Title: Death - James Stewart
Post by: Magian on Friday 09 October 09 16:50 BST (UK)
I am stumped and wonder if anyone can help me find a death certificate for James Stewart or suggest a line to follow.

James Stewart married Margaret MCNaughton 3/1/1845 in Edinburgh.
According to the birth certs of their children James (1846), John (1847) and Jane (1849) and the 1841 census he was a printer. He was born in Midlothian around 1815 (1841 census he was 26) I'm hoping a death certificate will help me there.

At the 1871 census Margaret was a widow living in Edinburgh describing herself as "formerly a printer's wife" so his death was prior to that and post the 1848 conception of Jane.

Any help would be appreciated.

the 1851 and 1861 census could help narrow down a death date

James Stewart had a son Joseph who was tranported to Australia under the alias goodwin.  He was tried in Edinburgh for theft.
He lived in Blair street with his brother.  Would someone with the same connection please email me and we can swap information
about our relations.

Hi Sheryl

When you say James Stewart had a son Joseph - which James Stewart is this? Is he the son of James and Margaret (McNaughton)?

Yes he is, I have been tracing joseph and his convict past for many years.  I discovered that these are his parents as put on his convict papers.

From www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/:

Joseph Stewart, alias Goodwin, brother of James Stewart Not called. Note: See also AD2/19/103-112; AD2/19/165-168; AD2/19/259-266

Date: 21 Feb 1848

Was Joseph a brother of James Snr.? Not sure how this can be confirmed as likely James Snr died pre the start of official registration to be able to confirm his parents' names.

What names do you have for Joseph's parents from his Australian records?

I cannot see a Joseph Stewart/Stuart in the 1841 census in Midlothian area that could fit but there is this entry in 1841 which may well be Joseph due to the Goodwin name:

James Goodwin 30, Gin & Beer Brewer b. Scotland
Eliza Goodwin 25 b. Scotland
Joseph Goodwin 10
James Goodwin 7
Eliza Alexander 8

Address: Shakespeare Square 7, Edinburgh

The use of two surnames in Joseph's trial paeprs may simply mean that his mother remarried and Joseph was known under two surnames perhaps.

I have seen the trees on Ancestry for Joseph, with parents John Armour Stewart and Janet McNaughton  :) Not sure if we can connect him or these parents to the James who married a Margaret McNaughton on this thread though  :-\

Can't easily see a Joseph Stewart with a birth date c. 1831 on the 1841 census. The only one that stood out was that entry under Goodwin.

Sheryl

Did this info come from Joseph's convict papers:

PARENTS JOHN STEWART/JANET MCNAUGHTON 23-5-1824 (DULL)

And from Joseph's marriage and death certs in Australia - were these names confirmed?

There are potentially some siblings showing for Joseph showing as born/christened in Edinburgh. These entries show on the Old Parish Registers for Edinburgh on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk:

15/09/1825   Elizabeth Stewart
27/03/1831   Joseph Stewart
31/10/1834   Emley Stewart

There looks to be a number of couples with the same names, a number of births/christening show in various places in Perthshire for a couple with these names so you need to take care with your line for Joseph that you don't make a mistake by going off his line.

Possibly the date that you have for Joseph's parents from his papers relates to their marriage. There is this entry showing on the OPRs:

John Stewart and Janet MacNaughtan on 23/05/1824 in Dull, Perthshire

Have you looked at any of these original images on Scotlands People to see what they may say about the family? Going by the dates we are seeing, possible that parents moved to Edinburgh after their marriage in 1824 and first born Elizabeth born there.

Sorry, I've been out the loop for a quite a while.

My James Stewart & Margaret McNaughton didn't have a son Joseph. We have no Australian connections.

I hope you find your one!
Regards
Magian

Hi Sheryl

When you say James Stewart had a son Joseph - which James Stewart is this? Is he the son of James and Margaret (McNaughton)?
