Title: NAIRN Fam. History - Ayr?
Post by: Tiffaney on Friday 18 September 09 05:01 BST (UK)

I have a Cuthbert NAIRN, farmer, born 1794 who married Margaret HIGHET.
Believe they were both buried in the Churchyard of Dunlop c1858 or at least one of them was around that time/

Would anyone know more about Cuthbert's family please.?

Thank you,
Tiffaney

Hello Tiffaney,

I cannot find a marriage of a Cuthbert Nairn, and Margaret Highet, anywhere on the Scottish, records.

There is however two possible births to couples with those names.

Jean Nairn, born 14/April/1782. Stewarton, Ayr.
Parents, Cuthbert Nairn, and Margaret Highet.

Marrion Nairn, born 06/March/1774. Stewarton, Ayr.
Parents, Cuthbert Nairn, and Margaret Highgate.

This is most likely the same couple.

Alas your date of birth for Cuthbert Nairn, is 1794.

Are you sure your birth year for your Cuthbert, is correct, and how did you arrive at his birth date.

By 1851. the oldest Cuthbert Nairn, in Ayrshire, is 48 years old, and married to a Elizabeth, and living in Mauchline, Ayr.

Regards,
Jonn.

Hello Jonn,  thank you so much for your help re NAIRNS.
I was given the above details by a NAIRN who is on my forum
http://ancestralsearch.proboards.com/index.cgi...perhaps I should check the date I have copied is correct. as the children appear to be right so can't be.
Will get back to you once I recheck.

Much appreciated,
Tiff

Jonn, thanks once again for your help.

The date I had for Cuthbert NAIRN being 1794, is correct.

On Worlds Connect - Rustor - Janet kindly gave me, there are several more Cuthbert NAIRNS including my one  born 1794, so children you gave me may still be connected but further back.

Thanks,
Tiff

Cuthbert Nairn and Margaret Highet had a son called William, who married Margaret Gemmel, and their son, George, married Margaret Wyllie, and they, with at least three of their children immigrated to New Zealand, some time between 1853 and 1857. Six more were born in New Zealand.Their 6th child, James Wyllie Nairn married Jane Hartfield Smith, my great grandmother's sister.

There are now Nairns all over New Zealand.

BDM registration commenced in 1840.  Google NEW ZEALAND+BDM, then click on Historical Records.  It is a goldmine.

George Nairn and his brother John went to Australia in 1854. Then they moved on to New Zealand. George's wife and five children came out on the Lord Burleigh in 1856. She had James Wyllie/Wylie Nairn exactly nine months later. I have lovely photograph of him in his later years. I have a tree in my files, but it is incomplete. Also have a photo of George and Margaret's wedding. I am descended from James Wyllie Nairn's brother John Nairn. As you say, there are Nairns all over New Zealand now.
