the arrival of those lads parents... and that when I do, I can get as much detail as I found for Patrick's 1854 arrival.

 Cheers,  JM
-
				Bit More,

1856 Electoral Roll for East Bourke, Whittlesea, Victoria
there's a Pierce Purcell, leaseholder at Darebin Creek .... (I'm not familiar with that area, could be Dorobin or Darobin etc)

 Cheers,

 JM
-
				Thanks JM

you are one of the best ;D

 Newbe
-
Lets see if some one else can tell us more about the area as i know nothing either

 Newbe
-
And a bit more, although Not Really Sure

1851 Wales Census, Breconshire, and the District Barracks at Brecon...

Patrick Purcell, aged 21, a Private (not sure but read on)....  Ag Lab born Kilkenny Gisbeo

 Cheers,

 JM

-
OK - Shall keep that in mind

 Newbe
-
				Also,

I have NOT found Pierce Purcell arriving in Aust at all, but I'm a tad eye-sore... and not really that familiar with Vic records, and definitely not familiar with Welsh or Irish records... But there's Pierce Purchell of Kilkenny on the Irish Land Valuations records apparently...

 Cheers, Catch up later.

There is a digitsed will for Edward Baker of Bolinda, died 17 July, 1914.

Probate granted to Agnes Baker, widow and to Albert BAKER, Leslie Alexander BAKER, and William BAKER. An inventory of his property and money is included.

Legacies paid to Albert BAKER, Mary KELLY, John Stephen BAKER, William BAKER, James Edward BAKER, Leslie Alexander BAKER, (his children) and Agnes BAKER.

The papers include a letter from William BAKER, one of the executors who has some queries regarding rents etc collected by his stepmother, Mrs Agnes BAKER.  It rather leaves one with the impression that William was not best pleased with Agnes.

Have just received this the other day from gerryp66

Am a Purcell researcher (some 30 years) just recently joined Rootschat.
Noted your thread re Patrick Purcell & Cecilia Wood, Agnes McArthur and Mary Ann Shannahan.  Patrick was born Askeaton, Limerick, christened 26 Feb 1841 to parents James P. and Bridget MINITOR.

I have details of the descendants of Patrick P. and Mary Ann SHANNAHAN.
Also have Patrick's brothers as Thomas, James and David. Have their christening dates but nothing else at present.
I was previously unaware of his marriage to Agnes McARTHUR, their son James McArthur P. or of the two sons to Cecilia WOOD (John WOOD and Patrick Joseph P.).
Patrick and Cecilia had two daughters Margaret, b. 24Jul1858 (IGI) would appear to have died before 1860, and the Margaret born 17Aug1860 (VIC RGO 1860/19028) but IGI says17Aug1861 . May not be right as it appears that the first Margaret was born the same day Patrick and Cecilia got married (IGI is not always reliable) ??
My interests stem from a one name study of the PURCELLs of Australasia.  30 years part-time effort to date has resulted in a database of over 16,500 Purcells.  Still putting the jigsaw together.  Happy to share what I do have.

I have told him that Patrick and Cecilia never married. I am now wondering if Patrick had his mother right on the marriage certificate.  I am waiting for Gerry to get back to me at this stage. I never new he had brothers so more searching to do

				Hi There,

I finally got Agnes Baker death printout from BDM Victoria by downloading it and it says that James was alive but his age was not known. He would have been 62 when his mother Agnes died.  I have a feeling his parents may not show for his death. Have tried to search NSW and Queensland but no luck. Not able to search Victoria. I am at a loss as I have no idea if he was married or where he lived. Have found nothing in NZ so assume he stayed in Australia.

Any suggestions please would be great

 Thanks

				Hi There,

Yes it is the right woman but have not found a son by the name of John for her. I wonder if he is a step son. Have not found Richard's death  in WA so not sure where he died. Death notice confirms death on 25/11/1900

Richard and Cecilia married in 1873 Victoria.

This, her death notice, will at least confirm she is the right woman or not, if that is a help.

Thanks for Richard's one as I could not find it.  So does this mean they both died in SA and not WA. I am slightly confused on this

 Cheers

				Thanks for that Kris

The only John  birth I had was a John Wood in Victoria but and am sure it says on Patrick Joseph PURCELL's birth cert  1865 that John was dead. maybe the informant got that wrong.

What is the best way to find out where this John TUCKER was born.
Do I get the marriage or death cert for him. He would be my great grandfather's step brother or brother or something like that

Looks like John's death cert in Perth may not help either as no parents listed on it when looking online

Here you go with one of the births, Newbe.....

John WOOD, mother Cecilia WOOD, born in 1863 at LANC
 Ref = 3277

 Dee  :)

This is the birth Dee gave and is close to John's age at death.

I now have Patrick Purcell's death printout from BDM in New Zealand and it has James Purcell as his father but no mother on it.

I was looking at Margaret Purcell's birth record of 1860 and on it under previous issue it has one living that has not been found so not sure what to make of that.  If I get the one below for Leslie Alexander BAKER  of his birth will it have Agnes other son from her first marriage as previous issue.
