Title: Fairey mystery girls
Post by: Gillg on Friday 25 September 09 10:15 BST (UK)
Minnie and Annie Fairey appear in the 1881 census RG11 1395/43/51, living in White Horse Cottages, Enfield, Middx.  Minnie is 17 and was born in Sawbridgeworth, Herts.  Annie is 19 and was born in Parndon, Essex.  Annie is head of the house and they are both Jute Drawers.

I can't find Minnie's birth, not even under one of the Fairey/Fairy/Farey/Feary variants.  She should have been born around 1864, if the 1881 is correct.  Nor can I find Annie's birth.  I do know that Minnie (spelled Fairy) married George Littlefield in Mar Q 1883 in Edmonton.

Could someone please help me to find these girls with their parents in 1871 or give me a helping hand in tracing them?

Have ye tried looking at the bottom of the garden?  ;D

(I'm sorry. It was so obvious that Someone had to say it!  :P)

I think Annie and Minnie are their day to day names but their 'Sunday' names were Harriett and Lavinia.

If you look at the 1871 census you see these Farey girls in Enfield with parents, siblings, in-laws and nephew/niece - Reference RG10; Piece: 1344; Folio: 96; Page: 34

Their places of birth and ages fit your Annie and Minnie (Great Parndon and Sawbridgeworth).

On that basis, Lavinia's birth record is in Vol 3a p 198 Q3 1864 and Harriet's is Vol 4a p 62 Q4 1861.

As a member of the Fairey family I've had to put up with a lot worse than that in my lifetime! ;D ;D

Well found indeed!  I would never have thought of those names being related.  I don't have access to the 1871 census, however, so would be really grateful if you could give me the full details of the entry there for them and their relatives.  Interesting to see the Farey spelling.

Curiously the second Lavinia also born Q3 1864, but registered in Huntingdon, is actually my relative.  Lavinia/Minnie doesn't seem to be, unless I recognise her parents' names.

Thanks again

Gillg

Thanks so much, kennyg!  That's really helpful, as it indicates that this family is not related to mine, unless the link is a few generations back.

Hi Gill, do you have Minnie's marriage details?

Minnie and George married at St Andrews, Enfield, March 25 1883, both aged 20, both of Enfield. George is a labourer. George's father is George Littlefield. Minnie's is Jame Fairey. Both are labourers. George signs; Minnie makes her mark.  Witnesses are George D Linzell, and Harriet Kellett [X]

Harriet Farey married William Kellet June 19 1881, also at St Andrew, Enfield. He was 21, and a labourer; she was 19. Both of Enfield.  William's father is Edward Kellett, labourer. Harriet's father is James Farey, sawyer. William signs; Harriet makes her mark. Witnesses are George Littlefield and Fanny Kellett.

(I know you don't really need this, but it makes it clearer who Minnie is   :)  )

Every little helps, as they say, Galium.  ;)  And I may well find a connection with these Fareys at some point, so I shall squirrel it all away with my strays.

This all started when I made contact with a GR member with a Minnie Fairey, because I also had one.  He'll be interested to hear about what we think is his Minnie, I'm sure.

Thanks for your interest.

Gillg  :)

p.s. How did you find out all that information?  Did you have access to the parish records?

Here are another few Faireys from 1871 though spelled Feary.

Hi Yorkslass

Now this is a family I do know.  Coxe Feary 1759-1822 was a famous Hunts Baptist preacher, and this is one of his descendants, born c1823.  The appearance of Annie and Minnie in this family is rather tempting, I must admit.  Just looked at the dates above again and am thinking that Coxe jnr was probably a grandson, rather than a son.

I have all these forenames in my Fairey ancestors, apart from Coxe, but the two families aren't related, as far as I can see.

Thanks for this information.

Hi there
I am a descendant of George D Linzell of Enfield, would have been abt 26 in 1883, did you find any info on how/if he is related to any of the named persons? Thanks in advance! :)

Hi Elfern
I'm afraid I don't have any more information about George Linzell, but there is someone on Genes Reunited who has his name in her/his tree.  Are you a member of GR? Maybe you are the one on GR!  If you aren't, I can try to put you in touch with her/him.
