Hi, I am trying to find our Webb history in Northampton England and beyond. I was given some information a few years ago about my 6th grandparents back their birth places were not listed but their marriage was. I have tried to research both their names and have had no luck finding any information, which has also made me confused about towns and places. JOHN WEBB was born c.1765 where? and died 6th april 1825, he married ANN DICKS born c. 1769 where? the marriage as noted was 1790 at Brington northampton. the only child given at that time was HENRY CHARLES WEBB.
while trying to research the names i did find Charles Webb through the Branson family line and have also discovered over time through LDS site more children of John and Ann but no other information about them. doing internet research in northampton has confused me with little Brington and Great Brington, I cant work out if these are the same place or diffrent, and i have not found any information of these webb being there. I am getting abit lost as to where to keep looking for these relations and was wondering if anyone could possibly help.
I will list here what i have.

The marriage between John Webb bachelor of this parish and Ann Dicks spinster of Brockhall took place at Brington on 6th December 1790. It was by licence.
Just because it says Ann was of Brockhall that only means she was living there at the time of the marriage, it doesn't prove she was born there.
This is Wiki about Brockhall.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brockhall,_Northamptonshire
I haven't got access to baptism registers so I can't help with that.
-
Hi tmisty/jaywit.
Welcome to the Northants boards tmisty. :)
I have the Brockhall baps, yet no Ann Dicks at that time period
or anywhere else (From the Northants Bap Index) either.
Sorry.
Sandy

There is some submitted information on Familysearch, looks like they couldn't find Ann's baptism either.

The Parish Church of Great Brington served Little Brington and Nobottle
besides the above Parish.
The places themselves where/are 3 individual villages.

James Dicks of Brockhall married Martha Bird of Everdon at Everdon on 7th May 1790 by licence.
My record doesn't give their marital status, but Ann's brother maybe?
Joseph Dunckley married Dorcas Clerke, both of Long Buckby at Brockhall on 1st Oct 1752 by licence.
May just turn out to be a relative of Ann.

There is a lot of info on Webbs on Freereg;
Including exact date/witnesses to John Webb and Hannah Stubs marriage.
-
Hi Trish. :)
I think tmisty something is not quite right here or I am in-correct.
I think we are out 10 years on the ages for both Ann and John.
Therefore the baptisms below are possible.
Ann Dix was baptised at Brockhall to
James and Mary on the 8th Mar 1752
John Web was baptised at Church Brampton
to Thomas and Elizabeth on the 4th Feb 1753.

I bet somewhere along the line there was a different vicar at Brockhall who took to spelling the name differently.
Just the Webbs to sort out now.

Over to you jaywit/others with the Webbs.
I am off out for the night. :)

Sandy I can't see an obvious marriage in Northants. There is one possible in Banbury in 1752.
Tomorrow can you look please and see if there are any more baptisms that may be siblings?

HI Jaywit/Tmisty.
Im a bit confused about brockhill? is that also near Brington?
Tmisty here is a link to a map of Northamptonshire
which will show the villages which we think your
relatives come from being very close to each other.
http://uk-genealogy.org.uk/images/maps/Northampton.jpg
Just zoom in and when you see Northampton, look above the
area and you will see Chapel/Church Brampton,
Gt and Lt Brington, Floore and Brockhall are all in the same area.

Last one for now which I hope may help.
If you look at the bottom of my messages you will
see web links to useful sites to assist folk with their
Northamptonshire lineages.
The Northamptonshire Record Office one will take you to
their main site and the link below should allow you to
download a word doc of all church records available,
as many survive.

The information I have quoted is from the original church records.
Let us know if you need more assistance.

Hi Jaywit.
At the moment I can only give information from any personal
information I have regarding baptisms.
I am awaiting confirmation from the copyright editor (provisionally given)
to quote from Alan Clark's baptisms indexes here on Rootschat
as I have Alan's already for the marriages.
When final agreement is given then just like the marriages indexes
we will be able to assist others with a few records at a time,
always referring to the source.
It will, as with the marriages, be yet another brilliant resource.
The dedication of so many Northamptonshire web sites and
Northants folk transcriptions makes tracing our ancestors,
descendants in the County so much easier.

Hi
I think I am trying to follow the same family of WEBBs as tmisty, but my information is somewhat contradictory.
My ancestor is George WEBB, born in 1828 and baptised in Brington on 21/9/1828.
George married Maria ADAMS in London on 3/11/1850. In the 1851 Census they are shown living in Brington and George is listed as "Farmer of 246 Acres Employing 7 Laborers".
George and Maria emigrated to Australia in 1861 with their son, Farndon George WEBB (my great-grandfather). Both died in Brisbane in 1900.
Australian death certificates contain a great deal of information. In the case of George WEBB, his father is listed as "Henry WEBB, farmer" and his mother as "Esther WATSON" and his birthplace as Brington, Northamptonshire. It also lists where he was married and the duration of his marriage.
I found transcriptions of headstones of St Mary the Virgin w St John, Great Brington on the internet (http://www.greatbringtonparishchurch.co.uk/1411.html) for a John and Esther WEBB. The details were:
Esther WEBB died 27 October 1837 aged 51 years, wife of Henry WEBB died 23 March 1841 aged 49 years.
I believe this is the Henry WEBB who was baptised on 20/11/1791 - it matches the details on his son's death certificate (the information was provided by George and Maria's son). I don't think it is the Henry Charles WEBB who married Hannah STUBBS and died in Titchmarsh in 1865.
The WEBB family appear to have suffered more than most with losing children young. Henry and Esther had 12 children, of which my ancestor George was the 11th (and 4th boy), yet he appears to have inherited the family farm. Henry's children, all born in Brington, were:
Mary Ann Watson b. 1813 d. 1838
Harriott b. 1814 d. 1816
Rebecca b. 1814
Matilda b. 1816
John b. 1818 d. 1840
Betsey b. 1819 d. 1838
Henry b. 1821 d. 1822
Esther b. 1822 d. 1822
Helen b. 1824 d. 1838
William b. 1825 d. 1852
George b. 1828, d 1900 in Australia
Henry Robert Watson b. 1830, d 1840
Their fortune did not improve in the next generation - George and Maria ADAMS had 14 children, of which my ancestor Farndon George WEBB was the only one to survive infancy.
I think I am correct in making these connections because it would explain how George WEBB came to be in charge of the family farm in 1851. John WEBB died in 1825, at which point the farm would pass to his eldest son Henry. Henry died in 1841, at which point I assume his 3rd son William would inherit (the older 2 having already died), then on William's death in 1852 it passed to George.
I'm still doing more research on this to see if William married and had any children - maybe George and Maria were only "looking after it" until William's children grew older; or maybe Henry left the farm to George after the two older sons died. I'm looking for a will to help me here, as it really is conjecture.
But I guess the bottom line is that I don't think tmisty's Henry Charles WEBB is the son of John WEBB and Anne DICKS.
I'd be really interested if anyone has any additional information that would shed some light on the contradictions between what I have found and what tmisty has found.
thanks, Linda

Many thanks for the extra information you've provided- it is all helping to tie things together. :)
I had been wondering who the John WYKES, listed as executor of Henry Webb's will, was. I now know. Thanks Sandy.
Do you think I am right in assuming that the Henry WEBB who married Esther WATSON is the son of John WEBB and Anne DICKS?
According to the cemetery transcriptions I found for St Mary the Virgin w St John in Great Brington, they lay buried in 3 grave sites next to each other. It seems logical to assume a close relationship, and why I think tmisty's Henry Charles is not their son.
I'm quite excited at how much information is now available through forums such as this. Now that I am (sort of) retired, I've come back to my family history research with renewed enthusiasm and wonder at how much is available online. I know it is not always reliable, but trying to do research from Australia, it's all I can do. Until I can persuade my husband to move back to the UK (he's a Yorkshireman) for year or two so that I can access primary records. I've been working on the idea for several years, but he hasn't bitten yet.
Once again - many thanks for your help

Northamptonshire is one of the easiest counties to research from afar.
All parish registers (lots of other things too, including wills) which have been deposited at the Northamptonshire Record Office are available on microfiche and/or microfilm can be ordered and viewed inexpensively at any Mormon Family History Centre worldwide.
Australia has more than 100 of these centres, so there may be one near you.
Just go to their website at www.familysearch.org
On the home page down towards the bottom is 'Find a Family History Centre' just enter Australia, and up they come.

Hi again Linda.
I have quite a few records for Great Brington.
Baptisms 1808-1929
Marriages 1754-1994
Burials 1813-1929
Quite willing to list for you full details, if you so require.
Also I took all the graves stones in the Churchyard, lots un-readable
but will also look for any you may not be able to find.
And of course Alan Clark on my web links below offers free look ups
on some on the Northants Indexes.

Hi everyone
Many thanks for all your help - I thought I'd let you know that I think I've resolved the differences between "my" Henry WEBB and tmisty's Henry Charles WEBB (we have had some off-line correspondence).
I spent a bit of time looking for another Henry who could be the one who married Hannah Stubbs in 1810, but I haven't found any obvious candidates in Great Brington. However I did find them in the 1851 Census in Titchmarsh, and also found Henry in the 1861 Census at the same place (when he appeared to have remarried). In both those census returns his birthplace is listed as Denford, Northampton. As this is where his wife was born, and where he married, this seems plausible. I looked up FreeReg and found the baptism of a Henry, son of Henry and Ann Webb, in Denford on 14 June 1789. That fits in with the census info, where birth years tend to move around a bit.
I'm pretty sure the Henry Webb who was born in Great Brington in 1791 belongs to my line, as I believe the family farm passed to him from his father, and then down to his son George who subsequently emigrated to Australia.
I've just had a look at a large scale Atlas and think I have discovered where all the confusion may have arisen. Denford is very close to Titchmarsh, which in turn is only about 7 kms (as the crow flies) from Brington. Great Brington, on the other hand, is about 50 kms away.
So I think this strongly suggests that the Henry of Great Brington born in 1791 is mine, and the Henry of Denford (near Brington) born in 1789 is tmisty's.
Hopefully further research will provide more evidence to support this.
Once again - thanks for the assistance
Linda

Hi Linda.
It is good to see you have been able to confirm the correct Henry.
This link is really helpful for all of the U.K.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/
and for the Brington you mentioned in Hunts.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/HUN/Brington/index.html
There is also a Little Brington and Nobottle who used the same
church at Great Brington for family occasions.
Same as Church Brampton and Chapel Brampton (where
I went to School years ago) where folk also went to Church Brampton
to baptise, marry and be buried.
I guess to Australia they must seem very small places. :)
If we can do any more look ups for you, just ask. :)
