Looking for any possible baptism in Dorset for Edward Stoodley:
At present we have:
1759 servant to George Clavell Esq in Kimmeridge.
1764 Married Mary Ramson in Church Knowle (witnesses Robert Cooper, Christopher Pike)
3 children - Edward, John & Mary baptised in Swanage
1789 Edward (Innkeeper of Herston nr Swanage) dies.
I cannot see a suitable baptism for him on the Isle of Purbeck (through Dorset OPC). Hoping that a smart Rootschatting sleuth can spot him.
Thanks

He sounds like one of mine - a complete life but arrived from Mars. Have you seen the Probate Record -
Stoodley, Edward
Text: Stoodley, Edward, Swanage 45 1789
Book: Burialls (Burial)
Collection: Dorset: - Wills and Administrations

MarionH - Yes, I have a copy of the will. It doesn't give any clues as to where he was from though, unfortunately.

Hi,
I have some info:
Edward Stoodley baptised 17th July 1743-illegitimate son of Elizabeth Collins, reputed Winterborne Whitechurch, Dorset. (This is just as it was recorded)
Father Edward Stoodley born at Milton Abbas.
Think this is probably him,
Regards.

Paco - I'm amazed. Definitely a good candidate for him.
Did Edward (an Innkeeper) and Elizabeth marry ?
There is a document in the Dorset RO relating to this which also mentions a Daniel Stoodly (mason of Wimborne).
Wondered whether you might have anything else for Edward (the father) or Daniel.
Many Thanks

The subject of this thread is a known relative. Lets refer to him as 5xGGFather.
How many pieces of circumstantial evidence are required to equal a fact?
Here's my case:-
1. Ed (Milton Abbas) is an Innkeeper 1743
Ed(5xGGFather) in an Innkeeper in 1766
2. Ed(5xGGFather) is married in Church Knowle (next to Corfe Castle), come from Kimmeridge (next to
Corfe Castle) on the marriage register, and lives all his life in Swanage (next to Corfe Castle). Sarah
Keats, second wife of Ed (Milton Abbas) comes from Corfe Castle. She is charged with supporting Ed
(G'son of Milton Abbas) in Ed's(Milton Abbas) will (1744).
3. Ed(Milton Abbas) has son Ed - G'son Ed - GG'son Ed. This 4 Edward Stoodleys in a row. Edward
does not seem a very common name for Stoodleys in the early 18th century.
4. Ed(5xGGFather) marries in 1765. A baptism in 1743 would be about the right age.
Therefore Ed(5xGGFather) = Ed(G'son Milton Abbas)
What do you think? ???

I have found a few more Stoodley's, but not sure if they are yours or not;
1) Daniel Stoodley married Fanny Nossiter in Beaminster, Dorset on the 23rd October 1831.
2) Daniel Stoodley was buried 3rd June 1756 aged 22years-b.1734 approx. Winterbourne St Martin.
3) Edward Stoodley b.6th March 1795 son of Elizabeth and Edward Stoodley-Corfe Castle.
regards.

Hi Paco,
Good catch on Edward son of Elizabeth Collins.
1. I'm pretty sure this Dan is not one of ours.
2. This Dan would have been about 10 when he was named on a bastardry bond with Edward in1743. unlikely I think.
3. This Edward I knew about. He is the son of GG'Son above. So that actually makes 5 in a row. I believe he was 1 of 12. :-[
What do you think of my thinking above.

VB - Ref 5xGGF evidence. Agree with you entirely with your thoughts here.
Just to clarify:
Ed (Milton Abbas) - Innkeeper 1743 Daniel (Wimborne) - Mason 1743 - presume brothers
Ed (5GGF) bapt 17/07/1743 illeg. son of Elizabeth Collins (of Winterbourne Whitechurch). Was the baptism in Milton Abbas or Winterbourne W ?). Some doubt as to father (whether Ed or Dan) - but believed to be Ed.
Ed (Milton Abbas) m 1 ?? m 2 Sarah Keats (from Corfe Castle). Where did the marriages take place?
Ok from Ed (5GGF) from this point.

I believe that Elizabeth Collins was from Winterbourne Whitechurch, and also that the baby was baptised there. It definitely says Father Edward Stoodley. It was quite unusual for an illegitimate child to be given the Father's surname at this time, but possibly he was already married to someone else.
However the info. is on the full version of findmypast.com, and the info came originally from the Dorset Family History Society.
regards Paco.
