Title: Help to find details for Mary
Post by: Lincsbabe on Saturday 26 September 09 19:49 BST (UK)
I have a Great Aunt Mary Lee born Whitehaven Cumberland in 1884. She emigrated to Canada. The only info I have is that on 1911 census she has already gone from the UK  The family story tells that she met a young Canadian chap and eventually married him. I have no name for him and have been unable to find a marriage for her in the UK, so I am assuming she married in Canada. I have also been unable to find Mary on any passenger lists.I understand that Mary sadly died either in child birth or shortly after the birth of her child a girl called Beatrice. There is family suggestion that they were in BC Canada.
I do have a letter written in the 194o's from Beatrice giving an address of  North Road New Westminster. I understand this address no longer exists.I
Would be VERY grateful for anything anybody could come up with for me. Thanks in advance

Hi Lincsbabe

Is this her birth registration - with a middle name?

FreeBMD
Mary Louisa LEE - Sep Qtr 1884 Whitehaven

The letter written in the 1940's - do you have a more precise year &  was it written in an adult tone and hand?
Are there any clues however small in the letter, about the writer's family etc?

From Googling, it would appear North Road, New Westminster BC still exists - is it a more precise house address on that road that is no longer there?

Cheers
AMBLY

This isn't of any help to you, but just to keep your spirits up, don't give up hope!  My grandfather's parents emigrated to Canada in the 1870's with their 7 chldren, they returned to Liverpool fairly soon, leaving the eldest daughters in Canada as they had married there.  I had no idea what any of the married names were, the only clue I had was a photograph of my grandfather with one of his sisters and her husband, and a half written letter that had been left by his bed when he died in 1921, addressed to 'Dear Polly' at Westminster Road Toronto.  A couple of years ago I saw a message on the ancestsry message board enquiring about a Mary Pritchard born in Liverpool the same year as his sister, so I emailed, and sure enough it was one of her descendents!  This was confirmed by our exchanging copies of photographs where she was wearing the same dress as in my photo, and a Toronto census showing the famly living in Westminster Road.  Just keep on looking, the information is out there someplace.

Hi Lincsbabe,

Here is a link to search BMD's in BC.

http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-6ED642/gbsearch/Marriages

There were 39 marriages that came up with "Mary Lee" between 1872 and 1933.

Also on a side note, there were 22 "Beatrice's" born in New Westminster btwn 1872 and 1903.

Hi Lincsbabe,

Do you know Mary's parents' names?

I found a marriage registration in Ontario for a Louisa Mary Lee, b 1884, daughter of Fred Lee and Lizzie Porter, to Alex Thos Cauchard.  Marriage took place in York on May 31, 1905.

Could this be your Mary?  If you would like more information, pm your email address to me and I'll send you the image.

The only Mary Lee born about 1885 in Whitehaven I could see on the 1891 and 1901 England census was the daughter of Joseph and Catharine Lee.

The Free BMD has a marriage for a Mary L. Lee in Whitehaven, Cumberland that was registered in 4th quarter of 1911 (vol 10b, p 1205). The two men on the same page had the surnames Hodgson and Hudson. There is a death for a Mary Louisa Hodgson in Coquitlam, BC dated 18 Aug 1973. Her age is a couple years off but not too much as she was 86 when she died which would be a birth year of about 1887.

I only searched the index of the 1911 England census entering Mary Lee, born 1885 +/- 2 years and born in Whitehaven and there was one match in the results (it indicated institution, not household or vessel). Have you eliminated this Mary as being yours?

The Toronto Public Library could possibly look up (for free-if you are out of country) Under the surname, and various years to see where if so they moved to.  Their email address is:  torontopubliclibrary.ca
the address is 228 Roncesvalles Ave, Toronto, M6R 2L7, The Library is located about 2 blocks from Westminster Ave.--The is no Westminster Road listed for all of Toronto.  Their phone number is area code 416-393-7671.Hope you are able to get some help from them.

Not sure why Lincsbabe  isn't responding, but sometimes a large spike in rootschat users online can cause notification to turn off...so have p.m. 'd ...Don't know if it's correct but good sleuthing jacquie!!
This would have to be the marriage March quarter of 1880  in Whitehaven dist.  vol. 10b  p. 745
Catherine BLENKINSOP and  Joseph Wellington Lee
If that is Catherine Blenkinsop in 1861 as age 11 then she's removed a decade or so from her age, so creative math may run in the family ;D ( she says she was only just BORN in 1861 on the 1881)

ankerpep_52 , welcome to rootschat, note that Beccavblack is not the thread owner, but just making a comment.
Beccavblack...welcome to rootschat as well!  J.J.

Gosh folks thanks for the replies. It was nearly a year ago since I posted my request.
I will now try to keep abreast of any developments.

Yes the parents of my Mary Lee are Joseph Lee and Catherine (Blenkinsop) from Whitehaven.. I have been told by my Aunt since my original post that Mary married someone in England and was widdowed quickly (no name for this chap) probably why I couldn't find Mary Lee on any passenger lists. Her year of birth is @1885. The last view of her is on 1901 census at age 16. Interestingly enough. I recently glimpsed her on the 1911 aged 26 but she had been crossed off., she was listed as being in service and still single.   I don't have access to the 1911 , so have been unable to see if she was listed anywhere else. I wondered if she had been listed by mistake by the person who filled in the form. I have tried to see if the 2 surnames for marriages that looked as though they may fit but couldn't tie them in aith a death for the spouse, I couldn't tie any of the 2 surnames either on any passenger lists.  Lincsbabe  PS I have turned my notifier back on thanks Guys  :-[ :-[

well there is this death...sad  (is he too young to be the right fellow? He'd have only been 18 at date of marriage)
Deaths March Q. 1918 Richard Hodgson   age 25 / Whitehaven vol. 10b p.843

but also a marriage ( but this would have had her already pushing 40, but not  impossible)
Marriages March Q. 1923
Hodgson Mary L  to a William Milburn /  Whitehaven / vol. 10b p. 965

Hi Richard Hodgson sounds as though it might fit, it certainly would tie in with an earlier marriage, though as far as I am aware Mary didn't have any other names...according to my dad and Aunt LOL!!. I have been trying to post the letter from Beatrice and her photo but am rapidly running out of time as I have to go to work in a few minutes. I will try again tomorrow. with that.Lincsbabe ;D

There actually is a Milburn family in New Westminster...Was looking for a CEF signup but couldn't see one for this age... Both or one of the BMD finds could be just a red herring...I added more to the above reply while you were posting re: ages

p.s. jacquie proved who the parents were, and found the only possible birth as Mary Louisa reply #5

Sorry it was AMBLY who found the  birth

Well go figure there is a Mary MILBURN 1887  left in 1923 from Liverpool  to Saint John NB a William also on board.. If you get a sub to see if they are travelling together & where they are headed .... or perhapssomeone can look it up for you... ( please don't start a new thread for a request)

Note this still may be a red herring/coincidence...proof is always needed before hanging one's hat on any information

Hi

I found a Form 30A for Mary Louise Milburn travelling from London to St. John, NB in July 1923 aboard the Montcalm.

Mary is 36, accompanied by husband William Milburn.  Mary states she has never been in Canada before and intends to reside permanently in Canada.  They are destined for Brandon, Manitoba.

Mary's nearest relative in the UK is her mother, Mrs. Katherine Lee, #1 Rosemary Lane, Whitehaven.

On the ship's manifest, it shows Mary is a housewife and William is an engineer.

On his Form 30A, William states he is 40, his intended occupation is Railway employee, his birthplace was Whitehaven, Cumberland, his citizenship is Canadian.  He has lived in Canada before at 327 18th or 8th St., Brandon, MB.  Previous port of entry was Quebec on 10-8-1920 (I think...year is smudged); departed Canada from St. John, NB, Dec 12, 1922; reason...holiday after married.  His nearest relative is his brother, John R. Milburn, in Brandon, MB.

This looks like it could just be your Mary!!

Here's the link to the Manitoba Vital Statistics index

http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php

A search for Mary Milburn will turn up a death in October 1923.

A search in the marriages will turn up a marriage for William Milburn in 1925.

Great Susan! Well, how do you like them apples...a little sleuthing on all our parts can go a long way...We have a last name, but the lady is likely living so we need to tread lightly on the privacy laws...Probably won't find a marriage though as she must have just been born then...

One other little tidbit I've found....

If you search the BC death registrations on pilot.familysearch.org there is a death in 1966 for a gentleman who just might be the spouse of Mary's daughter.  Is it okay to give this info....I haven't mentioned names??

There's something very satisfying about putting all these puzzle pieces together!!

Great job everyone!!

Yes please Susano. ;D ;D I have known for years I have living family out there and I am now perhaps 1 step closer to finding out more about them. Beatrice gave a fair bit of info about her family in her letter. My Mary had 2 brothers that also emigrated to the USA but I have managed to track there whereabouts. My Mary was always the Elusive one ;D Lincsbabe

Susan, because he has passed away you can put the full information up! We just have to be careful due to privacy laws, not to put full forenames of the living. We can use a first initial and last names though...This is for the Canada board, not sure if this applies on other boards, where  privacy laws are not so tight. J.J.

edited for spelling

I just wanted to give to give everybody that has contributed to this thread an update.

I have eventually got the many pieces of information for me able to put the pieces together the bigger picture. I am so pleased to be able to tell everybody that i am now in contact with living family in Canada.

last month I had a message from a lady called Dilo who helped me with the last few pieces. I now know where my lady Mary is laid to rest and what happenned to her daughter Beatrice. Dilo offered to forward an e mail from me to tree owners on Ancestry and within 12 hours I was contacted by them. I now have loads of info and photos which my dad and his sisters will be thrilled about when I am able to share them. Beatrice is the cousin they always knew existed but knew nothing about.
Thankyou to everybody that helped me on this thread. Best wishes Lincsbabe
