Hi,
I'm sorry but I am looking for yet another Nottingham marriage.
I have an Elizabeth Barret(t) born 1665 who according to a contemporary family record marries Mr Coats. Another source cites her father's will where he is referred to as Thos. Cotes of Nottingham.
I would like to know where and when they married.
Thanks

Hi Brie….. :)
The only marriage that I can see for an Elizabeth Barrett to anyone called Cotes is this one;
Beeston – 14th November 1688
SAMUEL COATS & ELIZABETH BARRETT
From Philimore’s
Beeston – 14th November 1688
Mr Samuel Coats p. of Annesley and Mrs Elizabeth Barrett p. St Peter’s Nottingham
Kind regards
Sheila.

Thanks Dizzifish,
That's certainly food for thought.
Elizabeth did come from the Parish of St. Peter's. Her father was the vicar there until he was ejected in1662.
The Mrs doesn't worry me. In the contemporary written records we have of this part of the family all the women were referred to a Mrs whether or not they were married. It seems it was a courtesy title of the time.
However, the first name is a problem. I haven't seen the will but in the 1700s a chap called Calamy wrote up the biographies of the ejected ministers and he names Thos. Cotes as the son-in-law. So that's another will to check - if it still exists.
Thanks again, I will keep on digging.

Hi Brie
According to the marriage licence he was Thomas Coates.

Dizzifish,
If I could prevail upon you again. An outside chance.
I know from our family records that Elizabeth marries a Mr Cotes. I had assumed it to be Thos, because of the reference in Calamy. However, I think Elizabeth may have had a sister Susannah. Could Susannah have married Thos? Two brothers marrying two sisters.
The date of the marriage you found fits so beautifully too, I believe Susannah was born 1689 and Elizabeth in 1691.
Am I clutching at straws :)
Best wishes

Dizzifish,
Please ignore my last message, it looks as if Carol has found the answer. The red warning didn't come up and I hadn't realised Carol had posted.
Carol thanks for that. I suspect that the John Barrett, Clerk will be her father. He presumably had to do something else after being ejected. Also pleased with the Sandiacre connection. I know that Elizabeth Barret had a daughter Elizabeth Coates as she marries again into the family (making my grandmas my aunts or cousins and so on ::) and the only birth I could find that matched was in Sandiacre. And that is where I found the sister Susannah.
So it is all beginning to dovetail.
Thanks again both,
Brie

Hi
Would it be possible for you to share your BARRET history of Nottingham
I am researching William BARRET gent of thoroton and I believe john BARRET of sandiacre is a relative .
William BARRET has his coat of arms in thoroton church and It would be good to clarify his family .
Thanks

Hello,
I haven't looked at this side of the family for some time. I'm descended from John Barret, 1671-1713. He was the Minister of St. Peter's, Nottingham before he was ejected. You can find his biography in The Dictionary of National Biography which you can find on line. He's in the out of print editions so you can read his entry for free.
His son, Joseph, is my direct ancestor. Elizabeth, who married Mr Coates, was John's daughter, Joseph's brother.
I will dig out my stuff and PM you.
Hope this helps

Thank you that would be very kind ..
Funnily enough I am stuck on the children of “a” john BARRET The Barrets of thoroton were apparently cousins of your john who was ejected and I actually have the original coat of arms which was given to the Barrets
But am missing two generations of the connection back in the 1700s my great grandmother was a BARRET and passed down the coat of arms to the next male line..

The specific Nottingham Barrett coat of arms is also in a church in Barbados although they think that is a mistake which would seem rather strange .. but a possibility

So much to learn but to be honest I haven’t come across any of my BARRET relatives to date to find more information.. although there was a lady in autralia that I messaged who was apparently part of that BARRET family back in the 1600s
Thanks again for responding ..
I am on ancestry .. under early Barrets and Barrets / white .

Hello again Mark.
If you respond to this message you will have posted 3 messages and I will then be able to privately message you - so that my long rambling messages don't have to be on general view!
I don't know where my John Barret was born. I know he was at Cambridge, then in the East Midlands. He was ordained at Wymeswold, was then at St. Mary's, Nottingham before being ejected and moving out to Sandiacre. I haven't yet read his will but in Calamy Revisited by Matthews (an account of ejected ministers) the only family mentioned are his wife and his descendants whom I already knew about. Apparently John wrote a memoir of his son, Joseph, which I one day hope to locate and read as it may have a clue about where the family came from.
I agree there is a possibility that my John Barret is related to the Barret family at Thoroton but I don't have any evidence to back this. He could of course come from a different part of the country entirely and have moved to the East Midlands for his work.
Do you know anything about the religious beliefs of your Barrets? Or anything about the people they mixed with?
