Title: ancestry search
Post by: chuter on Friday 09 October 09 13:45 BST (UK)
Hi my grand father was born Arthur Holland in mercer st newton in makerfield lancaster in 1881 His  fathers name was John , his mothers was Emma , maiden name Clarke . Arthur served in ww1, married Elizabeth Bye from Leeds Yorkshire and migrated to Australia in 1924 and died in 1960 when i was 7 years old . On his birth certificate it states his father was a saddler . Apart from some photos this is all i have . If at all possible i would love to talk with any one who may be related to or have some knowledge of the Holland family . I recently joined the Lacashire County Library , which i can only access through the web as i live in a small village in the Southern Highlands in the state of New. South. Wales. Australia . If any one could help it would be greatly appreciated , and by the same token if i can assist any one, this end of the globe i would be only to happy to as i am a member of the state library Sydney New. South. Wales. Cheers    Ray

Hi Ray

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

Do you have any Census for them?
An  1881 transcript can be found here:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

The parents are at Mercer Street, Newton in Makerfield Lancashire in 1881:
Father John HOLLAND is enumerated as age 26 born Stretton Cheshire 1855

Let us know if you want to find the earlier or later Census

Cheers
AMBLY

Hi again,

I think this is Arthur's father with his parents in 1871:-

living in Stretton (hard to read but could be Stretton Lane)

Thomas Holland 62 head born Chrislington, Cheshire occ agricultural labourer
Mary Holland 64 wife  born Lutton, Cheshire
Alfred Holland 21 son born Stretton, Cheshire  occ agricultural labourer
John Holland 18 son born Stretton, Cheshire occ sadler

RG10/3688/92 p 8

Trying to find a possible birth for John.  Northwich seems to be the closest place to Stretton  ??? and there are 2 possibles:-

Mar 1853
John Holland
Northwich 8a 224

Dec 1853
John Holland
Northwich 8a 203

And here are a couple of possible births for Emma:-

Dec 1850
Emma Clark
Northwich 19 184

(this could be mistranscribed on the FreeBMD as "19" doesn't make sense so it needs checking before you think of ordering the certificate - wouldn't want you to lose £7.00 for a typo  :).  It says "19" on Ancestry too  ???)

Mar 1854
Emma Clark
Northwich 8a 250

Well it would do. Ancestry  carries a 'mirror' of the Freebmd database

Northwich was X1X from 1837 to 1851 http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/northwich.html
You can always look at the pair of glasses to see if the translation is correct.
