-
Hi angel,
I'd like to add myself and oh if it's not to late :)
I served a 5 year apprenticeship in Gooch Street North and it was my job to walk up Hurst Street to the sandwich bar every lunchtime, this was during the early 70's and the area was pretty run down then, it would be nice to see how the area's changed, bet i wouldn't recognize it now.
We're only 20 mins by train from Brum but neither of us are NT members.
best wishes,Tony
-
Would love to do this as some of my family lived in the back to backs.
Can you put me down as a possible and I will confirm nearer the time? Will have to sort out travel from London area.
I'm not an NT member.

Wow guys am overwhelmed at the response all noted thanks looking forward to meeting you all still awaiting a telephone call re group visit and discount I really can't wait x

Still hoping to come, and I'm not a NT member ...

Hi all
please can you confirm if you haven't already done so that you can make it and whether or not your an National Trust member
also its been suggested we try Pizza Express any objections let me know here's a link thanks x
http://www.pizzaexpress.com/
-
Hi I'm not near Birmingham, but hope you have a good meet.
I'd just like to say that if you go to Pizza Express I can highly recommend the Caffe Reale as a desert to die for - Baby figs in a cinnamon and white wine spiced syrup with a dollop of mascarpone.
Jan
-
thank you for your kind words Mel x
-
Hi all,
I finally managed to get in touch with the back-to-back houses and there has been a problem with the booking I had it pencilled in early December and the manager was meant to ring with the comfirmation. I spoke to them today they could not offer the whole group a tour together, but could offer tours for 6-8 people during the course of the day which we didn't want so ......................... onto plan b Birmingham has a wonderful tour bus which starts at around £10 per person they do a tour stop for a cuppa tour some more then lunch (not included in price) then they take you on to somewhere ie Aston Hall then bring you back to the city ~ perfect! except it doesn't start til April so maybe worth a summer meet!
The problem i have now is what do we do visit a museum ie thinktank or the art gallery, visit the records office or just find a nice pub when we can eat and have time for chatting ...................... any ideas at this point would be useful thanx Mel x
-
This is what's on at the Birmingham Museum if anyone is interested...... http://www.bmag.org.uk/events
There is also the Jewellery Quarter Museum but max tour size is 18.
http://www.bmag.org.uk/museum-of-the-jewellery-quarter
Mel we'll work it all out I'm sure..... Thanks for doing all this to make it work.
Claire x
-
Hi Claire,
Thanx am a little out of ideas a museum may be a good idea or my friend suggested a canal baot trip then come bk for a meal will all come together I am sure x
Mel x
-
There's the sea life centre.........
-
I thought about that earlier cos Im sure we can get a cup of tea in there x
-
Hiya a suggestion as been put forward by a good friend for us to visit the Cathedral
http://www.birminghamcathedral.com/index.asp?idarea=1&idareasub=1
its free has a lot to look at as well as a tour and a tea room
let me know what yu all think thanx Mel x
-
I've lived in Brum all my life. ;)
The Cathedral idea is a good one. I also would recommend Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. The Pre-Raphaelite paintings are well worth viewing. I can go and look at them time and time again. The canal boat trip would be a laugh especially if the weather is fine. It's a pity about the bus trip, that would have been a marvellous idea.
There are several historic spots in Birmingham but rather spread out. I have never been to Soho House, the home of Matthew Boulton, which could be another possibility. "Unfortunately the location does not make it easily accessible to visitors without transport and the area is rather intimidating ..." says a reviewer. What a pity! The Jewellery Quarter also is a short distance from the City Centre which could prove difficult. Carl Chinn was on TV earlier this week talking about the Pen Museum located in the Jewellery Quarter, which proved a very interesting topic.
I visited the Records Office in Birmingham Central Library yesterday and do not think they could cope with a large number of enthusiastic genealogists at one time. ;D
However, there are a great number of eating possibilities in the central area. The museum itself has a rather pleasant "Victorian Restaurant".
Don't be down-hearted "Angel-Eyes" something positive will turn up.
Judy
-
How does it sound if we went to the Catherdral (which is free), then had a cuppa in tea room toddled off to Museum (I will try to book table for lunch then we attempted to get a boat trip?
will do a summer meet and book the bus x
-
I'm with you all the way. 8)
Judy
-
Me and 'Im Indoors will go with the flow, as they say... looking forward to meeting everyone
-
Did you know you can tour the BBC studios in the Mailbox..just a thought for Archers fans.
jim
-
Mel
From previous experience. Go for two things one morning with a cuppa and one afternoon with cuppa and lunchspot in between. Cos when we all get together and get yakking time ticks. And we'll always find a tea room - lol Rootschatters can find a tea room no probs!
Somewhere warm and dry (but with cafe) and interesting is where you need to head. Don't try and do too much in same day - It's not a one off we will come back again!
Best wishes
Ann xxxx
PS remember name badges! and contact nos for those coming so if they can;t come last minute they can get in touch with you and not hold group up - PM with your moby to those coming?
-
Thanks Ann am completely all at sea with all the hospital stuff. Im going to Brum on Saturday to see the proximity of Cathedral to Museum ~ cathedral has a coffee shop and then move on to museum it has a victorian resturant so will try and book that or it will be on to a pub lol that takes us to lunch I thought we could catch a boat trip and then end up in a cafe those who dont want to go to any of these places can go get a coffee and meet up later ~ am planning a summer one with open top bus tour will post it soon as weather improves x
questions:
what time do you usually meet?
name badges ~ do I just get a load and complete them as people arrive?
phone numbers ~ can I get these in advance?
Do you usually book a meal for friday night for those staying over?
A very panicky Mel x
-
on reflection though Im not sure if boat trip will be running this early so shall we say Catheral in morning go for a cuppa the go to lunch either restrunant in museum of pub then look in the museum ~ as a note Im sure these are both free I will email both places in advance then we can find a cafe or pub ~ ooooooooooh so much to think about x
-
name badges ~ do I just get a load and complete them as people arrive?
Mel, they can all make their own badges - less for you to do :)

The distance between the museum & Cathedral is no more than a 5 min. walk along Colmore Row.
jim
-
Thank you Jim thats v useful M x
-
Mel
deep breath! You'll be fine!
We usually meet about 10 - 10.30 (gives those who do daily travel time to get there).
Name badges - Normally the organiser provides unless peeps have them already from previous ones BUT they are not something you must do cos we all find each other no matter what and get stuck in. We've survived plenty of these without so no need for anyone to make them if they don't want to.
Phone nos - You don;t need ours but is a MUST that peeps have yours so that if they can't make it they can ring you and let you know and if a change of plan - say someone only turning up in afternoon and we're late as happens - you can let them know (in that case get their no!)
Friday night - it varies. I've done both. Depends on what folks want to do. However as you have loads going on at home and is the first one you've done (and are doing a brill job btw!)I'd leave folks to sort themselves out Friday and you just book Saturday. (Phone no essential for this! in case of no shows). Folks travelling will arrive all different times so hard to book it Friday - don't is my very best advice.
And relax ! I know it's a bit stressful but all will be well on the day and we want you to enjoy it too! Never been to one yet that hasn't been a grand day out.
Ann xxxxx
-
Thanks Ann can work from that now can see the wood for the trees as it were x
-
You are doing just fine. The Cathedral and Museum are good bets. I hope someone is playing the organ that day.
On a rather damper note, I've just found out that it's half-term week and we are entertaining the grandchildren that week. I hope to have returned them to their parents by Saturday but you never know !
Obviously, I will keep you informed of my whereabouts.
Judy
-
I've lost track of this as I've been telephone and internet-less for almost a month :( ... am on a friends at the moment.
Someone please put a brief resume up of
1 date
2 place to meet
3 time
to save me wading through the whole thread ! I'll be coming on the train from Hereford ... need to find train times, so need to know what time we are meeting !
I don't need a name badge ... I'm the old one with the striped socks ! ;D ;D ;D
Must dash ... friend wants to use laptop !
-
Hi Lydart we ar meeting outside/nside (if wet) the Cathedral between 10.15 - 10.30 am will pm my mobile number to yu just before in case yu running late its saturday 20th Feb hope thats ok Mel x
-
Wish I could come! Please post pics. :D
-
How far is it from the station to the cathedral please ?
And is there only one station in B'ham ? 40 years since I was last there !!
-
Im going into Birmingham tomorrow I will be able to answer how far lol when I get home. As for Stations I know of three New Street which is the main one and Moor Streetwhich I used only once to get to Marylebone and Snowhill which I think is more for local journeys x
-
I guess the trains from Hereford go to New Street ... I'll find out times, but need to know how far from the station to the cathedral ... walk ? bus ??
-
Walk..10 mins. tops.
jim
-
OK ... thanks !
I'll google for a map of central B'ham and print it out ...
-
defo walk no take buses lol Jim is right its around 10 minutes providing you head off in right direction :~))))
-
Hi All,
Lydart, according to thetrainline.com you can travel to either New Street or Moor Street from Hereford
Hereford 07.40 - New Street 09.11
" 08.40 - " " 10.11
" 07.40 - Moor Street 09.28
" 08.40 - " " 10.28
cost on both £13.20 off peak day return
there's really no difference in distance from either to St Martin's though New Street can be a bit manic at times where as Moor Street is quite a nice restored GWR station (think it's possible to see St Martin's from Moor Street but not from New Street.
looking forward to meeting everyone :)
best wishes, Tony
-
Heck, that means I'll have to leave home before seven ... :o :o :o :o
Its about 50 mins drive to Hereford, and I'll have to leave time to park ...
-
here you go.
-
Jim you are a star x
-
Hi everyone,
I have just got back from a very long, exhausting trek around Birmingham which I dragged my 12 year old along with me ;D ;D We went over to look at the Cathedral (St. Philips) and to be honest it really wasnt the place to be meeting up as rather small although well worth a visit if you are arriving on Friday and wish for something to do ~ its a lovley, peaceful place and there is a very small fairtrade cafe (£1 for 2 coffee and biscuits)
So, to plan E lol
we went off over to the Art Gallery and museum which is a straight rd from New Street station and I must say we were both very impressed it is a lovely, calm atmostsphere and theres a lovely Edwardian cafe ~ not quite right for lunch, but very clean and very nice if a little on the pricey side ~ perfect to drop into for a cuppa x they house a wide variety of artifacts I don't think we will get round in the time allocated, but something for everyone. The main gallery is located on the first floor (2 flights of stairs) - there is a lift but I failed to locate it - at the top of these stairs is the mens loos and the ladies is in the corner of the gift shop (very easy to miss as I did twice lol ) the ladies were very clean I didnt get chance to look at the mens ;) so we will take for granted they ok
We then toddled off down Broad Street to Brindley place
-
this took us between 10 - 15 minutes but we didn't stop to look at the sites ;D we took a steady walk along the canals and found the Malt House who have pencilled us in for 1 pm I have to ring in around half an hour to confirm the booking its pencilled in for 30 people please could everyone who is coming along pm me so I can do the following:
a) work out correct numbers
b) give you my phone number
c) find out who needs a badge making (which is possibly going to to be a sticker cos Im scared of pins ;D)
d) for anything I have missed out
there is also a boat trip available along the canal I did not book this as I thought those who wanted to go will go at their own leisure
Thanx Mel x
ps will post full itinary later tonite x
-
Final Itinary for Saturday 20th February 2010
Meeting at 10.15am at Birmingham museum and Art Gallery (I will be there from 10 am in front Foyer in case of early arrivals)
Address for Museum and Art Gallery ~ Chamberlain Square
I will remain in front Foyer till 10.30 am all late arrivals can contact me or you should be able to find group easily in the museum (I'm wondering if we should start with a cuppa for those travelling if so we will be in the cafe by 10.30 am)
Then we can stay in Gallery till 12.00 pm for those less energetic or just wanting to chat the cafe is located just past the gift shop
If we get seperated we will meet between 12.00 pm and 12.15 pm in the main foyer
The table is booked for 1pm at the Malt House along the canal off Brindley Place and the manageress has confirmed booking under the name Cash for 30 people she tells me they will be busy and a smaller menu as a sports event at NIA but still plenty of vareity I managed to "lift" a menu while I was there earlier lol x
-
Heck, that means I'll have to leave home before seven ... :o :o :o :o
Its about 50 mins drive to Hereford, and I'll have to leave time to park ...
hHi lydart, and parking at hereford station will cost you an arm and three legs £7 I believe, mind in town its £3-£4 and 10mins walk away.
Oh I forgot to say hello and welcome back
Mazi's oh
-
:) :)
Hi lydart, is abergavenny any easier?
leave 8-00 change hereford 15 mins wait, arrive new st 10-11.
semms to be trains back afternoon early evening ok. eg leave 17-12 arrive a'y 19=28
from "national rail enquiries" fare looks to be £18-80 return
Mazi oh
-
Abergavenny is nearer, but very little parking, and I dont want to risk not being able to find any on street parking ... son lives in Hereford, about 10 mins walk from station, and I can park at his ! (For free !)
-
I've more or less sorted out the 'getting there' bit, OH is dropping me off at Lichfield so I can catch the train into New Street station. I hope its easy to find the Art Gallery as OH normally navigates me around Birmingham - this will be my first 'solo' outing ;D
Now for the return journey - what time is everyone thinking of heading home, just so I can sort what time train to catch and arrange for OH to pick me up.
Looking forward to seeing everyone.

I hope to come on the next one - open-topped bus, back-to-backs, canal trip or any combination of these.
Have fun on Saturday, hope the weather stays fine for you all.
Love Judy x
P.S. .......and I still haven't got to meet that dear Floozie with the Striped Socks again!
-
Awww Judy sorry to hear it will keep yu informed Mel x

HI MY FRIENDS .

MM
-
we sure will MM x
-
A challenge!
Near the Cathedral is the tombstone of, I think, the smallest woman and/or a speaker of the Cornish language. I have my facts mixed up here but I am sure you will find what I mean. try and take a photo please.
Judy
-
I thought that was ?? Dolly Poltreath ?? and she lived and died in Penzance ?
And are we going to be tactful about photo's ? I for one don't want my photo put up on RootsChat ! Photo's of me 40 years ago are fine (see the YTG threads !) - its the current ones I don't want seen !
-
And are we going to be tactful about photo's ? I for one don't want my photo put up on RootsChat ! Photo's of me 40 years ago are fine (see the YTG threads !) - its the current ones I don't want seen !
But you never said and I put the Hereford photo on! :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[
-
Dont worry ... its long gone into the mists of time !
But with a larger group of us in Brum ... who knows ! I thought it was good to voice an opinion before we met up !!
-
you are right no-one should have their photos put up without permission being granted first x
-
However ... I think the jacuzzi floozi might not mind a few pics of her !!
-
You were correct, Lydart, as usual! ::) I had seen Dolly Poltreath's memorial in Paul Churchyard, near Mousehole, some years ago and had become totally confused.
There is a little headstone near Birmingham Cathedral for a woman who died with a height of only 33 inches which must have been fairly unusual in the early 1800s.
During my researches I have just found out that there are 4 windows by Burne Jones in the Cathedral which must be wonderful to behold. Maybe there will be some photos taken if photography is actually allowed there.
End of Day 2 Grandparenting! They are asleep at last - little dears! Phew! There isn't a yawning Smilie.
J
-
No-one has been on here for several days !
Hmmmm .... hope its still on as I'm getting to B'ham New Street at 10.11 a.m. !
Will belt along to the Museum, hoping ...
... striped socks all ready and waiting !
-
Hi Lydart :)

i messaged Angel earlier today and she said she'd be there by 10.00 am which is about the same time i should get there.

Hi all and well done Mel for a pleasurable Meet :)
It was great to meet such nice interesting people and next time will make sure that it's for the full duration, the time just flew by.
I couldn't believe that i was the only Brummie there (did it show ::) will have to check passports next time incase there's any undesirables :P
Hope the trip up Brindley Place went well and no one ended up in the cut!
Don't think the weather could have been better, will post a pic of that floozy keeping a watchfull eye over the local council building, the sky realy was that blue.
Am ashamed to say that was my first visit to the Museum and Art Gallery :-[ as kids we were always taken to the Museum of Science and Industry in Loveday Street (near the BT tower) which i think has now become the "Think Tank" in Digbeth. It would take a couple of days to see everything properly but it was very enjoyable.
Once again thanks Mel and thanks to everyone for a pleasant time,
Best Wishes, Tony

Lucky to have a couple of handsome chaps there too.Difficult to believe some people wanted that concrete monstrosity at the back that masquerades as B'ham Library to become listed.

Difficult to believe some people wanted that concrete monstrosity at the back that masquerades as B'ham Library to become listed.
Thankfully it won't be the library for too many more years as they've just started building the new one. Mind you some people don't like the design of the new one either!
-
you are right there we took a look at the images for new one it looks like its covered in barb wire x

Where can we see the plans for the new one? After all don't we have a say in it too?
I like the pics GB especially the old geezers! ;D

Sorry not to have got on before now ... today is my busy day as you will have guessed ... and the snow overnight made getting to church difficult, to say the least ! Fortunately I had stuck a sack of grit in my car, which was almost empty by the time I got there, as I slid to a halt in several places and had to use it to get going again ! Who'd live in rural Wales !! ::) (I would !!)
Thanks VERY much Angel for organising a wonderful day ... it was lovely to meet people that have only been names on the site ! We must do it again ... I could have spent hours and hours in the museum, and there were lots of other places that would be good to see.
Thanks again Angel ... and I'll attempt to put up some pictures if my dodgy new b'band will allow ...
(P.S. Grumpy Blondie isn't grumpy at all ! ;D ;D ;D )
