From the Times Online today.
"The BBC’s guilt over axeing Arlene Phillips knows no bounds. After announcing that she is to judge a new show for amateurs, So You Think You Can Dance?, we gather that the choreographer has also been invited to take part in the genealogy series, Who Do You Think You Are? Phillips, 66, grew up in a strict Jewish home in Manchester. Both her parents died when she was still a teenager, depriving her of the opportunity to learn more about her heritage".
An eighth series has definitely been commissioned for 2010 apparently, I wonder if they will include the missing episodes of Konnie Huq and David Schwimmer? Also thought to be appearing is former Doctor Who star Freema Agyeman who has been seen with a film crew in Ghana.

Victoria Beckham, to prove she really is posh.
Jeffrey Archer, to prove he definitely isn't.
-
I was with someone back in July who comes from a business, rather than an entertainment, background and he had received an initial approach from the programme. When we met him he was waiting for them to contact him again to let him know if they had found enough of interest in his ancestors!

Victoria Beckham
Jeffrey Archer
... are the only two I've even vaguely heard of !
Maybe the more famous are too wary or dont want the public to see the skeletons in their cupboards !
-
I kind of wish they'd make a non-celebrity version of this, but unfortunately it just wouldn't be practical. It would be interesting to see, though. They should come on here and scour the boards until they find something they think is really interesting! Shouldn't take them too long...

I'd just like to see a few more with ancestors born and raised in England, like mine were. Nothing racist - I just want the programme to be about family trees, and not about paid holidays abroad for the rich and famous !
Surely some of our famous people had ordinary families ?
I was thinking about someone like Ricky Gervais (thought that may be his stage name), until I read his bio on Wiki.....
"Gervais, along with siblings Larry, Marsha and Bob, was born and raised in the suburb of Whitley in Reading, Berkshire. "
Sounds good so far.......
"Gervais's father, Jerry, a Franco-Ontarian, emigrated while on foreign duty during the Second World War from London, Ontario, Canada. Jerry met Gervais's mother, Eva, during a blackout, and they settled in Whitley."
Dohhh ! ;D

Victoria Beckham, to prove she really is posh.
She was born in Harlow, Essex. I don't think so ! :)
Although her dad was quite well off, and owned a Rolls Royce, but he was a self-made man.
-
I think you missed the joke, Nick. :P
-
No, I didn't.......... as they say "You can take the girl out of Harlow, but you can't take Harlow out of the girl" ;D
P.S. I lived there for a while myself.
-
Ricky Gervais had a fairly large part in an early Dalziel and Pascoe. He was the student who plagued Pascoe for many years.
Sorry can't remember his name as in the cast list, but it was not Ricky Gervais. He must have been using a stage name and has now reverted to his real name.
Sorry, not really relevant, but just thought I would mention it :-\

Just asked my mum & dad cos they like watching it - as non-genealogists lol, they like the 'stories'
Mum suggested Cliff Richard - lol which was no surprise :p
Dad said Pete Waterman - he wants to know if he - like us - has a railway history back in his family. Dads a railway fanatic like Pete and I have 3 out of the 4 'sides' of the family working on the railways for generations before either dad or I were around (lol I confess, I love the Old Steam trains too!)
I would just like to see someone from this area - theres enough Celebrities gone into acting and Sports from around my area (Oldham) I am sure they could find someone!
-
Victoria Beckham.
Please tell me you are fibbing. :o :o :o
I think I might have to be ill/out/abroad that night. Anything to avoid watching that!

I don't think there's much chance of seeing Cliff on WDYTYA..... there has always been speculation on his mother's ethnicity (some allege that her roots are in India), and he won't talk about it.
Mind you, if they did do Cliff and Jackie Collins, it would save a lot of research money - nearly 200 years in one generation ;D
-
As Alexander Armstrong seems to be on the Beeb quite a lot now, would he qualify for a real WDYTYA to follow his spoof version? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c65QRaR16io
I've always though there would be a lot of comedy mileage in having the Queen as a subject (so to speak) of a spoof version The Queen on a train to Windsor, wondering what kind of skeletons she might find, her surprise at finding statues of gt gt granny all round the world, that kind of thing. ;D

Did anyone see the mention in the September issue of Ancestors, that Michael Parkinson was approached?
He apparently told researchers that he thought his family history would be too boring.
The researchers did their stuff...and came back and and agreed with him!
Dave
;D :D

Yeah I read that in the Radio Times. :)

Funny you should mention Ricky Gervais.
I have just this morning discovered I am related to him..lol..
So an episode of WDYTYA with him would be of most interest.
But surprisingly..I don't really like his comedy....apart from Flanimals.
He comes across as little arrogant...or is it just me?.

Re Harlow
someone said of Jean Harlow
'the T is silent as in Harlow'
-
I can't stand Ricky Gervais!
-
Nor can I .......lol
-

Have to say off hand....can't really think of anyone!.....
There aren't really any stars anymore...most are off those awful reality or talent (less) shows.
Bill Bailey springs to mind.....Frankie Boyle.....
Most stars on tv now are Yanks.....
And please...less folks with Jewish backgrounds.....once you've heard about the Holocaust...a dozen times...it gets old.
Yes it was bad etc....but not eveyone is a Jew.
And why did they stop showing the American version?....
If I was after a BIG star....then Kylie Minogue.....she has Welsh ancestors...like myself....maybe related......hehehe.... ;) .
