Title: Nathan Davy PICKESS
Post by: Margo47 on Tuesday 06 October 09 10:32 BST (UK)
Hi  We have managed to go back to 1847 with my husbands ancestry with the marriage of Nathan Davy Pickess and Amy Abbott in May 1847  Father is listed as Johnathan Osbourne Pickess Sailmaker
Is there any way of finding out more about Johnathan IE his wife's family and Nathans siblings I realise that this may be difficult as registration only started in 1837 Any help of information prior to 1847 would be gratefully appreciated
Margaret

Hello Margaret,

going from Nathan's birthplace in 1851 census, I looked at 1841-

there is this possibility:

1841

Fore Street Ipswich

Jonathan Peakess 45 yrs Sailmaker not born in county
Elizabeth Peakess 40 yrs born in county

from my Suffolk research, both Davey and Osborne are surnames from there.

This may be him as I have a copy of his indenture paper where he was apprenticed to his father as a sailmaker age 14 in 1841 his marriage certificate states he is a minor in the age section also Amy

Firstly- do you have access to 1841?

If you do - then the easiest way is to search for Jonathan Peakess in 1841- only him so that's it.

Otherwise, I always find it confusing at first- just clicking 1841 and then trying to enter the reference doesn't work - you need to get to 1841 England.
I just enter a/the name which brings up choices of England/Wales and then int he English one you can enter the reference at the bottom of the search bit.
Hope you can follow me  :D

1841 doesn't give much info sadly- no relationships and adult ages are rounded up so they appear younger.

The information is just what I wrote earlier - nothing else.   :(

just clicking 1841 and then trying to enter the reference doesn't work - you need to get to 1841 England.

After clicking 1841 if you then scroll down it will list all the 1841 censuses, (likewise for '51, '61 etc) so you click on England. You will then get a search page come up - put in the ref at the bottom.
(Personally I do all my searches from the individual census search page, not the general search page)
BTW this is for Ancestry, if you are using a different site it will prob be different!

Margaret, I'm also researching PICKESS in Suffolk and it's possible we may have a connection.  My great-great-grandfather was William PICKESS, b. around 1853, married to Caroline.

I've been looking at the Nathan Davy PICKESS family in the 1861 census and I think his son William R. (age 7 in 1861) may be my William - both were born in Ipswich and the age is about right.  Unfortunately I can't find William elsewhere to confirm.  In 1891 William and Caroline were living at 1 Siloam Place, Ipswich with sons William, Edward and Daniel.

Do you have any info on Nathan's family from 1861-1891, or any other information on his children?

Regards,

Howard
