I cannot find a record of my great grandfather's birth, Charles Edward Shufflebottom. He was supposed to have been born in Manchester in1882. I have sent off for a few certificates but they have been the wrong ones. I have found his sister's birth in L'pool in 1884 & have tried to search for him there too but with no luck. Is there a possibility that some people do not have their births registered?
-
Some do not, some get missed off the GRO index or get mis-filed.
Where did the date/place info come from? Can you give us a census perhaps?

Hi and welcome,
There is a Charles Shufflebottom aged 19 in 1891 living in Preston. Could this be him I wonder. His birth would be c1872.

Yes, it's also useful to know just what would make it the 'right' birth cert.
Do we have a father's given details from a marriage or some such document?
Pauline
-
Unfortunately I can't give census because he moved to Northern Ireland in 1886. His father is on the 1881 census in Liverpool - also Charles Edward Shufflebottom - blacksmith. He is a widow - he was married previously & his 1st wife died. I can't find a marriage record either for him. His wife is supposed to be from Ireland - although the only records I have for her do not give her age or birthplace. I did wonder if they weren't married but am not sure.
-
I have got his marriage cert that says his father is blacksmith, he told the family that he was born in manchester, I can't find the records I really want i.e. his parents marriage cert, his birth cert & his mothers death cert.
-
Is he mis-indexed on 1881?
I can't see him with the info you give...

Thank you I have those but still can't find a birth record - it's just so frustrating!
-
Presumably you've discounted the Charles Shufflebotham , Jun Q 1881 in Prescot and the Charles Shufflebottom, Sept Q 1881 in Manchester?
-
The birth for Manchester also has a death for the same name at the same time so I have discounted that, the preston one is not one I have considered although do not want to purchase any more birth certs that aren't the right ones!!
-
Sorry not preston - prescot!!

Do you know that if you apply to the local register office (ie not GRO) and give details such as father's name is Charles or Charles Edward , the local record office will not charge you anything unless the details you give and the details on the certificate match. The trick is to be specific enough without being too specific. If , for example, you say father's name is Charles Edward, and it only says Charles on the certificate, they won't send the certificate but you won't know whether the father's name was Charles or Noggin the Nog. In this case, you might say "father's full name was Charles Edward but I will accept Charles or Chas." or whatever criteria you will accept.

His bday was in Feb - did births get registered promptly or could it take a while? Ie - is the qtr likely to be qtr 1?
-
There was a time limit that you had to register by, I think it is/was 6 weeks. After the time limit, I don't think you could register atall. There are other posts here on Rootschat with the definitive answer, just put a suitable phrase into the Search facility.
Must log off now - Goodnight!

This is very helpful - thank you very much.

Hi Joan,
I was looking at your list of names and noticed Kennerley/Congleton. There was a bunch of Kennerleys based in Winsford as well and I have some details on these if you are interested.
Quite new to RC and not sure how to pass this info on within this chat.
Cheers,
layerb

1911 Irish census lists a Charles Shufflebottom age 32 born in England living in Belfast-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Shankill/Acton_Street/175775/
If this is the same person looks like the birth might be c1879 not 1882.

Thanks Aghadowey
I have that marriage cert as that is my gt grandfather. I've tried all different dates, still no joy. I have just received 2 certs, one for his wife's death & another for a daughter that they had that I didn't know about. She died in Belfast in 1880 - I can't see a birth cert for her in Belfast - she may have been born in lancs. This may lead to more info.
Just keep digging!
-
is this him in the irish 1911 census? he gives a slightly different age...and he is a widower....

Never mind polishing your glasses I need a brain transplant :-\
I meant to say the death cert of my gt grandfather's mother (gt gt grandmother)!!!

Just an update on this posting I still haven't found a birth record but I have found a Christening Record which states the birth date. Charles Edward Shufflebottom was born on 23rd February 1880.
He was christened in Liverpool in 1884. He had a sister who died in Lisburn, Co Antrim in November 1880 (aged 2). So he must have been there when he was a baby however the census record states that he was born in England and he was always adamant in his lifetime that he was born in Manchester.

Hi there
Just to say I have found the marriage record for Charles Shufflebottom and Mary Chambers !!!
They were married on 11th July 1886 - later than I thought - after they had their children. I found the record on family search I had looked previously and found nothing - just got it this week - just shows how you have to keep digging away. There is a photographic record of the banns and the dates - so exciting! Although I can't find the record on the bmd registers. Also as usual every time you find a piece of new info it throws up more ques than answers - re locations, why they decided to marry then - he died 3 months later.
Just need to find his son's birth certificate now.

Hi Root, hope you are well,
I am new to this, i am a Shufflebottom from Manchester but live in South Africa now, my Grandad was born in 1897 William Shufflebottom, Married my Gran Mrs Elizabeth Speight, what is the best way i search without getting ripped off,
i would like to trace my great grandad, thanks
-
Hi
William Shufflebottom married Elizabeth Speight at St Jude Manchester in 1930.
Do you have any more information about him? Was he born in Manchester? Do you know when and where he died? I have had a quick look for a bith in 1997 and can't see one in Manchester.
I can't find any records for St Jude online so you might need to buy the marriage certificate. I suggest that you start a new thread and ask if anyone could do a look up for you in Manchester.
