Post by: Aussiewen on Tuesday 08 March 05 05:07 GMT (UK)
I would really appreciate a look-up of any of these years in Northfleet.
I am looking for Joseph Pennell  born in Chelsea approx 1810 Middx. and wife Lucy born 1805 in Stoke Kent. They were married in 1829.
Any information would really be appreciated.

Hi Aussiewen, the only Lucy Pennell i could find that was near the 1 you were asking for is this one :

1871 census,   Northfleet Hill (Dove Yard),  Northfleet,  Kent.

She's a Widow and her place of birth is different to what you say.

Lucy Pennell   Head   64   Hundred of Hoo   Charwoman

Joseph Riley   Grandson-in-law   28   Springfield, Essex   Boot Maker

Elizabeth Riley   G.Dau   25   Northfleet, Kent

Lucy Riley   G.Dau   7   Rochford, Kent   Scholar

Clara Riley   G.Dau   6   Northfleet, Kent   Scholar

Frederick Riley   G.Son   2   Northfleet, Kent

Mary Ann Dadson   G.Dau   20   Northfleet, Kent   Dom. Serv   Unemployed.

Then i have her on the 1881 census, but her age is down as 81, and says N.K, Kent for place of birth...It is the same woman as 1871 census because again she's living with RILEY'S.

CAZ, Thankyou so much for the information in the 1871 census it is bang on, it fits in with the 1881 census nicely. Thanks for your trouble I know these things are not easily obtained.  If anybody out there has the 1861 or 51 census I would appreciate any information.
Thanks again Caz.

The index at www.1837online.com gives this family, which looks like it could be yours.

PENNETT, Elizabeth 15 F North Aylesford
PENNETT, Joseph 54 M North Aylesford
PENNETT, Lucy E 57 F North Aylesford

I can't recall what the minimum spend is on that site, so maybe you could get the ref & image once you have some more people to look up.

The 1851 Kent, so far as I know has yet to be published on CD, so you may do best ordering it on film if you can. The nationarchives site gives this Census piece number:

Thankyou Pauline, this is the family, isn't it amazing how the names places and ages change each time with different enumerators etc. they have been Pennell, Penner, and now Pennett.
So thanks once again I really appreciated your help.

Hi Aussiewen,
Here's the full entry from the 1861 census:
ref RG9 472 folio 83: Dove Yard, Northfleet
Joseph Pennell head mar age 54 brickmaker born Surrey Kennington
Lucy E do wife mar age 57 born Kent Hoo
Elizabeth do dau age 15 ag lab born Northfleet

I'm not sure if it's this Elizabeth that marries Joseph Riley, as this entry definitely says daughter for relationship, and Elizabeth on the 1871 is granddaughter, but the ages tally.
xx Carol

Here's the entry from the 1851 census:
ref HO107 1609a folio 46: Bow Street, Northfleet
Joseph Pennell head mar age 41 labourer born Chelsea, Middx
Lucy do wife mar age 47 charwoman born Cliffe, Kent
Thomas Alder scholar age 11 born Northfleet
Elizabeth Pennell grandchild age 5 born Northfleet

So Elizabeth has reverted to grand daughter on this census, and neither Joseph or Lucy can make thier mind up as to where they were born.
I wish you luck with this family
xx Carol.

I rented a film a while back to find the birth of my ancestor William Pennell who was born in Northfleet in 1829.  I noted the Pennell parents I found in the film and think they may all be related somehow, possibly.

William was the son of Thomas Pennell and Eliza Vost.  Thomas is the son of Charles and Mary and was born in Hammersmith.  Pennell parents I found in the film were:

Thomas & Eliza
John & Elizabeth
Charles & Ann
Richard & Francis Ann
Joseph & Lucy--yours
Charles & Elizabeth
Edward & Ann

I should have recorded the children's information, but was new to this at the time and didn't do that.  Do you know the name of Joseph's parents?  He could be a brother to my Thomas.

I was given the following info. I haven't connected it to my Pennells (Thomas Pennell and Eliza Vost) yet.
John Pennell b c1817 possibly Westminster(info from 1851 census apparently). Married Elizabeth Williams of Northfleet. Children:
John 1834 Northfleet
Elizabeth 1836 Northfleet
Sarah 1838 Northfleet
Ann 1841 Shoreditch
Harriet Caroline 1845 "
William James 1847 "
Edward 1849 " (married Caroline Elizabeth Johnson)
Mary Ann 1851"

James and Elizabeth may be the James and Elizabeth from your "Pennell Parents"

I was given a list of the baptismal records of the Pennells in Northfleet from 1820's to 1870's.  Joseph and Lucy had only one child listed.  That was Jane 4 April 1829.   Then there is a later listing for Elizabeth (listed as both daughter and granddaughter of Joseph and Lucy) 19 July 1846, dau of Jane (illegitimate).  So that seems to be how Elizabeth fits into this family.  Maybe raised by the grandparents.

There is also discussion about Joseph's birth place.  One is listed as Kennington, Surrey I believe.  Two of the Pennell men in the list I got were Richard married to Frances and Charles married to Ann.  I checked for them in census and they are both listed as being born in Kensington, one in 1812  the other in 1813.  Wonder, if when asked that question, the census taker misunderstood and his should also read Kensington, Middlesex???

I am trying to put this family together from the records I have.  I know the father of Thomas Pennell is Charles, mother Mary listed as Pinnell in Thomas' baptismal record in Hammersmith.  From the naming patterns they used I believe that my Thomas, this Richard and Charles are brothers.  Possibly Joseph is also a brother.  There was also a John born about 1817 at Westminster who may be a brother.  He used many of the same names.

If anybody is interested I would post the information I got for this family.  Maybe together we can figure out who goes with whom.

Let me know

Claire

:)Hi Claire;  Just checking in to see if you have had any luck with the Pennell family tree research (especially any ties between your Charles and my Joseph Pennell)?  I really haven't had much luck with the registers in the Kent, Kensington, Northfleet area. :(
