I wonder if anyone has any information about Francina Radcliffe - who may have been born Francina Towne. She may have married Charles Radcliffe. If this is the case I think they were maybe from Hull. Francina died in 1789 aged 57.
Would be grateful for any information!
Thanks

From IGI (familysearch.org) parish record extract
Charles Ratcliff and Francina Towne married 30 Oct 1755 St Martin, Coney Street, York
The nearest match for her baptism on IGI (parish record extract) is a Frances Townes, father Richard 3 Jun 1736 Kingston upon Hull
There is a member record (not a parish record extract so caution is needed as they can be unreliable) which shows Charles Radcliffe born 1718 Huddersfield, death 23 Oct 1768, burial 1 Nov 1768 , parents William Radcliffe & Elizabeth Taylor - this record also shows spouse as Francina Towne. If correct then there is a parish record extract for Charles' baptism in Huddersfield St Peter 26 Apr 1716, father William.
All the best

Thanks for that....
This is not a relative of mine, but I have something inscribed with her name and a date. I was curious to know how it came to be in our family, but I suspect the only connection is Kingston upon Hull.

I am currently searching for information about her older brother, William Towne Radcliffe, who in 1851 was living at Smith House, Lightcliffe.
-
If Francina died in 1789 aged 57 she was born about 1732.
If William is her older brother, then born by 1730, which would make him 120 if alive in 1851.
How have you got back to him?

Just for reference this is a William T Radcliffe, landed proprietor living with a housekeeper and servants, at Smith House, born Halifax, in census of 1851

Yes, thank you. I have those records, plus the information about Smith House and the Moravians and Wesley. I am searching for information about his earlier treatment as a lunatic. So far only TNA has some details (at a cost, and not online).
Thanks again

Do you mean his specific treatment, or what would happen to anyone so diagnosed (and mis-diagnosed) in the 19th century?
-
Not sure, not having previously researched anyone so categorised. Just by googling his full name he pops up as having a file at The National Archives. I have requested a quote from them for paper copies.

I see the booklet on Smith House says William's sister Charlotte Lucretia Francina RADCLIFFE was buried at York Coney Street following an accident at school. She was buried on 23 Jan 1818 aged 23 at St Martin, Coney Street abode St Olave's. However the following article implies she also sent time in the asylum. https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/19562/page/3101/data.pdf
I think at this time York Asylum was in the parish of St Olave.
There is also a record of an application for a marriage licence for Charlotte and Joseph Brooke to marry in Halifax dated 5 Sep 1816 but as she was buried under her maiden name I guess the marriage did not take place.

Many thanks for that additional information. I had made a note about her early death, but had not picked up on the marriage plans. I am waiting for a couple of quotations from The National Archives which hopefully will give additional clues to what information they hold on her, and also on her older brother. I had seen references to her being in the York Asylum, but so far have not discovered where he was. He was back at home by 1841 (Ratcliffe) sic, 1851 and 1861. After reading the Gazette I realised the significance of the Land Agent.

Tra La La,
It might also be worth giving the Borthwick Institute a try as they hold the records for York Asylum.
https://www.york.ac.uk/borthwick/
I notice the national archives record for William is dated 1815, if he was admitted around this time it may also have been in York as the West Yorkshire Asylum did not open until 1818.

According to Foster's pedigree of the Radcliffe family, Francina Towne was born in 1731 and she was the daughter of Richard Towne of York. I am not specifically interested in the Radcliffes but more in her daughter Frances Radcliffe who married John Bond.
-
Many thanks for the information about another Francina RADCLIFFE. I believe her father Richard might be a first cousin to Charles, the father of Charlotta Lucretia Francina RADCLIFFE who died 1818 at York Asylum, aged 23 years. Her brother William had the middle name Towne, so clearly part of a larger family. According to a will her aunt in South Carolina carried the identical string of first names.
I am grateful for this additional information, and for the help from several other roots chatters.

Hi Tra la la
Yes there is a connection between Francina Towne and William Towne Radcliffe and Charlotte Lucretia Francina Radcliffe. See attached snip.

Wow! That is excellent, many thanks. Is it from a downloadable edition? I also had a passing interest in those Radcliffes from Huddersfield and Meltham, and there they all are.

Yes Tra la la you can download it for free. Go to https://archive.org and click on the search icon and type "pedigrees of the county families of Yorkshire" its volume 2 you want and there are various download options. Some of the pedigree charts are printed sideways (if you see what I mean) so the search facility doesn't work too well but the Radcliffe tree is on page 97 if that helps :)

This is probably far too late. Charlotte Lucretia Francina Radcliife’s parents and her brother William Towne Radcliffe were buried in a large chest tomb in a very prominent position in St Matthew’s Churchyard, Lightcliffe Halifax. Our website lightcliffechurchyard.org.uk will give some detail.
There is a connection to the Holmes family who welcomed Moravians and John Wesley.

Many Thanks Ianrob.
It is quite some time since I looked at the family of Charles Radcliffe and his family of Smith House. My original interest was in the family and lifestyle of his Head Gardener - James Sykes.
I will certainly take a look on your website.
Many thanks for the information.

We started restoring the churchyard 5 years ago and now have 11300 records of those buried. We are now trying to write up stories of some of the people buried here. Try About the churchyard>people of interest to see slow progress.
The burial search facility has a blip at the moment, just ignore the GEO code error each time. There’s a John Sykes and Sabina listed as gardeners.
Please make contact via our website email if you’ve time.

I have had a quick look at the website, particularly the Sunderland’s and the Sykes families. James Sykes was the Head Gardener for Charles Radcliffe at Smith House. He was also the proud father of Susannah Sykes, who became Mrs Sunderland, The Yorkshire Queen of Song. 2019 will be the bicentenary of her birth.
I will be returning to look for information from the headstones.
The website is super. Many thanks for all your hard work.
