Title: Death entry query?
Post by: lindsayH on Monday 21 September 09 01:42 BST (UK)
Hi all.

I have located the death entry for my G Grandmaother, Sarah Ann Hyde (1857, Fairfield) being Sept 1928, Chapel -le-frith 7b 704 and I have also located her death being registered under the surname of 'Proctor', ie Proctor, Sarah, Chapel-le-frith, 7b 704. Sarah's mother's maiden name was Hannah 'Proctor', but Hannah's husband Thomas Hyde (1855, Macclesfield) died in 1869 when Sarah was abt 12.

Why would there be two registered surnames for the same person?? I am very confident that these entries are for the same person ,my G grandmother.

It is interesting to note that Sarah Ann Hyde had 3 children all out of wedlock. Richard (1898) who was registered with the surname 'Proctor' on his birth cert but used the 'Hyde' surname until his death, Edith (1878) not sure about,  and George (1886) who used the surname 'Proctor' all of his life. I am note clued up to who the real father was of my Grandfather Richard (1898) and hence my surname lineage, but I suspect he may have been Sarah Ann's cousin Francis Proctor (1855).

A conundrum if anyone is willing to help me sort out from Australia!

Regards.

Lindsay

This doesn't answer your death entry query (although I suspect her death may have been entered in both names she was known as)

Edith Proctor seems to be the daughter of Jonathan Proctor and Hannah ??

1891 they lived in Cheshire
Jonathan was b Manchester lancs and hnnah in Stoney Middleton Derbys - on 1891 census they had 9 children living with them???

Or do you have different information????

I think Lindsay's Edith is listed as HYDE in 1891, along with her mother Sarah and brother George - they are living with Sarah's cousin, Francis PROCTOR.  (RG12/2779; Folio 100A; Page 39)

Thanks for your replies.....

The Edith I am linked to is the Edith Hyde mentioned by Manchester Rambler....living with her mother Sarah and brother George in 1891 and also Sarahs' cousin Francis Proctor.....Francis Proctor being the link I think to fathering George and Sarahs' 3rd child and my grandfather Richard (1898).

So would it be normal practice to list a deceased person by both names she may have been know as on the death indexes?? Shd I get a copy of the death cert to clarify do you think? I am anovice at this and trying to make the most from Australia.

Thakns for your help.

Yes - If a person changed their name (other than by marriage), or was known by more than one name, it should be shown on the death certificate - something along the lines of "Mary SMITH, otherwise JONES".  In that case, the death would be indexed under both surnames.

It certainly sounds as though Edith used both surnames HYDE and PROCTOR.
