Hi
I can't help with the census, but was wondering if you had come across a John Shaw at all with possible parents William and Margaret. John possibly born abt. 1839. He was believed to live in Irvine, prior to working his passage to Nz via Australia. Any info would be great.
Good luck with your search.

Hi Janie
In Ayr Census 1881, nothing leaping out - in Ayr itself only 3 Elizabeth or ELiza age 16 or 14 - none are yours as the father's names are not William. There are more possibilities outside of Ayr, but still in the Lowlands, for a match. To help narrow down:
Was Elizabeth born in Ayr?
Was William?
Any idea William's age & was he a widower? (of Marian NISBET?)
Their occupations ?
Cheers

...In 1881 Elizabeth would have been 16 and I believe she was born in Ayrshire.
Her parents are listed as either William and Elizabeth Shaw or William and Marian Shaw nee Nisbet.
On Elizabeths marriage certificate it states her mother was Elizabeth but on the poor application it states she was Marian
I am afraid that I can't tell you anymore about the family only that Marian/Elizabeth was dead by the time of Elizabeths marriage in 1890
...Janie
Hi Janie
Further to my last PM asking for William' s occupation & witness' to the marriage, I think I may have found Elizabeth in 1881:
IGI: Has William SHAW married to Marion NISBET as follows:
26 NOV 1843 Shotts, Lanark, Scotland (Nesbet)
24 DEC 1843 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland (Nisbet)
These 2 dates will refer to the same event, as banns would have been called in 2 parishes - his and hers, probably.
IGI has issue of William SHAW and Marion NISBET as follows:
1 AGNES SHAW Birth: 16 JUN 1855 Bothwell, Lanark
2 JOHN SHAW Birth: 11 MAY 1858 Bothwell, Lanark
3 JANE SHAW Birth: 10 MAY 1861 Bothwell, Lanark
4 ELIZABETH SHAW Birth: 23 JUN 1864 Bothwell, Lanark
There's probably more children, but the ones here are all from the time civil rego began in 1855 - and I'm sure you'll recognise it as a stroke of great fortune that Agnes was born in 1855 - her cert (if this turns out to be your family) should tell you what the they had for breakfast the day she was born ;D ;D
Follows is, I believe, the Elizabeth SHAW as born to William SHAW & Marion NISBET; in C81:
Boness Road, Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203617 GRO Ref Volume 625-2 EnumDist 12 Page 11
Head: William SHAW, Widower, age 58 born Airdrie, Lanark; Iron Miner
Dau: Jane SHAW, unmarr, age 19 born Chapelhall, Lanark; Housekeeper
Dau: Eliza SHAW, Unmarr, age 16 born Chapelhall, Lanark ; [no occ. stated)
Strongly feel this could be your family - if I remember rightly in another of your posts, was there not another link to Lanark, ? Not sure how you've come to believe she was born in Ayr, so perhaps your information will put the kybosh on my theorising ::)
Also, Chaplehall is in Airdrie, and I think perhaps Bothwell might be the RD that includes Chaplehall? Not sure on that - someone else may know.
Will restrain myself from further idea-ring, until you say what you think so far - I just hope William was an Iron Miner on her marriage cert. ;D
Cheers

Hi Anne
Elizabeth Shaw married Patrick Falloon in 1891 in Kilbirnie Ayrshire that is why I thought she may have been born there. I now have 2 applications made by her and her husband 1 is for when they stayed in Ayrshire and the other is in Glasgow and on both Elizabeth's father's address is given as Chapelhall and his occupation is a collier on her marriage certificate. I now believe that Patrick and Elizabeth may have met in Chapelhall as he seemed to spend his time between Ayrshire and Lanarkshire and possibly brought her home to Ayrshire to marry her
So I think that the info you sent me is correct and many thanks for your help it is very much appreciated

I'm so glad to ahve found this site, I'm hoping it can help me find out more. My family has not been good at passing down this information, and my oldest living relative has alzheimers, so sometimes she is able to share bits and pieces but we're not sure if it's accurate.
What I have is my grandmother's name and DOB, Shirley Shaw, Jan 15, 1929. She was born here in Canada, but her parents, Joseph Shaw and his wife Jennie Shaw nee Ferguson(DOB unknown, DOD 1974), emigrated to Canada from Scotland sometime before 1911 when their first child was born, Robert Shaw. Next child was Pearl, then Charles William(1913-1977), then Donald, and then my grandmother, Shirley Josephine. We don't know for sure if it was Jennie and Joseph that emigrated, or possibly their parents.
I know that either Jennie Ferguson's father OR Joseph Shaw's father, was named James. That's it unfortunately. I don't even know what area of Scotland, but I am pretty sure that Joseph Shaw's father was part of a highland regiment.
If anyone can add any info, I would really appreciate it.
Other names I have been told are Farquharson, MacDougal, and my own maiden name is Hughes. The Hughes side is from Ireland. My father is Larry Hughes, my grandfather was Alton hughes, his father was James Hughes.
