Benjamin Kilner was a soldier stationed on the Ionian Islands and died at the Regimental Hospital on Corfu 23 Nov 1836. His wife Mary returned to England following his death.
http://website.lineone.net/~remosliema/Ionian1.htm
Hannah KILNER, born on Santa Maura
Harriet KILNER, born on Zante
Mary Anne KILNER, born on Corfu
Peter KILNER, born on Corfu
Ruth KILNER, born on Corfu
William KILNER, born on Cephalonia
The are a large number of Kilners around Denby and although I have not been able to find a connection between these families and Benjamin, his widow Mary came to Denby on her return to England.
A daughter, Sarah Eliza Kilner, was baptised at Denby on 30 Jan 1838 - over 12 months after Benjamin's death. I have not been able to find a baptism for any of the other children.
Any advice would be most welcome and I should appreciate a look up in the 1841 census for Mary Kilner and her daughter Sarah Eliza Kilner. Mary married Benjamin in 1816 so she would be over 40 years old in 1841 and as Benjamin died in 1836 then Sarah Eliza must have been at least 5 years old.
Thank you.
-
The IGI entry for Sarah Eliza's baptism states that she was born 3 May 1838 - I'm not sure whether her mother is Benjamin's widow or not.
This could be them in 1841:
HO107/1324 7 6 - Upper Denby, Yorks

Jane KILNER - 50 - Fancy Weaver
Mary KILNER - 25 - ?? Maker

Sarah KILNER - 3

HO107/2334 229 24 - Denby, Yorks

Thank you, Rambler.
It looks as though the Sarah Eliza baptised in 1838 is the illegitimate daughter of Mary Kilner and I am, therefore, barking up the wrong tree altogether.
I shall have to go back to the drawing board and put my thinking cap on.
-
I you don't mind, can you please check in 1841 for
Hannah Kilner, born 1822/3, on the Ionian Islands
William Kilner, born 1824/5, on the Ionian Islands
Harriet Kilner, born 1826/7, on the Ionian Islands
Ruth Kilner, born 1831/2, on the Ionian Islands
If they are not present in the census then it would seem the widowed Mary Kilner did not return to England before 1841.
Thank you.
-
I haven't located any of the family so far on the UK censuses - unless they're badly mistrancribed (or I'm missing something obvious!), it looks as though they may have stayed in Corfu. ???
-
My old computer crashed disastrously a few months ago. I have had to rebuild my family tree without a lot of the source information; just some notes and I have made some comments that the surname was sometimes transcribed as 'Kinder'.
Benjamin was the son of Abraham Kilner and Hannah Taylor (I know little about them other than their marriage at St Peter's Church, Huddersfield on 8 Feb 1796) and Benjamin was baptised at St Peter's Church, Huddersfield on 4 Jun 1797. Benjamin married Mary Singleton at St Mary's Church, Elland on 13 Oct 1816.
It may be I am totally wrong about the Denby connection and that the widow Mary and her children went back to the Elland area.
-
I think I've located Ruth now:
Marriages Jun 1849
CLAY George
KILNER Ruth
Huddersfield 22 250
1851
HO107/2297 40 43 - Clarks Green, Rastrick, Yorks
George CLAY - Head - 31 - Cloth Dresser - Huddersfield
Ruth CLAY - Wife - 19 - Corfu (British Subject)
Benj. CLAY - Son - 1 mo - Rastrick
She's on all censuses up to 1901 - let me know if you want the details of her family.
Off to hunt for the others now!
-
Harriet is working as a servant in Huddersfield in 1851 - I don't know how I missed her earlier. (HO107/2295 556 7) I haven't spotted a death or marriage for her yet.
Here's Hannah:
Marriages Jun 1848
KILNER Hannah
NOBLE Luke
Halifax 22 158
1851
HO107/2299 17 26 - South Gate, Elland, Yorks
Luke NOBLE - Head - 32 - Engineer - Elland
Hannah NOBLE - Wife - 27 - Coast of Egypt (British Subject)
Mary E NOBLE - Dau - 2 - Elland
On later censuses, Hannah's birthplace is given as Ionian Iland (sic), Corfu and Santa Mara - let me know if you want details of her family.
-
Harriet in 1841 - found her!
HO107/1299 (folio number missing) page 1
Armley Top, Elland, Yorks
Harriot KILNER - 13 - Servant - Foreign Parts
She's probably in service with the LINDLEY family listed just above her, but the enumerator seems to have marked her on her own in a separate household.
So presumably the rest of the family are somewhere in the Elland area - I shall keep hunting....
-
Thank you, Rambler.
I have found this site
http://www.c5d.co.uk/chaplainsbirths.htm
with
Hannah Kilner Cephalonia 11 82
Harriet Kilner Corfu 11 84
Mary Anne Kilner Corfu 11 81
Peter Kilner Corfu 11 154
Ruth Kilner Corfu 11 206
William Kilner Cephalonia 11 84
Unfortunately the chap wants £10.60 for each certificate.
If Harriet is back in England in 1841 then I presume it is reasonable to assume the rest of the family were also.
-
I would presume they're all in England - Harriet seems too young to have come back on her own? I'm wondering whether Mary remarried, and the others are listed under her husband's surname, although I've tried searching just on first names and looking for one the right age born in "Foreign Parts". 1841 is annoying, of course, with not giving full birthplaces.
-
Thank you for all you have done so far, Rambler. I hadn't thought of that to be honest. I have just checked on the FreeBMD and there is a marriage of a Mary Kilner in the Halifax registration district in the September quarter of 1839:
Marriages Sep 1839 (>99%)
ANDERSON John Wilson Halifax 22 126
BARRITT Hannah Halifax 22 126
BRADLEY Sarah Halifax 22 126
CRAWSHAW Nathan Halifax 22 126
KILNER Mary Halifax 22 126
MAUDE Hannah Mitchell Halifax 22 126
Tiffin John Halifax 22 126
WINTERBOTTOM John Halifax 22 126
-
I am trying to track down a Mary Kilner who came back to WRY following the death of her soldier husband, Benjamin Kilner. With help from Rambler it seems she didn't go to Denby as I previously thought but to the Halifax area.
I found a possible marriage for Mary in 1839, prior to the 1841 census, so if someone has the time may I please ask if they can check to see if a Mary Anderson (husband John Wilson), Mary Crawshaw (husband Nathan), Mary Tiffin (husband John) or a Mary Winterbottom (husband John) is in the Halifax area in 1841.
Unfortunately, I do not know Mary's age but Benjamin was born in 1797 so I suppose she would be aged around 40. There may be several children of her in the household; Hannah (aged 17/18), William (aged 15/16), Ruth (aged 8/9) Mary Anne (age unknown) and Peter (age unknown).
Thank you.

I've just found this forum and have been very interested to read the comments. I'm descended from Abraham Kilner through Benjamin his son and Benjamin's daughter Ruth. I have a copy of Ruth's baptismal certificate and also a copy of her marriage certificate to George Clay. If anyone wants the details I'm happy to provide them.
-
I have a lot of information on the Kilner family.
I am not sure how many posts one has to make before being able to send Personal Messages - is it 3? If you can do this then I can send you what I have and we can compare notes.
For Ruth Kilner and her husband George Clay, I do not have certificates but a lot of census information on them and their 11 children:
Benjamin, born 1850/1
Ann Amelia, born 1852/3
John William, born 1855/6
Harriet, born 1858/9
Clara, born 1859/60
George Arthur, born 1862/3
Fred, born 1864/5
Laura, born 1866/7
Walter, born 1868/9 - I believe he died in 1880
Herbert, born 1869/70
Wilfred, born 1873/4
I also have a grandson, Cecil Alexander Clay born 1896/7, of unknown parentage as he was living with his grandmother Ruth - an illegitimate child of one of the daughters?
I have not been able to confirm if Mary Kilner (nee Singleton) remarried.
-
The following is what I've found by looking at someone elses tree on a different site. My apologies if you already have this information.
Harriet Kilner 1827 - 1901 married Richard Scholes !832 - ?.
Harriet died in Victoria, Australia. They had a daughter Hannah born 1864 in Carisbrooke, Newmarket, Victoria.
Hannah Kilner 1923 - ? married Luke Noble 1818 - ? of Elland
William Kilner 1829 - 1892 married twice
1. Lena Fortescue 1836 - 1862. Children Mary 1857 born Hobart, Tasmania. Harriet 1860 Sydney. Frances 1862 Queensland.
2. Emma Dutton (nee Bailey) 1829 - 1884. Children William 1869 Queensland. Louisa 1871 Brisbane.
Is this any help?

Hello
I have been working on Abraham Kilner and Hannah Taylor or many years; also in collaboration with two ladies in Australia, who are descendants of Harriet Kilner's (b 1827) daughter Hannah Maria Scholes, and a lady descended from John Taylor Holroyd. This lady has a family bible which was invaluable.
I have no objection to sharing this information and would be interested in learning how you fit into the family.
PM me when you have made sufficient postings to be able to do so.
-
There is a Mary Winterbottom listed in 1841 but in but Delph Hill, Rastrick. (This is transcribed as being in Halifax) No husband but 4 children with surname Winterbottom. n Ruth age 10 scholar, Peter age 5 scholar, Hannah age 19 servant and Harriet age 14 servant. The right Christian names but not accurate on ages. Mary would be 43 and Peter 16 by my reckoning.
-
Thank you; this makes sense. The ages of children up to the age of 15 were supposed to be given on the 1841 census but the ages of everyone over the age of 15 ws given to the lowest 5 years.
I think you have found the right family as John Winterbottom was one of the possibilities for Mary Kilner's marriage in 1839.
Hannah was born in 1823 so 19 in 1841 is correct.
Harriet was born in 1827 so 14 in 1841 is correct.
Ruth was born in 1832 so 10 in 1841 is correct.
I believe Peter was born in the 1830s so 5 in 1841 is quite feasible.
The only missing child is Mary Anne but she may have died.
I do not know the mother Mary's year of birth; what age did she give in the 1841 census?
I have sent you a PM as you have now made enough postings to be able to do so.

Hello and welcome to Rootschat
I was in contact with two ladies in Australia several years ago. Their email address must have changed as I have lost contact. When you have made enough posts to activate the personal message system - I think it is 3 - I shall PM you their names.
I have Richard Denton Scholes marrying Harriet Kilner at Halifax on 31 Jan 1853. Their first child, John Paul Scholes, was born (or baptised) at Halifax on 13 Aug 1854 and the family then went to Australia some time before 1859.
I have the following information on the family:
Richard Denton Scholes, born ca 1832, died in Carisbrook, Vic on 18 Apr 1895.
Harriet Scholes, born 1827, on Zante, Ionian Islands, died in Carisbrook, Vic on 26 Dec 1901.
John Paul Scholes married Janet Smith at Carisbrook, Vic on 16 Jan 1878. I know nothing else of this family other than John died on 13 Jul 1909 at Bridgewater, Vic.
An Unnamed Infant, born and died in 1859, at Carisbrook, Vic.
Mary Ann Scholes, born (or baptised) on 12 Jun 1860 at Carisbrook, Vic. She married at James Swale around 1881 at Carisbrook, Vic. He must have died as Mary Ann subsequently married William Hutchison around 1913. I know nothing else of this family other than Mary Ann died 9 Jun 1941 at Inglewood, Vic.
Hannah Maria Scholes, born (or baptised) on 2 Apr 1864 at Carisbrook, Vic. She married Walter Warren on 12 May 1885 at Carisbrook, Vic. I have some information on the descendants of their children Martha Ethel and Arthur Richard. Hannah Maria died on 31 Jan 1931 at Brunswick, Vic.
Arthur Scholes, born (or baptised) on 18 Jun 1865 at Carisbrook, Vic. He married Ada Rosina Buxton around 1889 at Fitzroy, Vic. I know nothing else of this family other than Arthur died on 11 Jun 1934 at Horsham, Vic.
Martha Elizabeth Scholes, born around 1868 at Carisbrook, Vic. She married Paul Williams 30 Jan 1902 somewhere in Vic. Again, I know nothing else of this family other than Martha Elizabeth died on 17 Sep 1915 at died in Carisbrook, Vic.
I should be very interested if you could fill in any gaps.
I have Harriet Kilner's ancestry back to her grandfather Abraham Kilner and a lot of information on the descendants of Abraham Kilner which I am quite happy to share with you if you don't already have it.

Following up on Scholes, I am looking for any information the origins of James Richard (Tiger) Scholes, 1890-1963 who was the local mounted policeman in Bendigo, Vic Australia. Married to Ethel Mary Sellwood.
My husband is a grandson of James Richard (Tiger) Scholes
Thanks
-
Hello
I have no information on later generations. However, if you can obtain a birth certificate for James Richard Scholes then I shall be able to place him in the family.
Interestingly, Thomas Kilner Scholes was a policeman in Bendigo.
-
Thank you so much for your info.
Will try to obtain the birth certificate, so that we can follow back from there
Very interested in this.
-
Hello
I am also in contact with Elizajan.
Richard Denton Scholes is not a blood relative so I have not researched his ancestors. My interest is in the Kilners and I do have a lot of information on them.
I shall do what I can to help.
