i'm totally stuck and ANY help, links ANYTHING would be very very much appreciated-i just don't know where to start-other than google and ancestry and both of those are throwing up nothing :(
Right *deep breath* my half auntie is looking for information on her father...my nan has told be a few things but she's old so i'm not sure...it's taken here 50 odd years to tell us so i'm going on this(we have a very disjointed family ::) )
my aunt was born (i think!) in 1952, her fathers name is Tony O'Brien he was born in Ireland, apparently ???
He was allegedly a 'big band' member...nan seems to recall he was a singer...and went by the name Tony Hill.
she knows NOTHING else...well anything that she is willing to share anyway...i've tried looking for Anthonys instead of tonys but nothing...any one know anything about the big bands of this time?
any guidance AT ALL is appreciated...i don't even know how old he was :( my nan was about 19.
thanks loads in advance :)

I'd imagine ye Nan's maiden and / or surname would help, for a start? ;)

Hi Kneller,
we have to tread very carefully here as not to mention anybody who is living(rootschat policy)
We do not need to mention your half aunty by name but from were I am looking she has to obtain a copy of her birth certificate.
you have your aunts name, gran,s name pos date of birth and place of birth and fathers name so it should be relatively straight forward.
Always best to go backwards from you and I recon aunty,s birth certificate is the next step.
Regards,Billy.

You should be able to find you aunts birth reference on the search engine you are using - this would give you a mothers maiden name and birth certificate and then you could narrow down a possible marriage certificare to look at...or was the faimily a bit more complicated than that??? :)

no father listed...already tried this route...also my aunt was then adopted by her uncle and his wife...
so yes my family is very very complicated :(
thanks for the advice tho :)
-
also they were not married it was a 'onenight stand' ::) :o

"she knows NOTHING else...well anything that she is willing to share anyway..."
Well, it sounds as though she's not that desperate to find out ?
-
that's my nan the above quote my auntie IS desperate to find out...time is running out she fears, she's been searching for 20 years :( and my nan has only just returned to the UK and got in touch with family....
but it this way, she didn't want kids and my dad was left at 5 to be raised by his paternal grandparents and father...i'm 28 and i've met my nan about 8 times!!! ::) >:(

Hi Kneller 1980.
I can see why your thread started argh!
I thought I had brick wall but you have got the Berlin Wall! here .
Even the Berlin wall came down.
We will try to chip at the bricks,
I hope your aunt gets the answers she is looking for.

Thank you so much for the words of inspiration Billy...
I spoke to my nan last night and apparently...the dance hall he worked at was near richmond road in London...this came under Kingston when i googled...she said she worked in a hotel near there at the time.
and that is all...i've googled 50s clubs for that area and all i got was the regal cinema...doesn't state whether it was a dancehall in that period.
apparently her mother(my GR N) said that he was emigrating to South America...convenient this?! ::) as apparently in the 70's he came looking for them!
it's sooooo frustrating :(

Frustrating maybe! but a possible book in the making.
Can you imagine how fascinating is will be for generations to come to read what you are finding out.
You have got me hooked!
Billy.
