Joseph Hope Lowery or (Hope-Lowery) was born in or around Sth Wingate in 1877. (according to his marriage certificate)
His parents were Robert Hope Lowery and Fanny Johnston
They had 2 other children that we know of Ruth and May. birthdates unknown.
We know that Joseph migrated to Australia when he was 19yrs old, c1896.
I am trying to find any information that would confirm the surname as either Hope-Lowery or just plain Lowery. (maybe Hope was a second name?)
Nowadays in Australia, the surname is simply Hope. Any information or advice concerning this family would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

Hi Lyn
Welcome to RootsChat. Entry in BMD shows Joseph Lowery 1878 Mar Q Easington 10a 439.
No sign of the name Hope in the census returns.
Looks like the name Hope was adopted.

1891 Census index has the Family as Lowery.
RG124110/68/14
Robert Lowery 38
Fanny Lowery 42
Mary G Lowery 15 (1881 census as age 5)
Joseph Lowery 3 (1881 census as age 3)
Doraller G Lowery 10 (1881 census as age 7 months)
Margaret Lowery 4
Unfortunately on Ancestry the link to the image is incorrect and I couldn't locate the correct image, so I cannot confirm.
There is on FreeBMW a Birth Reg for Joseph LOWERY Mar 1878 Easington 10a 439.
This may be him.
It is Mar Q not Dec Q as Gary posted

1891 census image shows a couple of differences to the transcript
Joseph's age is 13 and not 3
Doraller image looks like Dorathey G

Hi Mick
Sorry about the wrong birth Q.

np Gary,
I thought there was a good possibility that his age was wrong on the 1891 index I saw. Thanks for checking.
I've seen nothing to indicate where HOPE came from.

Wow! Thank you so much Gary and Mick. I had no idea I would get a response so quickly! This definitely looks like the correct family.
I do suspect that the Hope was a second name (possibly the surname of a g mother which was passed along?)
I noticed on the 1841 census, there were Hopes living in Seaham Harbour which I believe is just a few miles away? Maybe that's a lead worth following?
Mary is no doubt the 'May' that we had heard about.
Thanks again for your help, it's much appreciated. Lyn

Thanks Mick
Can't pin down Ruth & May. They don't show in the census upto 1901.
There is a birth for May in 1907 in Houghton.
and a birth for Ruth in 1881 in Chester-Le-Street?

Welcome to rootschat Lyn
In case you don't have this, FreeBMD has most Births, Marriages and Deaths from 1837 for England. This is a index only.

Gary
There is also a death for Ruth 1881 Jun Q.
May may be Mary Gill Birth Reg 1875.
I looked for and didn't locate the marriage for Robert and Fanny.

Thanks for the welcome, Mick.
I've been lurking off and on for a while but never posted before today. I'll definitely take a look at that link for future look ups.
Yes, I think you are right about Mary/May being one and the same.
Joseph's family live in and around Gateshead, Newcastle in NSW. An area whose main industry is mining, so the family didn't move far from their roots despite being across the world.

Marriage 1874 June ¼ Stockton 10a 195 has Robert Lowery and Fanny Johnston on the same page.
