Hello everyone
Thankyou for allowing me to join.
Well I am after any information that is out there on a Edward Mallowes born approx 1868 in London, England, came to Australia, married had 4 children and then took his 2 oldest children and moved to New Zealand and started a whole new life.
If you can help with any information on Edward and family please get back to me.
Midsummer

HI
Are you wanting to go forwards with Edward or Back through his parents. If so who were Edwards parents?
Wendy
-
Hi Midsummer,
Welcome to Rootschat :)
To help you we need a little more info.
Mallowes is not a very common name on English Census entries.
It appears Edward died in NZ in 1958 aged 90 8)
Edward MALLOWES, 1958/36512
Do you have the death cert?
What info does it contain?
Did he marry in Australia? What State?
Do you have info from Marriage Cert?
Trish :)

There is an Edward MALLOS on the 1871 English census, born abt 1868 TURNHAM GREEN, MIDDLESEX LONDON.
He is living with his family in WATFORD, HERTFORDSHIRE. Father is listed as Charles MALLOS labourer aged 26 birth year abt 1845 place Be NORFOLK. Mother as Julia born abt 1846 TURNHAM GREEN, MIDDLESEX LONDON.
Siblings are Henry MALLOS who appears to be a twin, also born 1868 TURNHAM GREEN, MIDDLESEX LONDON and Mary Anne MALLOS born abt 1871 TURNHAM GREEN, MIDDLESEX.
Does this sound like your Edward?
-
Excellent Sunshine :)
Most of the Mallowes seem to be from Norfolk originally.
Possible Marriage;
Charles MALLOWS
December 1868, Kensington, 1a 69
On same page Julia LAKE
There is no birth 1864-1870 for a Edward Mallowes, even with soundex, but there are several possibilities for Edward Lake.

Thankyou everyone for your replies
But at this present time I would like any information on his birth, parents, siblings and any information on his immigration to Australia.
I have found all of the information I need on Edward Mallowes after his arrival in Australia and his move to New Zealand.
So thanks again

HI
Do you have any paperwork that would give us at least his dads name. Maybe from a marriage cert?
Wendy
-
Hi
And what were the names of those two oldest children that you know he took to NZ?
All these answers will help someone to narrow down the list of possibles even allowing for mistransciptions.
Wendy
-
Further to the 1871 Census information from Sunshine the image shows name as MALLOW.
I have found the following births on BMD
Edward and Henry the Twins
Mar 1868 Brentford 3a 90
MELLOR Edward
MELLOR Henry
And Mary Ann who was 7 months on 1881 Census
MELLER Mary Ann Sep 1870 Brentford 3a 107
I don't know if this helps at all or confuses, perhaps they couldn't spell!
Who did Edward marry, was it in before they emigrated?
Regards
Robert

Hello everyone
Thank you for your replies, because I am new to this could you please tell me, do I reply to each message or do it in one go, so for the moment I will give it in one go.
As I said in my first question: Edward Mallowes was born approx 1868 in London.
Do not know anything more on his parents, birth date, other siblings and also when he came to Australia.
Would like any information that you have on Edward's birth, parents, siblings and when he came to Australia.
He married in 1889 had 4 children.
I believe he left with the 2 oldest children - Jane Ellen born 1889 and Charles Edward born 1891 (both born in Victoria, Australia) and turned up in New Zealand.
Would like any information that you have on their arrival in New Zealand.
Will get back to you with more information that I have on Edward Mallowes

HI Midsummer
Do as you have done just answer what you can in one post.
I look forward to reading more abt Edward.
Wendy
-
Hi Midsummer,
Dont worry we were all new to this at one time.
Just answering in one post is fine.
To find the right Edward we need parents names. Australian Marriage certs are excellent with info contained in them.
You can download his marriage cert on this site;
http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/CA2574F700805DE7/page/Historical+research?OpenDocument&1=60-Historical+research~&2=~&3=~
It will be worth it I am sure :)
Trish
-
How do you know that Edward was born circa 1868 in London?
-
HI
I can answer that for you on Midsummer's behalf - there is a New Zealand death index with his name on it and one for his son whose name was mentioned earlier. As usual age at death gave an estimate of 1868 for his birth year.
Wendy
-
Hi Winston :),
Yes, you are correct there.
I put his age of death on a earlier posting of mine.
But his age depends on who gave info at death.
All the certs need to be purchased. As we all know it is important to establish as many facts as we possibly can.
Cheers,Trish
-
Hi Midsummer
I have a contact who was able to obtain the particular marriage cert Midsummer if would like a copy of it please send me a PM
Looks like two of our posters got you Edwards family spot on.
Info from Marriage cert shows Edwards parents were indeed Charles Mellowes and Jane Lake
Wendy

You are a gem Wendy :) ;D

Here is Edward,aged 3
1871 Census
St Albans Road, Downes Yards,

Julia, 25, wife, mar, born Middlesex, Turnham Green
Edward,3, son, born Turnham Green

HI
I wonder whether the full famliy took roots to Victoria/Australia as I can't seem to see any of them on the later census.
Can any of you?
I'm going to post a snippet of the marriage cert in my next message as there is a portion of it that I am struggling to read -
The type written text reads as "by law required (and with the written consent of)
What is the word that comes after to give consent in cases of ???? of the Bridegroom
Can anyone read it?
Wendy

heres the image in relation to my above request

Does the NZ death index also give p.o.b?
-
Hi toni
sadly not
-
Minority, maybe she was under age.
-
he was 20 and she was 19
-
Was the marriage age 21 then in Victoria?
-
it must've been
???
-
I am pretty sure it was.
Maybe this should be linked to Australian Board as maybe they did all come to Australia.
Trish
-
i'm struggling to understand then how you know he was born in London
-
Hi Tony,
Maybe Sunshine does have the Victorian Marriage Cert or someone gave her the info?.
Australian certs contain a wealth of info.
My g/g/grandfather, born Norfolk, married in Melbourne, Aust in 1869.
From this I got his parents full names and POB. His death cert in NZ only said Norfolk and Fathers name.
Hopefully Midsummer will come back on-line to enlighten us.
Cheers,
Trish
-
Thank you everyone
I will answer by member:-
Trish I do not have parents names.
Toni It states it on his marriage certificate that I have.
Winston You are so right there.
Wendy I have that information on Edward's death, thank you.
Trish I have a copy of marriage certificate when Edward married my
Grandmother Jane Ellen Bradley.
If anyone there can get information on Edward's arrival in New Zealand - as to dates and who arrived in New Zealand with Edward that would be terrific.
Also if you could also find his departure from England and his arrival in Australia, because I dont be able to find anything on my Edward.
So thanks again everyone
Midsummer
-
Wendy
Sorry for the delay in reply about Marriage Certificate. That would be terrific if you can send me a copy. My copy was the original but it was water damaged and quite a bit of information has been lost.
So thanks again.
-
Hi everyone again
Thank you so much for what you have found on my Edward Mallowes.
So could you please tell me what is the correct spelling for his name, because I have been given 2 spellings - MALLOWES, MALLOWS the second MALLOWS is the spelling on my fathers Birth Extract.

HI Everyone who has an interest in ths thread
Since Edward was in NEW ZEALAND I went looking on a New Zealand newspapers Website called papers past which is free to view.
On that site they have the most wonderful readup of the Divorce between Edward and Jane Ellen in which it mentions a sister of Edward.
Take a look on the newspaper site its wonderful to read it all. If you enter your search term in the Exact Phrase box you'll find abt 6 mentions of charles's bankruptcy and again for Edwards divorce read them all as I cant remember which one gives the most info regarding the divorce that is.
I then gleaned this info from the NZ BMDs page
So I think I can conclude that Charles and Julia took the children to New Zealand sometime as early as 1872/73 as Charles is mentioned as been Bankrupt over in NZ in the years of 1873/74.
They had a daughter called Flora/Florence in 1877 she later married a John hardy in 1895
Henry, Edwards brother married in 1888 to an Elizabeth Edith Webb
There is a marriage for Mary Ann Mallowes in 1893 to a William Smith
Wendy
-
Wendy
Thank you for the information on Edwards divorce to Jane (I already had that information so thank you).
You mentioned some dates in 1870 plus about Charles and Julie (I am sorry I do not know these people) they are not my Charles because he was born nearly 20 years later, so are you telling me that there are other MALLOWES who moved to New Zealand before my Edward.
Thanks again

HI Midsummer
I've sent on the copy of the marriage cert to you.
To clarify for you Midsummer, Charles Mallowes and Jane Mallowes nee Lake are Edwards parents therefore making them Charles Edward Mallowes grandparents.
Charles and Jane upstick from England and all arrive in New Zealand at least by Dec 1873 as is evident in this newspaper link. You'll have to scroll down to his name as there are cases before his
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=WI18740423.2.10.1&srpos=77&e=-------10--71----2%22mallowes%22-all
If link not worked then go to paperspast via Google and enter under exact search just the surname of Mallowes then you'll have to go through the list of results till you find one titled Bankruptcy sitting April23 1874 that the juicy one which confirms that family details of when and how they arrived in NZ.
Wendy
-
Hi
If you follow this link
http://www.wellington.govt.nz/services/cemeteries/search/search.php
and enter the surname of Mallows without the "e" and enter the dates of 01/01/1908 - 01/01/1910 and search all Cemeteries and search Burials You'll see a death entry Charles father of your Edward if you click on the surname once the search has been done you see details of his plot number - now if you repeat the search for the surname of Mallowes with the "e" and alter the dates to search between 1897 and 1902. You'll see details of Edwards mother and a younger sister for Edward.
Take note of each plot number I think you'll find there all the same.
Wendy
-
Wendy,
Thank you for the copy of Edward and Jane's Marriage Certificate.
My copy was so badly water damaged that it was impossible to see parents names.
So if possible can you please find when the Mallowes family immigrated, was it to Australia first or was it New Zealand. If it was New Zealand that explaines why I could never find immigration details for Australia.
Also thank you for the site Paperspast, I had a quick look yesterday, so I will now go back and have a really good look.
Its funny everyone has told me to start looking for information on my ancestors with family, but it seems that I was giving the wrong information about Edward taking the 2 oldest children to New Zealand, when they all went to New Zealand.
So thanks again
Midsummer
-
Hi midsummer
Unless I've read it wrong the link in my post 3 messages back shows you that the family consisting of
Charles = Edwards dad
Julia = Edwards mum
and siblings of Edward went to NZ in 1872 aboard the Jessie Readman
this link shows the ship they travelled on in the right time frame but their names are not listed as they were just "navvies to work on the railways" you may get more info from the place where this website got its info.
heres the link
http://www.yesteryears.co.nz/shipping/passlists/jessiereadman.html
and if you scroll down through the page till you get to this bit of text
London (22 Sep 1872) to Wellington (14 Dec 1872)
then you can scroll to the bottom to see what I mean abt them not being shown in name form on the web.

Hate to be a pest, but any chance of findind information on when Jane Ellen Mallowes and children (and how many children) came back to Australia.
Thanks again
Midsummer
-
Wendy
Have you had a chance to find for me please, when Jane and children arrived back in Australia and how many children came back with her.
Midsummer
-
HI
Sorry for not replying sooner, too many things on at once. to answer your question - No I never was able to find anything not even a date as to when Jane went back.
Wendy
-
Wendy
Thank you for your reply, but I think if you dont mind I will close off with the Mallowes family and if at a later date I require more information can I start up another forum on this family. So thank you everyone for all of your help with the Mallowes family.
Midsummer
-
Wendy
I have found another Mallowes but I am not sure if this person is part of my lot, so can you see if you can find anything more on this one.
Dorothy May Mary Campbell Mallowes born 1894 to Jane Ellen and Edward Mallowes
Thanks Midsummer
-
Wendy
Sorry should have asked you in previous message.
Is there any chance that you can find for me when Edward left New Zealand and arrived in Australia.
And then when Jane Ellen, Edward and children all returned to New Zealand.
Thanks

Hi I'm new here and found this an interesting thread.
Did anyone reply with the interpretation of the handwriting? Here's mine...
"... Justice of the Peace duly appointed to give consent in cases of minority for the Bridegroom & Robert Mobley? the father of the bride".
My Mallows are from Norfolk.
Philip
-
Phillip
Thank you for you reply, I am not sure if the MALLOWES that I am after do come from Norfolk or not. At the present time Edward Mallowes my grandfather was born in London, parents could be from Norfolk. I have been told yes they do and then another site has told me no, so I am up a tree without a paddle.
So maybe you can sort this out for me.
Thanks
Midsummer

Have you tried the 1901 census? http://www.1901censusonline.com/
(Assuming he was alive in 1901).
The free information is helpful - gives birthplace, census location, age and occupation. Any more than that and they charge a fee.
Philip

Philip
Thank you for your reply.
Edward and his family had all immigrated to New Zealand around 1872/73, by what Wendy had told me in an earlier email.
So thank you again.
