Once you've told us who you are hoping to find and where, can you let us know what sort of information you would like help with: births, marriages and deaths, census.

We are unable to help find living people due to privacy issues.

No, the info isn't 'free' it's on a subscription site.

Do you have an actual death date for Simon?

Have you managed to find Robert and Sarah in the censuses from 1851 onwards?

Hi

It depends what sort of records you want to search. If you visit The National Archives then searching records there is free. The National Archives has a vast amount of records, a small amount of which are accessible on the internet. To view any of the records, not just the indexes does cost.

Have you any reason to believe Robert's father ever came to London?

1851 census HO107 1526 folio 16
Duke Street St Bartholomew the Great City of London
Robert Sandford 25 Head Married Norfolk
Sarah Sandford 19 Wife Married London

On the 1871 census Robert states his birthplace as Saxham Suffolk (confirmed by the 1891 census in Southchurch Essex) his age as 46, and his occupation as a sewing machine maker.

There are two places called Saxham in Suffolk - Great or Little Saxham. Great Saxham has coverage for the period you are interested in on the IGI, Little Saxham doesn't.

There is no death registration for a Simon Sandford in the civil registration starting 1st July 1837.

There is this Prerogative Court of Canterbury will (at The National Archives) for a Simon Sandford in Suffolk but not a brewer. He might have a connection or he might not.

Will of Simon Sandford, Farmer of East Bergholt, Suffolk
Date 04 June 1832
Catalogue reference PROB 11/1801

8th January 1832 St Mary East Bergholt
Simon Samford? aged 85

Hi

What information did the PCC will give or was there no connection? There may be none - there is about 30 miles between East Bergholt and Little Saxham.

There doesn't seem any evidence either way to say whether Robert came on his own to London or he came with any other family members. For his baptism and birth in Suffolk you really need to put a query on the Suffolk board as the Rootchatters there will know more about the county than on the London and Middlesex board.

Hi

Have you been able to eliminate the Simon Sandford who died in 1832 as a possible relative - a grandfather for instance?

Hi  Valda,

I found out a bit of information about this Simon and it could be him the last child he had was born in about 1828, do you have any further information about him I could use?, I know that the mother of Robert Sandford was definately Sarah because its in the 1841 census,

best regards, Gwen

Hi

Can you give the full information from the 1841 census information you have for Robert.

As far as I can tell Simon Sandford who died in 1832 aged 85 last known child was born circa 1791, but he supposedly did have a son called Simon in circa 1781.

East Bergholt parish registers are not on the IGI which doesn't have particularly good coverage for Norfolk.

Hi, thanks

In 1841 Robert lived in Clerkenwell in London, with his wife Sarah Louise Jaycocks comes from Suffolk, living with him were William circa 1763 and Elizabeth circa 1783. I have found some information on another tree which says the same as you about Simon 1791

regards

Gwen

Hi

The Robert in Clerkenwell on the 1841 census is older than your Robert

1841 census HO107 662/3 folio 42
Hermes Street Clerkenwell Middlesex
William Sandford 78 Schoolm(aster) not born Middlesex
Elizabeth Sandford 58 born Middlesex
Charles Sandford 25 Warehouseman born Middlesex
Robert Sandford 20 ap(pprentice) born Middlesex
Maria Sandford 22 teacher born Middlesex

Adult ages, those over 15 on the 1841 census are usually rounded down to the nearest 5 so this Robert would be aged anywhere between 20 and 24 with a birth between 1817- 1821.

Your Robert's age was consistent on all censuses from 1851 onwards birth year circa 1826.

If Robert's sister was Maria (and no relationships are given on the 1841 census and the born in or out of county can be inaccurate) she married in 1843 at St James Clerkenwell. She gave her address as 24 Hermes Street and her father's name as William Sandford occupation school master.

There is a Robert Sandford born circa 1822 St George Hanover Square on the 1871 census a widower and labourer.

What information does the Simon Sandford PCC will give?

Valda
