Hello Robert
My great-grandfather is:
EDWARD J. ETTRIDGE, b. 19 Mar 1880, Whitechapel, Mile End New Town
so I'd be interested in any info you have.
I haven't done any research in ages, so I can't remember what I have that would be of help to you, but I'll have a look to see how far it goes back. It sounds like you have a lot more than me.

Hi bertee
Welcome to Rootschat too ;D
Until each of you has made 3 posts you won't be able to use the personal message sysyem to exchange information which may be of a personal or sensitive nature.
In the meantime please do not post details of personal email addresses which is one of Rootschat policies.
It may be helpful to read this if you haven't already

It's one of many useful pages in our 'help' section.
Also have a look at the guides at the top of the London & Middlesex boards

Thanks for the heads-up, Dawn.
Hello Robert and Rob. Welcome to Rootschat. And thanks for getting in touch.
The Thomas Ettridge born 26 April 1817 is my great x3 great-uncle.
I descend from his brother, my great x3 grandfather, William Ettridge (5 Aug 1824-8 Jul 1922) and then by his daughter, Caroline Ettridge (born 26 Apr 1864), who married Hezekiah Guest (9 Jan 1864-16 Mar 1956) on 30th November 1885 at St Peter's Bethnal Green.
I've got Thomas Ettridge's parents as Thomas Ettridge (baptised Holborn St Andrew's 7 Nov 1796) and Rebecca Edwards (b. c. 1796, m. 15 Apr 1811 at St Leonard's Shoreditch).
They had 11 children:
Lydia (12 May 1812)
James (1 Aug 1813
Elizabeth (13 Nov 1814)
Mary (6 Mar 1816)
Thomas (26 Apr 1817)
Eliza (18 Dec 1818)
Elisabeth (c. 1821 - or is this the same as the 1818 Eliza?)
William (5 Aug 1824)
Rebecca (c.1826)
Mary Ann (2 Apr 1827)
Edward (3 Oct 1829)
Going back beyond the 1796 Thomas Ettridge is less certain, though his baptism on the IGI gives his parents as Thomas & Susanna Etridge.
The IGI has a marriage of a Thomas Etheridge to Susannah Jones 2 Sep 1790 in Goodrich, Herefordshire. This is the only marriage of Thomas Ettridge & Susanna between 1754 and 1794 currently on the IGI. But it needs further research to check if this might be the right Thomas & Susannah.
I hadn't got Thomas' death, not the 1861 census (though I've got them on the 1851, also at 35 Reform Place) there are a few details I've missed, so thanks for those. But we should take this offline - not least as in-depth discussion will be tedious for non-relations!
As Dawn says, you'll need to make a few more posts before you can use the private message function so we can exchange details to share further information - you could just add a few replies to this thread, I suppose, though that'd be "cheating the system"! I'll see if I can send you a PM with my email address.

By my calculations, we're 5th cousins. ;D

Hi.
Thanks for the quick reply.
At a quick glance it looks as if you have hit the same 'brick wall' that I have.
It would be great to have contact over this. Are you a member of The East of London FHS? or the Society of Genealogists? We may be able to make contact that way.

1. THOMAS3 ETRIDGE was born 26 Apr 1817 in Shoreditch and died 22 May 1884 in Haggerston. He married ELIZABETH BROOKS 11 Apr 1841 in St John the Baptist, Hoxton, daughter of GEORGE BROOKS and ANN ?.
Sorry I can't connect to my email just at the moment, so will have to reply here and hope you see it, Robert.
Edit: now sent you an email, but will fill in the details here for other passing Ettridges ...
I've been looking at the London parish records now available on Ancestry and came across this baptism at Lambeth St Mary's:
October 14 1821, Elizabeth Martha daughter of George & Elizabeth Durance (at a pinch it could say Susana, but I'm pretty sure it's Durance) Brook, Residence: St Mary Newington, Quality/Trade/Profession: Brush Maker.
On the same page, there's a William Brook baptised the same day to the same parents.
The Newington residence fits with the 1861 census, and George's occupation matches that on the marriage record. What do you think?
I've not been able to find the Shoreditch St Leonard baptism to which you refer, unfortunately. What's George's occupation on that?
There's a marriage at Lambeth St Mary's of a George Brook and Elizabeth Durance Husband on 4th October 1818.
The clincher for me is a second marriage of Elizabeth Durance Brook to a Thomas Nicholl at St Mark’s Shoreditch 9 Feb 1857. One of the witnesses at that wedding is Elizabeth Ettrige.

The grandfather of Edward J. Ettridge (1880) was my 2nd great grandfather. Edward J. Ettridge was the great grandson of Thomas Etridge, born about 1796, which is as far back as I have gone with any certainty. We may need to communicate outside of Rootschat if you would like more information (I do have quite a lot). If you are a member of the Society of Genealogists they may agree to forward a letter.

Hello Robert
Now that you have made 3 posts you can exchange personal email addresses on the personal message system with Aulus.
It may be more convenient to carry on your discussions that way.
