Joseph - 30 head - coal miner b. Ferryhill
Mary Jane - 20 wife -    b. West Auckland
Jane Ann - 2 - daug. - b. Shildon

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Moraf

A child's birth certificate would give you Jane's maiden name, unless you already know it

The marriage certificate should give you both fathers' names and occupations, to be certain of finding them in earlier census

possible marriage registration:
Sep 1887 Auckland    10a   281
FOSTER    Joseph    and on same page  WADE  Mary Jane

Barbara,
Thanks for that. Brilliant!

That is the correct marriage. Family legend has it that Mary Jane Wade had a cousin, Rev.Spencer Wade but I have no evidence. Also there were 2 more children to Joseph and Mary- Robert Edward (my grandfather) and Joseph.
Thanks again.
Moraf.

Hi Moraf,

If you're certain Mary Jane's surname was Wade, that means slaw has probably found the right family in 1881 for you. To find out the Spencer Wade connection we will have to go back a bit further in the census.

Still not sure of Joseph's father's name, or do you know that already?

Jane remarried, the only marriage I can see is   Dec 1865  Auckland  10a 325
 FORSTER    Jane       HOLLINGWORTH Richard

but the census shows Richard's name as HENWITCH (indexed as Abenwetch on one site and Abramovitch on another) so I'll need to check that  - edit I have, and the name is (almost) right in 1881

1871 census RG10 piece 4928 folio 64 page 56
Auckland Terrace, Old Shildon
Richd HENWITCH head 44  Yorkshire, Leeds    Coalminer
Jane     "            wife 33    Durham
Thos FORSTER   step-son 18   Shildon Durham     Coalminer
John       "              "        17        "                           "
Wm          "               "        15       "                            "
Margrt    "       step-dau   13       "
Joseph   "       step-son  11   Chilton, Durham
Elzth       "      step-dau   9    Shildon
George HENWITCH son   5         "
Ricd              "            "    2       "
John  SPENCE   lodger   13        "

in 1881 the name is Hollingsworth, and Joseph and the other children have taken their stepfather's surname, Joseph probably reverted back when he married Mary Jane Ward.  Their marriage cert should show if his father was deceased

1881 census RG11    Piece 4918  Folio 54 Page 37    http://www.rootschat.com/links/077q/

Slaw, Barbara,
Thanks for the great work.
Mary Jane was definately Wade, so the right family.
I don't have anything on the family before 1891 census.

Your last reply seemed to come in before I posted my last one, so not sure if you saw it or not!

By 1891 Joseph's mother Jane had also died:

1881 for Mary Jane Wade, as slaw said it's free to view:

father called Spencer Wade, so that name is obviously in the family, will trace them back to see if I can find the Rev. Spencer Wade

Mary Jane had  younger brother called Spencer, maybe he became a Reverend?
You would need to maybe check the 1911 census for him to find out.  You need to buy credits to do that.

1891 census RG12 Piece 4075 Folio 58 Page 53
Diamond Terrace, West Auckland

WADE
Spencer   43  Coal Miner     Leeds, Yorks
Ann      48
John      22  Coal Miner

Thos      16         "
Elizabeth  14
Isabella      11  Scholar
Spencer      8         "
all but father born West Auckland

1901 census RG13 Piece 4652 Folio 18 Page 27
Toad Pool, West Auckland
Spencer Wade head 53 Overman    Leeds
Ann            "     wife  58                    West Auckland
Spencer      "     son  19 Hand Putter      "

Or maybe you're hoping that this Spencer Wade is the relation, Chaplain to the armed forces?

an article written by him is here: http://ext.sagepub.com/cgi/pdf_extract/54/10/277

Well I think we've got quite a long way with them in a short time  :)

The next step would be for you to get their marriage certificate to confirm the census information, before going any further back

Barbara  :)

I agree, I really didn't anticipate such a great response.

Hi,
I went to the local library yesterday but couldn't find anything about James and Jane.
Unable to find a marriage cert. so Jane's maiden name remains a mystery. Also not sure if
the James that was killed at Shildon Lodge is my James.

Also not sure if the James that was killed at Shildon Lodge is my James.

The only way to find out would be to look at his death cert, but it would be better to find the marriage cert first, or perhaps, as I said re the marriage of Joseph and Mary Jane, a child'd birth cert would give Jane's maiden name.  You could also go for the Jane Forster/Richard Hollingworth marriage cert, but stipulate that you only want it if she was a widow.  It should give you her maiden name.

Kind regards
Barbara

I was looking on Google for some info and came across "Rev Spencer Wade" He was my grandfather and certainly came from the Auckland area. His father was ?a pit manager. Am not into geneology but his dates were approx 1888-mid 1970s if I can be of more help I will.
He married Annie Hindmarch & had one  son John Basil Spencer Wade born around 1919

Hi im looking for the birth and family of my adopted dad, his name was John Robert Foster b. c1918 in Shildon (I think). He had two brothers James and Richard. Does anyone have these people in their family. (I don't know anything else about them).
