I have got back to James Midgley born 1764, and this is where my problem arises, there are 2 possible candidates for his father, either Joseph born in 1732 or another Joseph born in 1733. If anyone could help, I would be grateful.

Hi,
Do you know which church they went to?
If you do I will try to find his christening in the archives.

Hi scamp1234, I do not know the exact church. I have been on the IGI batch nu bers for Yorkshire and it just lists Keighley, and no church name - sorry. The trouble is I live in Sheffield so I do not know any church names for Keighley. It doesn't help either that there are lots n lots of Johns, Josephs and James.

What did he call his children? If one of the girls is named after a possible wife for one of the Josephs that may help. Have you checked to make sure both of your candidates survive childhood? Many a family tree is based on someone who died in childhood!

PS I see he is a child of Joseph and Grace so looking for their marriage might help. Occupation might be a vital clue here.

The James I am looking for is my GGGG grandad, I cannot help with the occupation as I do not know this - sorry

Hi poptin,
I think it will be St. Peter's the others are all in districts.
I might have an hour to spare on Monday so I will have a look for you.

The point I was trying to make is that if you find a marriage it may give an occupation for Joseph. You can then look to see if the same occupation is given on the baptism record. Unfortunately not all vicars noted that sort of information but it is worth a try and sometimes if they had a trade such as blacksmith or shoemaker the sons followed in their father's footsteps.
Where did James marry? Who were the witnesses?

I have just found that the Joseph that I am looking for married a Grace Edmundson in about 1763. As I live in Sheffield, I cannot get to any Archives in West Yorkshire to look his occupation up, apart from web sights to be paid for, is there any other way I can find out his occupation? Many thanks

Have you been into the Sheffield Archives office to see what they have? They may have some out of area records. Your nearest LDS family history centre will be able to order films of most parish records in for you. Look on www.familysearch.org What about joining the appropriate Family History group. They often have transcripts for sale and/or volunteers who will do look ups.
