Hi there
need some more help as usual! Can anyone identify the uniform of this person, date taken and possible location!
Thank you in advance!

Hi Christian
Here's a tidy up, colour to follow.
The pic was taken in a studio. Is there a photographer's name on the back at all?
I could be totally wrong but it looks more like a costume to me. ???
Regards
Caroline
-
Not a uniform these are day clothes & looks around WW1 or just after,
I don't think this is later than 1920,however her skirt looks a bit short for
this timeframe but if she's no older than 16 this would fit that time.
As Caroline says we need to see all of this plus the back.
She appears to be wearing a gold band on her right hand which I believe
was the custom in some European countries for married women.(if you think she's that old)

I suspect the image may be reversed.........ring/watch.
Hibee
EDIT: But then the buttons would be "wrong".
-
I suspect the image may be reversed
I've been caught out like that before so looked at the buttons as well. :D
The only way this would be in reverse is if this was a Tintype which it isn't so is this European ?

Christian
Here's my colour. Easily changed if required.
Jim
I was going to ask you do you think she's European, I do.

The watch is also on the 'wrong' wrist. It's an odd one this! I agree with Jim re the date but the skirt is a bit short for pre-1920 and the hemline is very uneven. Also, the small cap. Shoes have ribbons as laces :-\
Hair is up and she looks between 18 and early 20s to me.
Could the clothes be photographers' outfits?
Gadget
PS - is that a coral necklace - it looks like one that I have?
and when were those patterned stockings fashionable?
-
Blimey where have you lot been all my life!!!! Me and my cousin have studied our family photos, trying to guess what there all about... then you give us more info in 1hr then we could have dreameded of. Thank you so much for the colouring they look fantastic. should i put more pics on here i have many! Also i will scan the back of the lady on here own.

Hi Christian...Could the lady have been a dancer 'cos they look like character shoes to me as they have ribbons....when you post another photo if you want a Restore/colour...putting it in the subject bar so we will be able to give you what you want...it has been suggested in the past that we only restore/colour photos on request.
Caz: You wouldn't be aware of this because you were absent from the board at this time....lovely piece of work 8)
Carol

It could very well be some kind of tap dancer's outfit, Carol. That would explain the stockings, shoes and strange hemline :)
-
Just found some tap shoes that might be her's (except they have laces). They're called the Capezio brand:

Is she related to Countdown's Susie Dent? ;)
Hibee

Perhaps having her watch on her right hand makes her a left handed person. If I were to pose in a similar fashion I would prefer to rest my left hand / arm on the table and my watch is on my left hand. I would find that a more comfortable way to pose being right handed. Just a thought.
Also, welcome hastevenus, this forum is a fantastic place with very resourceful people that are so kind a willing to help. You no doubt will already be wishing you had found it much sooner! ;D I know I did ;D I think the hardest part is trying to return the good will and favours. Good luck with all your research, no doubt we will be seeing you here often.

That's a lovely job Cazza....

Aw thank you so much Hepburn, so nice of you to take the time to say! :-*

Just a comment on this:
I' m left handed but have always worn my watch on my left hand. We left handers tend to conform/adjust ;D
I do think that this is a flipped photo.
Gadget
-
Well that's another thing I have in common with Gadget (who is also a huge Man U Fan ;D ;D ;D ), I'm left handed and wear a watch on my left hand also. :D
Caz
-
Hope you don't mind, Cazza, I've just flipped your lovely colouring to see what it would look like:
Gadget
(PS Sunderland are my second team and look what happened yesterday :-X )
PPS - i think it looks right that way :D
-
I agree Gadget, it does look more natural that way and I'm sure that's the way the photographer would have posed her. :D
Well, yes you would have been in a quandary yesterday but um, have to say I was relieved by the result myself (Hull is No. 2 club for me but don't tell anyone! ;D ;D ;D ;D )
Caz
-
Just butting in here...I'm a "Leftie" too and wear my watch on my left arm ;D
Caz....I heard that ;D ;D ;D.....glad to hear it ;) ;) ;)
Carol
-
Well all you "sinister" lot (Latin for left = sinister!) there is another explanation....
I am right handed and wear my watch on my right wrist, as do many other musicians...It's easier to see how long the gig has left when playing an instrument!! Oh and how long before the beer!! (No beer, no blow!)

I'm also right handed and wear my watch on the right wrist, found it a bit 'not quite right' to wear it on the left wrist. :D :D
Terry
-
Well I think we've dispelled the watch theory as a means of determining photo orientation!
I was thinking of you this morning Terry, actually I'm reminded of you everyday as I pass Hastie St on my way to taking my daughter to school. I should "borrow" the sign and post it to you! ;D ;D :-X :-X :-X

I'm still puzzled by those stockings.
I've been Googling and can't yet find anything about stripped/patterned stockings at all. Most of the bits have about 2 paragraphs which give accounts of stockings since Eve to the 1920s and then jump to the invention of nylons ::)

So glad this pic has got everyone talking about watches, football and flips! just 4 the record i'm also a lefty and wear my watch on my left wrist. i must say i love the coloured flip version. can i rescan all my tin of oldies and let you all play with them!
christian
-
I'm left handed but look at the clock if I want to know the time. ;D
I don't think this has been flipped as in Gadget's photo her buttons are on the wrong side, also it would have to be a Tintype unless the snapper was drunk. :o
What type of photo is it? poscard or CdeV?Have you got the original? Can you show all of it & back?
jim
-
hi jim, have the original will scan back now... also everyone keeps saying scan in 300dpi, well my scanner, (epson 4180 photo) is already preset to this and i cant change it!! i am putting some more pics on for you all to do your magic!
christian
-
A postcard then not a tintype.I have just seen another dress the same as this dated 1918.

Yeah! Lefties Rule!! ;D ;D ;D
By all means Christian, post away.
Caz
-
Just read that Jim's a leftie too...we really do rule! ;D ;D ;D ;D!!
Can't find anything about the stockings either Gadget, except textured ones were popular in the 60s ???
Caz
-
Yep - I had lots of fancy tights in the 60s ;D
I suppose they must have been very fine lisle stockings but I still find them odd for that time.
Christian's put up another photo of this young lady in a coat and brimmed hat this time. I think same shoes and hair style and looking very much the same age. Maybe that piccie will give us more clues to this one :-\
-
sorry to dissapoint, but it isnt the same lady!!!!
-
Are you sure?
Either that or very closely related:
-
I shall ask my oldies in the family, but i am sure that when they gave me the pics, they said that one was my nan and the other was unknown.... shall be intouch........
-
I was thinking of you this morning Terry, actually I'm reminded of you everyday as I pass Hastie St
Caz
Caz
Poor you, reminded of me every day :P ;D ;D ;D
So I have a claim to a street :P........Some of mine did go to Australia, infact 2 seperate branches of my Hastie's had family go to there in the 1800's.... you never know ;)
On the left handed theme my grandson is a leftie and for over a year now (his first year at school) they have been determined to make him right handed even after son and DIL have repeatedly told them he's left. Finally sorted now but he was one confused wee boy ???
Terry
-
Have to say it looks the same to me too.Found this from 1918.
jim
-
That's a match, Jim :D
Where did you find it?
I've just found some of the restores that I did on this yesterday or Sunday and, since Christian seems to quite like us repairing, here are a couple - one straight and one with a bit of woven texture :)
Gadget
-
I've seen that type of stocking before on period pics...
Now...I just need to remember the book they were in!

I had a great aunt who had a pair of stockings very similar to those shown in the picture. She was born in 1881 and assuming she wore them around age 20 or later, this would put the time frame around 1901- ?.
Hope this helps.
Iggy

I was just struck by the similarity of the dress, shoes and pose in this photo of mine (beautifully restored/coloured here on the Photo Restoration Board).
This is my great aunt Winifred Pay in about 1918.
-
I have been wondering about the similarity of the dresses (which look to be variations on a theme) and wonder if they have been home made dresses made from book / paper patterns. The WI had books at the time with patterns in them;
http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/1918-dressmaking-made-easy-vintage-book
and the Girls Own Paper and Annual had style / fashion advice and dress patterns in them in the 1800's. The paper ran from 1880 to 1941. Some might find the link below interesting
http://www.uea.ac.uk//~h720/GOP/
http://www.uea.ac.uk//~h720/GOP/images.shtml
The image is of my 1891 copy. I wanted one to see what my Great Aunts would have been reading when they were young. The paper was for young girls and young women, house keeping tips and wrinkles. Makes for fascinating reading especially the agony aunt columns. Some of the questions and answers are just so laughable. One such example was a young woman asking if it would be alright to give a male friend a nightdress case. The agony aunt was horrified at the suggestion with such an intimate kind of gift and even more worried that the recipient might even use it for his nightdress! How times have changed.
