Possible the John A Major that married Mary Bostock registered Nantwich Cheshire in 1914, but you would have to get Prudence and Alfreds marriage certificate for her age and fathers name and occupation for a start, then her birth certificate.

Received the marriage certificate this morning of John Arthur Major and Mary Bostock 19th January 1914 St Mathew Haslington, reg Nantwich.

John Arthur Major 23 a Batchelor Fireman, 11 Henry Street, Haslington father Arthur Major Labourer.
Mary Bostock 19 a Spinster 11 Henry Street, Haslington father Alfred Bostock Dock Labourer.

Witnesses: Wilfred Charles Cartwright
Freda Wells Joseph Henry Major

Using this as a guide I have searched the 1901 census as I currently have no record of John Arthur or his parents on any of the census.

On the 1901 census I have found this information:
School Lane, Haslington

Thos Bateman           Head   Widower   M   52   1849   Labourer (County Co),  Hassall Moss, Cheshire
John Arthur Major   Grand Son      M   10   1891   Haslington, Cheshire,
Joseph Henry Major   Grand Son      M   10   1891   Haslington, Cheshire

RG13  - 3354 - 105 - 15

I think this could be the right John Arthur as the Haslington fits the marriage certificate of John Arthur and Mary Bostock  :D
and more importantly Joseph Henry Major's name appears as a witness on the marriage certificate (although it does appear as Freda Wells Joseph Henry Major).

I have found him or whom I believe in 1911
Pool Farm. Haslington

Herbert Samuel Bloor   Head   Married 34 years    M   57   1854   Farmer Dairy   Cheshire Haslington
Sarah Bloor                   Wife   Married 34 years    F   54   1857      Cheshire Haslington
Louisa Bloor                   Daughter   Single    F   31   1880   Farmers Daughter Dairy Work   Cheshire Wistaston
Samuel Bloor                 Son   Single    M   29   1882   Farmers Son Working On Farm   Cheshire Haslington
John Major                   Servant   Single    M   18   1893   Waggoner On Farm   Cheshire Haslington
Albert Parkes                  Servant   Single    M   16   1895   Cowman On Farm   Cheshire Wheelock
Annie Morris                    Servant   Single    F   16   1895   General Servant Domestic   Cheshire Coppenhall

RG14 - 21762   - RG14PN21762 RG78PN1297 RD449 SD1 ED10 SN1

Can anyone help me find them in 1891 and your comments on the above please!

Hmmm...this is unusual? What does everyone think?

I have searched tonight for Arthur's father on the 1891 census and found him with his wife and children (twins I can't believe it again as they show up so often in the family its amazing)

School Lane, Haslington
RG number: RG12      Piece: 2854      Folio:  11      Page:  17

Arthur Major        Head   Married    M   21   1870   Labourer In R Works Haslington, Cheshire
Sarah E Major                    Wife       F   23   1868   Wheelock,Cheshire
John A Major                      Son       M   0 (6M)   1891   Haslington, Cheshire
Joseph H Major                   Son       M   0 (6M)   1891   Haslington, Cheshire

However I have also found in 1891
RG number: RG12      Piece: 2854      Folio:  11      Page:  17
School Lane, Haslington

Thomas Bateman   Head   Married            M   42   1849   Chemical Labourer Hassall, Cheshire
Elizabeth Bateman   Wife   Married            F   48   1843   Warburton, Cheshire
Rhoda Major           Daughter   Single    F   17   1874   Domestic Servant Haslington, Cheshire
William   Major        Stepson   Single    M   23   1868   Labourer In Railway Works Haslington, Cheshire
Frederic Bateman   Son                       M   14   1877   Farm Servant Haslington, Cheshire

Can anyone explain the relationship between the Major's and Batemans? My head hurts?

Hi David,

In case of headaches take two of Bursys tablets ;D

I haven`t worked it all out yet but I suspect that Thomas Batemans wife in the 1891 census was actually Arthur Major (born c.1869 ish)  mother. She has knocked a couple of years off her age though  ::)

Thomas Bateman married Elizabeth Major at St. Matthew Haslington in 1889.  (added just seen Dotty has found the same)

If you look back for Arthur you will see that his mother Elizabeth was born Warburton as was Thomas Batemans wife in 1891.  The Major family have been transcribed as Magor on the 1871 census.  Arthur aged 2  ::)  His father was Joseph.

Now for the tricky bit.  I believe that Thomas Batemans first wife was Ann Major who he married in 1869 at St, Matthew, Haslington.  I think she was Joseph Majors sister.

Regards,
Mo

I have found Arthur Major b.1870 marriage to a Sarah Ellen Hockenhull Jun1890
Natwich, Cheshire 8a 549

That is looking like an essential purchase :-) to find Arthur's parents and to determine if Elizabeth is his sister that looks probable?

Going off Dotty's info I have found the following on the 1881 census please post your thoughts:
RG number: RG11      Piece: 3544      Folio:  92      Page:  24
Cant read the address in Haslington

Elizabeth Major   Wife   Married    F   40   1841   Warburton , Cheshire
Joseph W Major   Son   Single    M   14   1867   Scholar Haslington, Cheshire
Arthur Major   Son   Single    M   12   1869   Scholar Haslington, Cheshire
Rhoda Major   Daughter   Single    F   7   1874   Scholar Haslington, Cheshire

I cant find any of them or Elizabeth in 1881?

Hi,

When you can`t find what you are looking by the usual means you can use an asterisk * in place of any letters.  You can search for Jos* Ma*or, born Hasli*ton or *oseph *a*or  born Haslington etc. etc.

Found it before your post Dotty, but thank you xxxx.

I have gone on to find Ann with Thomas and her three sons
Thomas 1869 Haslington
John 1873 Haslington
and Fredrick 1876 Haslington.

I have also found a marriage of Joseph and Elizabeth who later went on to marry Thomas Bateman.
Marriages Dec 1863

Major    Joseph                Altrincham    8a   253
Richardson    Elizabeth        Altrincham    8a   253

I am struggling to find out why Elizabeth remarried the husband of her sister-in-law did Ann Major die? I cant find her death?

Marriages Mar 1889   (>99%)
Bateman    Thomas        Nantwich    8a   425
Major    Elizabeth        Nantwich    8a   425

I wonder why she kept the major name rather than using her maiden name? Is this usual?

In 1891
RG number: RG12      Piece: 2854      Folio:  11      Page:  17
School Lane, Haslington

Thomas Bateman   Head   Married            M   42   1849   Chemical Labourer Hassall, Cheshire
Elizabeth Bateman   Wife   Married            F   48   1843   Warburton, Cheshire
Rhoda Major           Daughter   Single    F   17   1874   Domestic Servant Haslington, Cheshire
William   Major        Stepson   Single    M   23   1868   Labourer In Railway Works Haslington, Cheshire
Frederic Bateman   Son                       M   14   1877   Farm Servant Haslington, Cheshire

Elizabeth is living with Thomas and her two children (Joseph) William Major and Rhoda Major from her first marriage to Joseph and Frederic Bateman youngest and third child of Thomas's first wife Ann Major (sister of Joseph).

The children were therefore cousins and then step brothers/sisters...LOL! Very weird...wouldn't you agree?
