Title: Mountsorrel/Queniborough birth query
Post by: jillinderby on Monday 28 September 09 16:11 BST (UK)
I wonder if anyone could help me please? I am trying to trace the birth of my ancestor, John Whittle. I have all the census returns for him which show his place of birth as Mountsorrel. (In 1841 and 1851 he lived in Mountsorrel South). His marriage certificate shows his father's name as also John Whittle.

I have looked on the IGI index and cannot find any entry for him in Mountsorrel. However, there is an entry for a John Whittle born in 1815, father's name John Whittle in Queniborough. I know these two places are fairly close to each other so it is possible, at that time, that Mountsorrel may have come under Queniborough?

Thanks,
Jill

Dear Mike,

Thank you so much for all the information. I forgot to mention that on John Whittle's marriage certificate he had entered his father's profession as a framework knitter. So, unless the one in Queniborough changed his job, I think we can safely rule that one out.

The John Whittle born in 1811 is a strong possibility but the date doesn't tie in. I know we shouldn't put too much emphasis on exact ages when researching family history but he was consistent with his age on his marriage certificate and every census. Also, it seems that the IGI index for Mountsorrel doesn't seem to go beyond 1811. Do you know if there are any parish registers available for after 1811?

I don't know if he had any siblings but on the 1841 census, when he was 25, he was living in Mountsorrel South with Henry Whittle aged 30. Possibly his brother?

Thanks again for all your help.

Jill

ta Mike!!
bit of local info - mountsorrel is a very long village which stretches along what is now the old A6 -Loughborough to leicester (and further). mountsorrel south would then continue into Rothley - the last village before seperate Birstall and leicester outskirts.

That's interesting about the north/south Mountsorrel.  I have a lot of Antills in the village and wondered about the Northend/Southend addresses.  I've currently got two Thomas Antills, both born 1785, one we have baptised 30 Oct in Rothley with his father as Benjamin, the other we have no baptism date (and no father), but the IGI has 23 Oct in Mountsorrel with father Benjamin.  They can't both be sons of Benjamin so one of us is wrong.  There are two Thomas Antills on the 1841 census with different wives and family.  One is at Mountsorrel Northend, the other is at Southend.  So it's clear that the two are separate men rather than the same re-marrying.  Now that I know that the Loughborough library will be closed, I'll ask the local relative to visit the record office in Leicester.
