Post by: lorna2 on Thursday 17 September 09 17:32 BST (UK)
hi

i am looking for possible information on south african adoption. i have a distant relative who was born south africa but both her parents were british. the only thing i can think of was she was adopted.

where would i go fom here. her name was grace. she was born in 1906. her parents on records were a arthur boundy who was born in derbyshire, england, in the year 1876. i believe he married a florence ingram.

both arthur and florence ended up in america and had a further children but i believe they biological. i not sure whether grace was adopted or whether she there own child.

thank you lorna

Hi Lorna  :)

Grace could have been a biological child. Arthur and Florence could have lived her then gone to
America. Children born at that time where registered as Union National - the colony was British
at the time.

How do you know Grace was born in South Africa?
Do you have her death certificate?

Cheers
Ouma

thank you ouma for responding to me.

i know grace was south african because i have managed to get hold of details concerning crossing the canadian border into america.

it states that she entered america 19 october 1912 aged 7 and that her birth country was south africa but does not state where. it also states that her race/nationaliaty is enflish.

apparntly she left from liverpool in the uk on the ship called magentic and arrived in quebec, canada.

i do not know if any of that info might help anyone think of anything.

once again thanks

Hi there - Grace and Florence left South Africa in 1908, followed a few months later by Arthur. I agree that she is probably their own child. It is unlikely, and certainly not easy, to get hold of adoption records in South Africa.
