Title: Evelyn FARRANT 1846
Post by: Carole Bloomfield on Friday 09 October 09 16:15 BST (UK)
I am trying to find the birth record of my G.Grandmother, Evelyn Farrant.

She married William Gibbs butn I don't know when.

According to the 1881 census she was born at Knackers Knowle Devon, her age being 35 on the census would make her DOB c1846. I don't think this place exists any more, but I couldn't be sure.

I would love to know if she had any siblings but without this record I am stuck. Can anyone help me please, I would be more than greatful
Regards
Carole

Sorry I forgot to mention she married William Gibb but I don't know when.

They had 14 children the eldest was born in 1867 so maybe they were married c 1866

Hi,

This could be them (found on FreeBMD):

Marriages:

Evelyn Farrant   SepQ  1866   Greenwich  1d  1122

Possible spouse:  Williams Gibbs

A copy of the cert should show the name and occupation of her father which might help to find her on the census.

Hi Roycar,

According to Genuki, part of Knackers Knowle was incorporated into Egg Buckland.

See this link:-  http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/EggBuckland/index.html

Thankyou Jan
I did post another message when I realised I had left off the marriage. She did marry William Gibb but I hadn't a record of it. You look as though you have found it. I am very greatful

And thank you Bob I will investigate further.

This appears to be  the marriage

Marriages Sep 1866

 Evelyn Farrant     Greenwich    1d   1122
 William T   GIBBS      Greenwich    1d   1122

Greenwich seems odd though

Do you know her parents or is that what your after? (her birth cert would confirm this)

Hi Judi
Thanks for your interest. The marriage is correct. They moved about, probably because he was a soldier. There eldest children were born in Burma. I don't know if he was a soldier when they were married.
It is Evelyn I need info on. I will send for her birth certificate hoping the info you gave me is the right one, but it certainly looks that way.
I would like to trace her family back if possible.
It might be a good idea for me to send for the wedding cert as well.
Thanks again
Regards
Carole

If you go to http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl and select 1861 and enter Evelyn's name - you will find that her parents were Henry & Jane. Siblings were Amelia & Ophelia. All were living at Knackers Knowle, Egg Buckland.

The 1851 census shows them also living at Knackers Knowle, with sons Edwin 6, and David 2. Also living there is Henry's mother Mary aged 76 from Honiton Clist.

Henry FARRANT married Jane FOWLER September qtr 1840, Stoke Damerel district vol 9 page 466.

Jane FOWLER was baptised at Tamerton Foliot 8 Jun 1817, dau of  James & Mary.

Are you changing the census date in the drop down box to 1861?

Yes.
I eventually got the 1861 census but now I can't get the 1851 census. I have tried different members of the family and the same thing happens. I asked a relative to try and the exact thing happened to her so we wondered if searches were limited.

Oh well, that sorted that problem then!
Thanks
Because you mentioned the 1851 census I presumed that is where you got it from. Sorry.

Thanks again, Trish.
I have sent for Henry and Jane's marriage certificate hoping it gives his father's name so that I might find a marriage for his parents. I have no idea of his mother's maiden name. I will not get much further without it.

Excellent Carole ;D
Get back tothis thread when you get it.
Hopefully his father is Robert. I may have found something but only with that name as his Father.

Cheers,
Trish

After all your work, I will definitely keep you up to date!
I haven't been able to find a birth record for Henry only one at Hemyock,Devon, with father Robert and mother Mary, but I am not sure it is the right one. Is that the one you have found?

Carole

Yes Carole that is the one.
But even if it is not him once you have a Fathers name and occp. you can request a Parish Record look-up.
There are also possible marriages  to Mary Lutley or Mary Blackmore for Robert.
I will talk to you again when you post the Cert details.

Trish :)

Hello again.
I have the marriage cert of Henry Farrant and Jane Fowler!!

Unfortunately the father isn't who we thought. He is John Farrant, labourer.

Jane's father is James Fowler farmer.

The witnesses don't give any clues either!!
The address for both of them is give as 7 James Street.
Now I am going tostart all over again!

Dont be disillusioned. It is good news really as we can find them in Censuses and work from there.

DOB7 at least was correct with Janes parents, James and Mary, and you have her christening ;)
We also possibly know Henrys Mother is a Mary and his Father is definitely John.
All is not lost.

Hi Carole,
You wont find Father John on 1841.
He is probably dead by then. Remember Henrys Mother Mary is next door in 1841 and living with them in 1851. So John probably died within a very short timeframe 1840/1841.

Is he recorded as deceased on Marriage Cert.?
What are the witnesses names?

Trish

Hi Trish
Of course! Silly me, put it down to my age!!
He isn't down as deceased on the marriage cert so you are right he must have died 1840/1841. I did try to find a death record but no luck.
The witnesses are George Kettle? and Grace Ager. the writing is so flowery it is difficult to read. It could be Grace Myer.
